Poems by Lord Byron & his memoirs

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

This is my first post so before anything else, Hello :eek2:

I wasn't sure which forum to post this particular question in so I thought I couldn't go far wrong if I posted it in here.

Basically I have a very small book, in fact it only stands about 2 and a half inches tall. It is Poems by The Right Honourable Lord Byron with his Memoirs (well pretty much as the subject header says).

My question is, does anybody have any information or know anything about this book? I have tried a quick search online but that has proved unsuccessful.

I appreciate any help.

Kind Regards

Craig

Hi Craig - welcome to the Book Club Forum. :eek2:

I've moved this post into the 'Looking for a book' forum because this is where our members who like sleuthing will see it. ;)

I take it the book has no ISBN number? Does it have any other identification on it, such as publisher, date of publication, etc?

Could you take a photograph of it?

Hello Janet,

Thank you for moving my post to the appropriate forum :eek2:

Unfortunately it doesn't have an ISBN Number, it does have a publisher name and that is Jones & Company No.3 Warwick Square, London 1825

There is an inscription on the first page of the book, I think it is hand written so I can't quite make it out perfectly, that says "Moxica H Paposts" Or something very similar " Book City of Toronto, Jan the 3 1837" this part is clearer and I think that is exactly what it says.

I can take a picture of the book but I am unable to upload it until later this evening but I will do that no problem.

There is one other thing in the book that may help, it says the printer are:

Andrew & John M. Duncan

Glasgow

Printers to the University.

I will get some pictures up later but I hope in the meantime I have provided enough information above.

many thanks

Craig.

I think you might need to take it into a specialist (or contact one by phone) for a valuation.

I used to work from home cataloguing books for a large second-hand book store and we used to work in conjunction with Amazon.

I've found the book to which you refer, but unfortunately there are no copies available on Amazon - and therefore no prices.

The link to the relevant page, if you're interested, is here. The 1825 is listed (as currently unavailable) along with various other editions, but as I said, unfortunately no prices.

Hello again Janet,

Wow, thank you for your speedy response, it is very much appreciated. I did try Amazon but not being very familiar with its workings I didn't have much success.

I will take a look at the link you provided out of interest. If it is of any interest to you or the forum I will let you know the outcome of the specialist valuation and opinions.

Many thanks again, oh and I forgot to thank you for the welcome in your previous post.

Craig

This book sounds amazing. How wonderful, a very old book of Byron's poems. Is it in good condition Charlieboy? I hope you treasure it forever:D

Talking of lovely editions, I fell upon an old, small copy of Lark Rise to Candleford in very good condition for ..... wait for it ...... 75p in a local Oxfam shop. It is a prize possession.

Hello Sue

Well the book is very intriguing, a glimpse into the mind of Lord Byron, it's quite fascinating. Not just that it is a curiously sized book at just 2 and a half inches tall. The font on the pages could be difficult to read if a persons sight isn't great but other than that an all round fascinating book. Considering the book is only 16 years off being 200 years old it is in very good condition, all pages and cover in tact, it has the expexted discolouration on the pages but other than that, no tears or damage. It has been in a clear plastic bag in my grandmothers house for at least 50 years untouched so I have been very lucky!

75p :eek2:, it's amazing what you can find in charity shops and boot sales. People often turn their noses up at shopping in such places but they can be quite a goldmine if you are looking for little hidden treasures to eventually sell on or even keep as prize possessions ;)

That is just a lovely story Charlieboy. I wish I had found similar in my grandmother's house when she was alive, cobwebs were all that were in her attic.;)

I don't know whereabout you reside but if you have some good antiquarian bookshops in your area then they might be able to give you a valuation.

Yes, I swear by some charity shops, I have picked up some lovely books that I would haven't have found anywhere else.

yes the cobwebs were also present in my grandmothers house. The other set of books I also found there was a full set of Charles Dickens stories in very good condition. These aren't as rare as the Lord Byron book so I sent them packing to an avid collector where they will be appreciated much more.

I also found an incredibly large edition of a bible, it's certainly the biggest book I have ever seen. This is what I love about books, it's not just the content but the appearance, it all adds to excitement.
