libri vermis
Mark Helprin John Crowley John Irving I read Cormac McCarthy's The Road and I wasn't that impressed. I much prefer Jose Saramago, whose style is similar, but superior.
BigWords
Nicholson Baker. Michael Chabon. Max Allan Collins. Peter David. (or is he Canadian?) Stephen King. J. Michael Straczynski. This ir really hard to pin down some of my favorites as there are so many good writers working at the moment. And this thread does say authors, so I'm including Straczynski on the strength of his non-fic book about writing. And his run on the Spider-Man monthly. Raskolnikov
Don't know much about contemporary US authors but I have read 3 books from Cormac McCarthy and I still wonder why he didn't get the Literature Nobel Price yet.
MorningGlory
Nobody has mentioned E A Prolux yet. I've found all her books to be wonderful reads. And reading this thread reminds me I must get round to re-reading Paul Auster's Timbuktu and start on some of Jhumpa Lahiri's novels!
