Just started reading my first Robert Rankin book 'The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse' enjoying it so far and it's given me the taste for more.

Which title would you recommend for my next 'Rankin read'?

Is there a series or are they all one offs?

I felt the same after getting the same book. Although I haven't finished reading it yet. I can imagine his style of writing to be quite addictive. :irked:

I like the look of 'a dog called demolition' - probably based on the true story of American serial killer 'the son of sam' who claimed he was commanded to kill by the neighbours dog who was said to be possessed by a demon :D

Off Amazon:

DANNY: PORTRAIT OF A SURREAL KILLER

Danny's not sad and lonely any more because Danny's got 'the voices'. Well, one voice. It's the voice of his dog, Demolition. And the dog's told him things. Like how to adjust the bar-code reader in the shop where Danny works so that he can read the lines on people's palms and see what they're thinking. And which small ads in the comic books to send off to so Danny can become irresistible to women, bend others to his will, gain vital inches and fear no man living.

I nearly died laughing at that. That is fan-bloody-tastic. :D:irked:

Yeah that put a big grin on my face too:lol: Another title is Sex Drugs and Sausage Rolls:mrgreen: He sounds like my kind of writer.

I read an interview with him in which he said he doesn't sell a huge amount of books, so let's help him out and all buy his books :D

I will when I have money! I want about 5 books I've looked up by him, and I already bought Hollow Chocolate Bunnies which was pure genius.

Robert Rankin is responsible for my love of reading, I never touched a book willingly until I read Garden of Unearthly Delights, it was so completely and utterly off the wall it had me hooked, then there was no going back! I think I've read nearly all of them apart from the more recent ones (really should get back into them). My favourite is Waiting for Godalming, just the blurb on the back has me giggling!! I try and explain his books to people, I just get strange looks haha!! Sex, Drugs and Sausage Rolls is another of my favourites too! Oh there are so many to choose from though!

I'd say the first 3 of the Brentford Trilogy (now up to 9 books)
The Antipope
The Brentford Triangle
East of Ealing
You have to meet Pooley, O'Malley, Neville the Part-time barman, Archroy and all the Brentfod residents.

I've only read The Book of Ultimate Truths but I really enjoyed it, quite surprisingly, even! :)

What I love about this thread is that almost everyone has been recommending a different book by Rankin to the original poster, and others have only seconded suggestions, I don't think there were any posts saying 'no, that one wasn't such a good book'. So I think one could start with any one of his books and if they like his style, they are up for a laugh and can carry on just reading the rest, too! :)

I've only read one of Rankin's books that I liked, but I can't quite remember the title. It was a German translation too. I keep thinking it's something with bunnies, but it's not Hollow chocolate bunnies of the apocalypse.

The rest is just way too absurd for me. Usually I like funny and crazy books, but I guess it must be something about his style that I just don't get.

My boyfriend loves them though, which is why we have about all of the discontinued German translations lying around.
