BookJumper
Haven't read them myself, but a quick search on Amazon returned these as the most popular one-volume biographies of lots of different inventors: The Scientists: A History of Science Told Through the Lives of Its Greatest Inventors by John R. Gribbin and The Lives, Loves and Deaths of Splendidly Unreasonable Inventors by Jeremy Coller and Christine Chamberlain. Hope that helps.
