Charm
Glad to see your enjoying Kathy Reichs Frankie, I haven't been let down by her books yet Edit: You do realise though, if you keep adding more than you read, your TBR pile will be bursting out of your apartment!!! frankie
Glad to see your enjoying Kathy Reichs Frankie, I haven't been let down by her books yet Edit: You do realise though, if you keep adding more than you read, your TBR pile will be bursting out of your apartment!!! Yes... ... But I'm done with my adding now, from here on out it's just reading, reading, reading! Which brings me to my point: Just finished Grave Secrets by Kathy Reichs. This is so far my least favorite from Brennan books, I just couldn't really get into the story. Which is really surprising, because Reichs has the ability to make things that seem dull to me very interesting. For example I was a bit bored already in advance when I found out that Deadly Decisions involved motorbikes and Fatal Voyage was about a plain crash. And yet I really enjoyed these books. Well, maybe the next one turns out to be better. I'm off to bed with Bare Bones Post 8th January 2009, 12:47: Since last post I've finished - Sophie Kinsella: Remember me? (Good for giggles, much appreciated!) - Kathy Reichs: Fatal Voyage (Turned out to be a real exciting read. There was a twist towards the end of it which I at first disliked a lot but then it made sense and really turned the story aroung. Excellent!) - Helen Keller: Story of My Life (Boring! Had such high expectations) Post 8th January 2009, 21:44 Just finished Baby Jane by Sofi Oksanen. I was surprised at how quick a read it was. I'd give it 8/10. frankie
OH OH OH ! I know!! Read 'The Surgeon' by Tess Gerritsen. I can nearly GUARANTEE you'll love it! I did think about reading it, but I'm fearing that I've read too many Kathy Reichs's books in a row to read any more thrillers (although I do like them). I'm a bit irritated at the fact that Tempe Brennan always gets herself in trouble, why can't she just solve a case without being in danger herself for once . I'm reading Devil Bones and am just waiting for the same to happen If you're fed up with thrillers then don't read 'The Surgeon' just yet as I dont want your frame of mind to spoil it for you (although it is a bit different to Tempe ), but do read it the next time you're going for a thiller!! frankie
Frankie, did you like Metamorphosis? I have never read Kafka- what was it like? I've never read Kafka either before now. I decided to read Metamorphosis because it's on Rory's books list (Rory from Gilmore Girls) and because it was quite short, around 90 pages so picking it up wasn't intimidating. I knew beforehand that it's not a straighforward story but there are metaphors and what not literary thingies. It was an okay read but I didn't get that much out of it, and didn't feel like going too deep into it. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't difficult to read it, but I guess there should have been more to the story than I managed to get out of it. Nellie
I've never tried to read it, but I sense it's the sort of book you need to read whilst reading "A Handy Guide To Kafka" alongside it!
frankie
I've never tried to read it, but I sense it's the sort of book you need to read whilst reading "A Handy Guide To Kafka" alongside it! Not a bad suggestion. After I had read it I kept thinking that I need to google for other people's comments on the book and see if there are people who can decipher Kafka. Didn't put me off reading more Kafka though, I still want to read The Trial someday.
frankie
Finished reading The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Now this is a classic but I really didn't know much about it beforehand so it was a fresh read. And surprisingly short. A bit too short, me thinks. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed it, even more than I thought I would. It was creepy! Feel like reading more horror stories. And classics. Hmmm, horror classics... Kylie
I read Metamorphosis a couple of years ago, not knowing what to expect. Needless to say, I was surprised from the first sentence. I've also read The Trial, which is even weirder, but a pretty good story. It was made into quite a good movie too. I have The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde on my TBR pile and am looking forward to reading it very soon.

To me the surprising element was that he still thought he could manage to get to work and function as usual, no matter how hard it seemed physically to do it. The Trial is even weirder?? Oh shucks. Well I'm going to read it anyway. Very determined to do so.
frankie
I started reading The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald last night and I almost made it to then end when I drifted to sleep. Finished it just now. I think that this book was on my friend's literature course and I wondered why it wasn't in ours. Anyway, I liked it eventhough I couldn't really relate to any of the characters or even like them. To me they all seemed selfish, stubborn and miserable. Exept for Nick Carraway, but he was only along for the ride. I'm having problems deciding what to read next. On one hand I'd like to read something off the 1001 Books - and Rory's Books -lists, and on the other hand I feel like reading something light and something that I've been wanting to read for a long time. Don't know what that would be, though. Hmph!
frankie
Finally was able to finish William Golding's Lord of the Flies. I've tried reading this book a couple of times before and never managed further than 30 pages or so. This time I was determined to finish it and I did. For the first half of the book I found it really boring, then it started to pick up the pace. Then it became really distressing. Quite awful. I'm not saying that the book was badly written, it's more like the subject matter was so disturbing that it kind of made me hate the book. frankie
Finished The Trial by Franz Kafka. What a weird, and exhausting read. I liked the style of the writing, but I hated the endless paragraphs that seemed to drag on forever. I can wholeheartedly say that I'm done with Kafka.
