Easy chew-less recipes: help?

Recommended Posts

As extensively ranted about in the dedicated "Ouch" thread, I've got me a bit of a dislocated jaw. No one's able to have a prod at it until tomorrow, meanwhile I starve as I'm not really able to chew anything properly. Any suggestions for easy/cheapish concoctions of the liquid variety that will keep me alive for a tiny bit longer? Appreciated, thanks you in advance...

Mashed potato, made soft and light with grated cheese stirred in.

Maybe add a little fish in sauce on the side.

Mashed potato with mushy peas and gravy all stirred up to goo (Yum I hear you say :))

Soup? Chicken soup with bread and butter broken up and stirred in to soak up all the soup and go really soft.

Complan or build up drinks? Probably relatively expensive though - you can get them from the chemist.

Cauliflower cheese mushed up with a fork?

minced beef with onions and gravy/ or a tomato based sauce? If the onion is chopped fine enough and cooked long enough maybe you wouldn't need to chew.

Banana smoothie/milkshake - (banana whizzed up in a blender with milk/yoghurt?)

I used to be a terrible sufferer of mouth ulcers and used to live on some of these 'recipes' for weeks at a time.

I know it sounds really strange, but anytime I've had a sore throat or been unable to eat solids, I go for 2 things:

1) vanilla ice cream melted a bit by pouring warm caramel syrup over it.

2) (and this is the strange one): I really like banana baby food.. the plum is good, too. It sounds strange to be an adult eating baby food, but I swear some of those are really good!

That made me laugh.

At first I thought, "I wonder what is so strange?" Then I read the first point and thought "that sounds good, but not overly strange", then the baby food came in. Haha. It probably does taste pretty good though. Babies are humans after all. It's not like it is pet food or anything.

On the baby food front, I only recommend the puddingy foods - the savoury ones are all completely rank - I make my own for Xander.

Two of my favourite soups which are easy to make and completely smooth:

Roasted tomato and red pepper soup

(serves 3-4)

1 carton of cherry tomatoes

2 red peppers

1 large onion

2 cloves garlic

olive oil

stock cube

water

basil, oregano, salt and black pepper

- Cut the cherry tomatoes and peppers in half, quarter the onion and place all with the cloves of garlic (left whole) on a large baking tray. Brush on a little olive oil and whack in the oven at 180C for 30 mins.

- Put the whole lot in the blender and whizz till smooth.

- Put it all into a large pan and add the same amount again of stock (chicken stock works well, but vegetable stock can be used).

- Add herbs and seasoning, and simmer for about 10-15 mins.

- Serve.

* Is also lovely with some sour cream or plain fromage frais dolloped in the middle for a little bit of luxury.

* If you leave out the stock bit, you can use this as a lovely pasta sauce (or base for chilli!) and add chunky mushroom, courgette, more peppers and onions.

Sweet potato and butternut squash soup

(serves 4-6)

1 small butternut squash (peeled, de-seeded and diced)

2 medium sweet potatoes (peeled and diced)

1 medium onion (peeled and diced)

1 clove garlic (peeled and crushed)

Oil

Water

Stock cube

Season All, salt and black pepper

- Sautee the onion and garlic in a little olive oil.

- Put all the veg along with the stock (chicken or vegetable) and spice.

- Simmer till squash and sweet potatoes are tender.

- Blend with a hand blender (or put in a blender) till smooth

- Serve with salt and black pepper to taste.

* This makes quite a thick soup, so you can add however much water you need to make the desired consistency, hence the large serving amounts)

* Again, this is lovely with some sour cream or plain fromage fraise dolloped in it.

I make both these recipes very regularly (especially the first one as it's so very versatile!).

Ooh, another one is corned beef hash. Basically you mash potatoes and corned beef together and whack it under the grill till it's golden, but I use a mixture of different root vegetables (such as potatoes, swede, sweet potato, parsnip and carrot) to give a variety of lovely flavours to it. It's a whole proper meal and you can make it lovely and smooth (I usually leave the meat a tiny bit chunky, but when I'm feeling under the weather, I like it all smooth with lashings of butter through it!). Of course, if you're vegetarian, it's useless, although I suppose you could do it without the corned beef, making it vegetable hash! LOL!

Other lovely non-chew foods:

- scrambled eggs

- porridge

- beans

- baked potato with cheese (all whipped up smooth and without eating the skin)

- yoghurt

- icecream*

- chocolate or lemon mousse*

- cheesecake (without eating the base)*

* Hey, if you can't indulge yourself when you're not 100%, when can you?!

Wow, those soup recipes sound absolutely fantastic Kell, I'm not waiting for a dislocated jaw to try those!

Bookjumper I've just read your other thread and hope you get it sorted soon, you poor thing, it sounds awful. I've had a clicky jaw at times which is painful enough but that sounds gruesome

Mine started as nothing but a clicky jaw about ten years ago, I remember even performing my loose-jointedness (ankles, wrists, and of course the infamous jaw) for the horrified benefit of my friends when I was littler - however (this is what the nice doctor told me yesterday) as you grow older joints become stiffer and there is a chance that joints which have always clicked but never really hurt will then become a problem. I hope you're luckier than I am and this never happens to you, it is indeed gruesome !

All the recipiedom is going to come in more useful than I thought my friends; I don't get to see the specialist until April 6th *goes off to update the relevant thread with details and rantage* so once again, thanks all :D (<--- can't do that in real life but the sentiment's there).

Oh no! I've had a clicky jaw for about 10 years. I can just see this happening to me now...

Thank you.

Incidentally, a nice variation on the tomato and pepper one is to add chickpeas and diced chorizo - delicious! You can also make it a minestrone by adding mini pasta shells and bacon. And you can add whatever herbs and spices you fancy to give it extra zing - it's a very versatile base. I'll admit I use it for HEAPS of things. :D
