xRobbox
Currently seven books, with a further seven in the post and going to do some window-shopping at the local charity shop in the coming weeks. Many reference books around the house but nothing I can say is official my own except for what's counted in the bedroom.
Booknutt
I wish you joy of and collecting your favourites, Robbo Charity shops and cut-price bookshops are a fantastic source of traditional (i.e. paperback or hardback) books at give-away prices these days. Many charity shop ones are actually new - surplus stock from retailers - or in mint condition, as their previous owners never actually read them It's always worth a visit for a bit of a book trawl when you're about town. wordsgood
I'm just going to add to Booknutt's response a bit. I don't know if they have similar stores in the UK or not, but we have what are called "Dollar Stores" in Canada. Everything in them is dirt cheap and some have now started stocking retail surplus books too. If you have anything similar, maybe you could find some there? Kylie
We have those shops, Wordsgood, except ours tend to specialise in books and sell nothing else. There was one great one in my hometown - I went in for a visit today and it is no longer there. I knew that this particular one was probably a temporary store, but it was still a rude shock to see it go.

We have some that are not part of the larger chain and those tend to go by the way of the Dodo rather quickly. Mostly I think because they just can't keep up with the big chain's purchasing power. Was thinking about the 2nd hand bookstores in my city. Used to have a few great ones but now most of them don't last long because they tend not to offer competive prices. I have a problem with paying nearly full retail for 2nd hand books unless they are some type of collector's edition or very hard to get volumes. Library sales are much better for those as you can get a huge load for pennies on the dollar.
Kreader
I don't really collect as I hate dusting shelves and I don't have much storage space in my flat. I'm at a loss why I seem to have accumulated over 60 books! it must be because I put up a few more shelves. I do make use of my local library frequently . I tend to read then get rid of the book via charity shop or bookswapping. I'm a minimalist when it comes to keeping books. I'm a reader not a collector. allard
Oh Michelle, that a sad statement to make, you seem almost proud of it to.! Oh, I know there's good/bad books, but never keeping books once their read.? I myself have only got rid of two books in my life, because they were dire absolutely god awful crapola, and they were "Perfume The STORY of a Murder. : http://http://www.bookcourt.org/wp-content/uploads/2006/06/perfume.jpg Which my so called betters (artsy fartsy critics) thought the sun shone out it's arse.! And this load of merde The Da Vinci Code. :http://www.teenbar.net/showthread.php?1350-teen-potter http://http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y14/steelclaw32/354px-DaVinciCode_US.png I've just off the top of my head got 5to8 hundred odd books, (some, VERY, odd ones indeed! ) which I gathered through my life, my late wife, Helen, once said to me, "books, and you had more then one thing in common, trees had 'rings' in them and tell a story, your books are your rings." good analogy that, and she was right. i only have 2 hundred and I can't even say for sure i know them. I've read them yes but you know sometimes you read something in a particular mood and it evaporates pretty fast. i think it all depends on how related is the book to your real life
Pixie
It's probably difficult to see, but if you look at the background of my profile picture, you can see the bookshelf, which is full of neatly alphabetized books. That is one of five bookshelves that I have. All of them have double rows of books. I would say I probably own close to 1000 books, and not all of them fit on my bookshelves. That is one of five bookshelves that I have. All of them have double rows of books. I would say I probably own close to 1000 books, and not all of them fit on my bookshelves. Sniffles, little tear of mourning here. You just made me jealous. I used to keep all of my books sorted first by genre, then alphabetically by author and series, and woe betide anyone who dared to misplace them on me. But so many things have changed in the last 16 years or so and it's not only that my collection has grown considerably larger. No, it's because it keeps getting shuffled all over the place to accommodate other people's stuff! Even more than even having a spotless house, I miss not knowing exactly where all my books are the moment I want them. Of even just to sit proudly gazing at them in all their splendour! Alas first the "spotless house" thing started to go downhill (okay, many rentals homes ago, but still) after I got married way back in '96, but one slobby husband, two teenage foster daughters and now my Dad.....my books, my beautiful little babies...are scattered 'round the house, some on shelves, some in boxes, and some in stacks on the floor! (Some might even be hiding in the garage under mounds of stuff that belongs to everyone but me! :o) Ok, the kids are long grown and out now. One left for the 2nd (and hopefully last) time, a couple of years ago when she lost her job and apartment at the same time, but shortly before that Dad moved in, so she's gone, but him half of his stuff is here now too. Love them all dearly. Really, I do! (Wanna kill 'em sometimes, but that's pretty normal in any family I think. ) But oh how I sometimes I miss my single, childless days... Only for two reasons - my spotless home and all my books neatly organized and shelved! Oh wait, there is one more reason to miss those days, the PEACE and QIUET I used to enjoy! The ME time I could take every day. I'm sure many here at BCF can relate. P.S. To be fair, I should state that hubby does clean, but since I started getting sick years ago, the house has suffered. A lot. There's his cleaning and then there's my cleaning, and they are two completely different things! Need to win lottery so I can hire a full-time cleaning service. Maybe if you spread the word in Finland about how those primitive and barbaric Canadians have become selling books in such stores, yours will get jealous and start doing the same so as not to be shown up by us Canucks! Pixie
Sniffles, little tear of mourning here. You just made me jealous. Seriously, don't feel jealous. It's overwhelming. I sometimes look at all my books and feel like crying, wondering when I will get to them all.
Brian.
I have recently realised just how many books I have got rid of this year. I don't tend to re-read books so I decided to slowly get rid of anything that I have read unless I found it amazing, Alone in Berlin being one I would keep. My TBR of fiction currently sits at just over 100 if my memory serves me well, non-fiction probably about 80ish mark. Leaving these aside I think I must have given away between 150-200 books with many more to go. At first I thought it would be impossible but slowly I got used to it and now my bookcases are far less intimidating. It's strangely liberating. Joseph
I love the idea of sharing books. I own more than have at home, but they are traveling around and spreading the inspirational thoughts. I think there are approx. 50 in my book shelf.

Amelie
Buying books is addictive! The sad thing is, they take up too much space in my apartment, so the day I'll have to sell some is approaching fast
muggle not
We are giving away to "Goodwill" 40 books today, probably about half hardcover and half paperback. When we moved from our other house to current we gave away to the library approx. 100 books.
Nollaig
I own somewhere near 300, but I think this year I may have a cull. 300 books take up a lot of space, and while I like the idea of having a little library, there's no point in hanging onto books I'll never read! Phil1980
I own about 150 physical books but must admit I have converted to reading on an Ipad, I know most people like to have an actual book in their hands, but I really do recommend this method of reading. You don't have to lick your fingers to turn a page for one thing haha
Nollaig
I have an e-reader now, but I will always want my favourite (and the prettiest!) books in treebook form. E-readers are for books I could take or leave, or want to read before I can afford a treecopy.
StormyRaincloud
How many books do I own? Athena
I own 1000+ books. If I also count my children's books (and books meant for teenagers), I'd have 1500+ books I think. There are plenty more on my wishlist .

We have a thread where you can post pictures of your bookcases, if you like you could post a picture of the new bookcase there some day I own 1000+ books. Athena
That's quite a collection! Thanks We have a thread where you can post pictures of your bookcases I'll have to make some new pictures and post them! I was already wondering if there was a topic about it. I have some pictures of my book cases, but since some of the books are hidden behind other books, I only have photos of the outside rows. It would be good if I made some photos of the inside rows too. I know, I need more space XD. EDIT: Hmm I'm now realising, it would be quite a bit of work if I want to pull out all the books on the outer rows XD. I'll have to have a think about it!
