NightOwl
Hi. Hope you can help: I'm looking for works of fiction either set in schools/colleges/uni etc., or concerning education in general. The Prime of Miss Jeam Brodie instantly springs to mind, so does anyone know of similar works? I've just finished reading 'Mister Teacher' by J Sheffield - not great but ideal as a light read and I'll probably read his other books. I've also worked my way through the Gervase Phinn books - any more ideas? Thanks!
frankie
One great novel that is set in a college comes to mind immediately: The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Very mysterious and and dark ambiance at times, absolutely amazing
Kate
Joanna Harris: Gentlemen and Players is set in a school - very good book

BookJumper
Elizabeth Garner, The Ingenious Edgar Jones is set in Oxford University. I haven't read it yet but it's sitting signed on my shelf and is meant to be quite good.

I read this earlier in the year - was a good book
Janet
I loved both Gentlemen and Players and The Ingenious Edgar Jones. I've yet to read it, but Goodbye Mr Chips by James Hilton is set in a school. The Martin Clunes film version of this is great.
chesilbeach
Notes On A Scandal by Zoe Heller.
NightOwl
Thanks for the suggestions - some good reads there! I did read 'Gentlmen and Players' a couple of years ago but it'll be worth going back for another look. I don't know what fascinates me about school settings: always seem to enjoy them, though. Beccles
What about the Grange Hill books? or some Enid Blyton books
Talisman
I know it's a bit different, and not what most people would think of as a school, but what about a book I read last year - Seminary Boy by John Cornwell. It is about his years spent at a junior seminary as a precursor for training towards the Preisthood, and really funny in places.
SueK
I've yet to read it, but Goodbye Mr Chips by James Hilton is set in a school. The Martin Clunes film version of this is great. I second that about Goodbye Mr Chips - it is a wonderful story. To a lesser extent, part of Nicholas Nickleby is set in Dotheboys Hall with the wonderfully named Wackford Squeers as the teacher:D
