Well Hello

Hi, I'm a brand new member and v excited about joining. I'm from the UK and read just about anything from travel (love Bill Bryson) to autobiographical to historical novels and thrillers. All I do know is that if it doesn't grab me within the first couple of pages it's a big no no and doesn't get finished. I'm currently reading A God In Ruins by Kate Atkinson and I think it's fantastic. So where are people from and what are you into?

Thank you all ☺️ Flip Martian ( or anyone of course) have you read The Road To Little Dribbling? If so what did you think. Also, if you've seen it what did you think about the film of A Walk in the Woods?? Should I be posting about this elsewhere in the forum? Anyway, how's Alec Guinness grabbing you?

Hiya

I think there is a Bill Bryson thread in the Non Fiction section - but I don't think you'll get shot for posting in here :D

I enjoyed The Road to Little Dribbling - it makes a nice follow up to Notes From a Small Island. Interesting to see the differences in his writing over time though - he does come across sometimes as a "grumbling old git" at times (conscious of doing this myself these days!) but is still funny throughout the book - its just he did seem a little negative about some things; more so than in previous travelogues. I've not seen Walk In The Woods; I wanted to read the book again first (I read the book when it came out and I don't remember enjoying it much, not sure why).

The Alec Guinness I'm just finishing - its clear he's only letting readers know a bit about him, but its entertaining - just whatever he's doing or thinking each day which often leads back to stories from years gone by. He's over 80 at the time of writing and its clear he's feeling his age a bit. I think he comes across as not being entirely happy with his lot in life - his biographies say as much. He writes really well; very descriptive and not without wit - he's very funny without trying for laughs, if that makes sense. Its an interesting follow up to his own autobiography written in the 80s (this was written about 10 years later). I'm quite keen on film related biogs, so this is up my street. :)

Nope :D! It's perfectly okay to talk about it in your introduction topic. (And in case you want to read older people's posts: here is the Bill Bryson thread).

I'm not sure, I never use the chat to be honest (it seems I can login though). It could be because you're a new member (as opposed to a 'member' / regular member), you might need more than 10 posts I think? I'm not sure (I've "only" been here since 2013 and I haven't heard the chat mentioned that often), but I think if you post here in the Ask a Mod topic, then Michelle or another staff member might be able to help you.

Hello and welcome to the BCF  :006:

Edit:Sorry about the double welcome; the computer seems to having a senior moment, not me! :D
