Let's have more short stories

Recommended Posts

Ray Bradbury has written a lot of short stories over the years. I've only read a few, and they've been very good. Stephen King also has some short story collections out. They're all horror stories, if you don't mind reading those.

I agree with the Stephen King mention; 'Nightmares and Dreamscapes' has some great ones. I don't really know of many other collections.

I've allways been a fan of short stories, but it seems to be a dying art, can any one recommend any new authors specialising in this genre.

It depends on what you mean by new. For modern short stories, you could try the ones written by the late Raymond Carver.

My mate keeps pestering me to read some Raymond Carver short stories. Would any of you recommend his work?

Hmm. Well yes they are worth reading. They are mo9re old school short stories, about the journey rather than the destination if you know what I mean. So I kind of enjoyed them, but I wouldn't go out of my way to hunt for more. I mean, I can see their merit, and they are enjoyable to read, but perhaps just not my thing. So yes I would, with a disclaimer lol.

I had an English teacher who loved Raymond Carver, so I think it would be safe to try him out. Some other good ones are:

Haruki Murakami

Joyce Carol Oates

John Connolly

Neil Gaiman

Rick Moody

David Foster Wallace

I still maintain, though, that no one beats Hemingway at a good short story!
