Angury
I would be interested to hear people's thoughts on booktubers. Are you aware of the group and do you follow any booktubers on youtube? For the uninitiated, booktubers are people who upload videos on Youtube about books they read, authors they are interested in, books they plan to buy/have bought as well as sharing their thoughts on upcoming books, book shops in their area, their bookshelves, and really anything bookish! There are specific types of videos that booktubers post including readathons, tours of their bookshelves, book-shopping/touring bookshops, TBR videos and interviews with authors. There are a wide range of booktubers out there from all over the world covering a wide range of genres. I think it's a lovely way of sharing your love of books being part of a community through such a visual and aesthetic experience. The booktubers that I currently follow include: Emma Angelinehttps://www.youtube.com/c/SarcasticFish A British booktuber, she covers a lot of books from her previous Comparative Literature degree and I've come across a lot of interesting books from her videos. Christy Anne Joneshttps://www.youtube.com/c/aileaux Based in Australia, she reads a variety of genres and also works in the book world. She is also interested in writing and her videos have a lovely aesthetic. A Frolic through Fictionhttps://www.youtube.com/c/AFrolicThroughFiction Another British booktuber, she tends to read a lot of Fantasy. Ruby Grangerhttps://www.youtube.com/c/RubyGranger8 Perhaps more of a studytuber, she is currently studying English Literature at University and covers books she is reading and a lot of videos of book-shopping/aesthetics. She is also interested in creative writing. Read a Day Clubhttps://www.youtube.com/c/ReadADayClub I've only recently subscribed to this channel, but seems to cover a lot of classics and more in-depth review of the literature. Saumya's Bookstationhttps://www.youtube.com/c/SaumyasBookstation Another recent addition to my list. She is a booktuber based in India and offers more non-Western ideas of books to look into and consider. Emmiehttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMFSTAyvpl_yBXmq6JPfhBQ Another ?American booktuber studying English Lit and Classical Studies. Book Browsing Bloghttps://www.youtube.com/c/bookbrowsingblog/videos British booktuber covering mostly Fantasy & YA books. https://www.youtube.com/user/ReadingBukowski British booktuber and ? English Lit Graduate, later completing a MA in 18th & 19th Century Literature. Currently works in book publishing and a lot of her videos are based on book-shops in London and the classics. Jack Edwards/Jack in the Bookshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thejackexperience/abouthttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0dx1Fa4nt3FRWWG5IcdOEQ British English Lit grad and previous studytuber. Lots of 'fun' videos offering reviews on popular books/books that celebs recommend. Quite relaxed and funny videos. Sabine's Book Nookhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKQlDbmwTKLHT88dWfxkGaw Another new booktuber I have just come across. Looking forward to hearing everyones views and potential recommendations! Hux
Those people all seem very... jolly. Probably not for me. 'Better Than Food' is occasionally worth a watch. And G.C McKay.
Madeleine
I follow the blog of someone who used to be in an internet book group that I was in, but that's about it.
KEV67
I used to watch quite a few nice, young ladies on YouTube talk about books. I don't watch so many now. Sometimes they discontinue their channels. Sometimes they move into topics I am not so interested in. My favourite was Katie from Books and Things, who discusses Victorian literature a lot. She reads quick, she thinks quick, she speaks quick. I occasionally watch Becky M for science fiction book reviews. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNBgyHiLdu0lVN9Hr-xTLLw (Books and Things) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwpMfAT2jtdZ2VFH56nE6bg (Becky M) I have come across Ellie Dashwood recently. I am not sure she really counts as a BookTuber. She discusses subjects related to Jane Austen. She must be some sort of educator because she is so professional. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0AnXj-FmgHRtDcFMd_kFyQ (Ellie Dashwood) Another young lady whose content is amazing is Nerd Cookies. I don't think she really qualifies as a BookTuber, either because she discusses topics relating to LotR, Dune. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXYIDTytNEO3NgDVwdOKjWw There are quite a few YouTubers who interesting explore topics raised in Lord of the Rings. Hayley
I was vaguely aware of booktubers from Twitter, but I only actually watched a video when Athena set up her channel Gaia Athena - YouTube . I haven't used youtube much at all recently though, so I have a lot to catch up on!
Brian.
I always have reservations with opinions on YouTube as there is far too much undeclared paid promotion going on. Couple that with clickbait titles and purposefully controversial videos to gain more views and it gets harder and harder to know what is genuine and what is not. It's especially bad when it comes to tech channels but the problem is spreading to all areas of the site.
KEV67
I generally found the BookTubers I followed pretty straightforward. Quite a few of them were undergraduates. Some of them work in publishing. I wondered if a big reason for starting their channels was to get into publishing, because I expect that is a difficult industry to get into. Some of them did review books they were sent. I suppose it is difficult to be brutally honest about a book when you have had contact with the author, but if they declare that they were sent the book, you can take that into account. I rarely read a book because I see it reviewed on YouTube.
