Hmmm... just realised that one's posts in a topic don't appear to be editable. So not quite sure how I'll add items to my reading list, other than by adding replies, one reply per book read. Not quite the effect I had in mind. Wonder how other people create an ongoing reading list? So much to learn!

Brian - many thanks for clarifying! Is it OK to post my reading lists from previous years in this forum, too? I’m a refugee from BookGroupOnline, which will be closing down later this year, alas, and I’ve several years of my lists there which I’d love to keep, for sharing and for reference.

Hi Hayley! Two of the very first SF books I ever read were Bradbury’s “R Is For Rocket” and “S Is For Space”, which I discovered aged 9, around 1966, in my local library (or my alternate home, as I spent so much time there in my youth!). I always recalled them fondly, so when I learned PS Publishing were publishing a beautiful hb omnibus edition of the two books, I knew what hints to drop in my wife’s direction, as last Christmas approached. Happily, memory has not played tricks, and the stories are as good as I remember - better, now I’m of an age to fully appreciate their nuance. My all-time favourite Bradbury novel, not that he wrote many, is “Something Wicked This Way Comes”, a fantasy beautifully unlike any other I’ve read before or since; I strongly suspect The League Of Gentlemen had it firmly in mind when they introduced us to Papa Lazarou’s Pandemonium Carnival.

Hayley - I found the Le Fanu slightly hard going initially: the often archaic language, and the incredibly long sentences with their dense thickets of subordinate clauses. However, the novella “The Room In The Dragon Volant” completely won me over, and proved a gloriously enjoyable “scam” caper, whilst the closing “Carmilla” revealed where Bram Stoker - as he freely admitted - obtained much of his inspiration for “Dracula”. A very, very highly recommended collection.

Of course, go for it.

That's good to hear because it's the book I particularly wanted to read! I have to admit I don't think I've heard of "S is for Space" or "R is for Rocket" before but I looked them up after seeing them on your list and they sound amazing!

I don't mind a book that's hard going initially, as long as it has features that make it worth the extra effort!
