A-to-Z bookish survey tag

Recommended Posts

I saw this tag on a blog, it originally came from Sarah Sunbeemz on YouTube: her video. It seems interesting to me, I thought I'd make a topic and see if anyone wanted to fill it in. Below are the questions, and my answers:

A — Author You’ve Read The Most Books From:

I think it has to be either Ann M. Martin or Geronimo Stilton.

B — Best Sequel Ever:

I'm not sure.

C — Currently Reading:

I'm currently not reading any book. But I'm getting reading to start read-a-thon-ing today, so I'm going to be reading the 'usual' pile of owned books, then library loans. The first one I'll start with is The Anniversary, a QuickReads books with short stories by a bunch of authors, edited by Veronica Henry.

D — Drink of Choice While Reading:

I actually don't normally drink anything while reading, however my drink of choice is almost all of the time, water.

E — E-Reader or Physical Book?:

Phyiscal book. I think an e-reader is great for when you're travelling, but otherwise I much prefer a physical book (for many reasons).

F — Fictional Character You Probably Would Have Dated in High School:

No idea, I don't normally think about characters in that sense.

G — Glad You Gave this Book a Chance:

Most recently, Lois Lowry - The Giver 1: The Giver: Bewaker van Herinneringen (The Giver 1: The Giver).

H — Hidden Gem Book:

I'm not sure, there are quite a few books I've read that I hadn't heard much about.

I — Important Moment in Your Reading Life:

I can't pick just one so I'm going to pick a couple:

- Being read to as a child and going to the library lots, which sparked my love for reading.

- Borrowing The Chronicles of Lontobyn trilogy by David B. Coe from my friend and classmate in secondary school, which sparked my interest in fantasy books.

- Talking with Michael's brother Neil, which told me about his favourite genre science-fiction (which sparked my interest in the genre).

- Going to the book fairs (Het Boekenfestijn), which sparked my interest in lots of genres besides fantasy and science-fiction (such as contemporary fiction, rom-com, detectives, ...)

- Joining this forum

- Starting my own, monthly, read-a-thon

J — Just Finished:

Lois Lowry - The Giver 1: The Giver: Bewaker van Herinneringen (The Giver 1: The Giver).

K – Kinds of Books You Won’t Read?:

Erotica books, most older classics, too scary horror, western books, most books written many years ago. Those come to mind right now.

L – Longest Book You’ve Read:

Stephen King - IT (1376 pages).

M — Major Book Hangover:

Any amazing epic fantasy books, such as The Wheel of Time series or some of Brandon Sanderson's books (such as the Mistborn trilogy or Elantris).

N — Number of Bookshelves You Own:

Well, if we're not counting book cases without books on them (the ones with DVDs and video games), I have about 16 or 17 book cases (depending on how you count). Amount of shelves is 4 + 3 + 3 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 7 + 6 + 6 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 3 part of the house = 99 mobile, 3 immobile = 102.

O — One Book You’ve Read Multiple Times:

Kjartan Poskitt - Waanzinnig om te Weten: Echt Gigantisch Dat Heelal (The Knowledge: The Gobsmacking Galaxy). But there are quite a few books I've read multiple times, in my childhood.

P — Preferred Place to Read:

On the sofa in my living room.

Q — Quote that Inspires You and Gives You All the Feels:

Not sure, I don't really keep any lists of quotes or anything.

R — Reading Regret:

Ever stopping to read lots of different genres and instead focusing on one genre (fantasy),. Though I am glad I discovered fantasy, it would've been nice if I'd still been reading other genres too. That's all I can think of right now.

S — Series You’ve Started and Need to Finish:

Hmm, well, lots of them. But some are series where the books can be read as standalones, and in other cases not all of the books have been released yet. I'm not in the middle of any series that I'm insanely desperate to finish right now. I was in the middle of the Gone series by Michael Grant, which would've been my answer if I hadn't just finished the last book last month.

T — Three of Your All Time Favorite Books:

Only three?! Uhm, Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson - The Wheel of Time series (book 14 if I had to choose), Peter F. Hamilton - Night's Dawn series (I guess book 1 if I had to choose, but only because it was the first epic SF book I read), and Jodi Picoult - My Sister's Keeper. I know two of those are series, but I couldn't choose!

U – Unapologetic Fangirl/boy for:

Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson - The Wheel of Time series.

V — Very Excited for this Release More than Anything:

Brandon Sanderson - Alcatraz 5: Alcatraz Versus the Dark Talent.

W — Worst Bookish Habit

Buying a lot of books, while also loaning (more) books from the library. But I'm happy so :P.

X — X Marks the Spot – Start at the top of your shelf and pick the 27th book off it:

I'm not sure which book case I'd start counting from, so I'm going to use the book case nearest to the computer (my 'TBR-soon' shelves), the top shelf, the 27th book on the bottom horizontal row of vertical spines is John Green - Looking for Alaska.

Y — Your Latest Book Purchase:

The latest books I bought for myself were Brent Weeks - Lightbringer 3: The Broken Eye and Ernest Cline - Armada.

Z — The Zzzzzzzzzzzzz Snatcher Book (Book That Kept You From Sleeping):

None, if I start to get sleepy I generally put the book away and go to bed. Though lately I don't read in the evenings so much anymore anyway.

Is anyone else interested in writing down their answers to these questions? I'm curious about your answers.

This looks fun!  Here are my answers.

A — Author You’ve Read The Most Books From:
William S. Burroughs.

B — Best Sequel Ever:
Stripping Penguins Bare, by Michael Carson

C — Currently Reading:

Life of Pi, by Yann Martel. I wasn't prepared for quite so much zoological and religious discussion at the beginning. Now the story's finally getting going, and I'm finding myself saddened by the wounded/frightened animals...

D — Drink of Choice While Reading:
Tea, I suppose. I'm not particular.

E — E-Reader or Physical Book?:
Physical book. I don't own an E-reader.

F — Fictional Character You Probably Would Have Dated in High School:
Sherlock Holmes would have run a million miles from young, spotty me with the bad hairdo.

G — Glad You Gave this Book a Chance:
The Man from Primrose Lane, by James Renner. Sci-fi isn't usually my thing, but I LOVED this.

H — Hidden Gem Book:
Sam's Song, by Shirley Schoonover. I read it 25 years ago, and it was like nothing I'd ever read before. Peculiar, striking, discomforting, compelling.

I — Important Moment in Your Reading Life:
Most recently that I can think of – becoming a member of GoodReads. It pulled me out of my long reading slump.

J — Just Finished:
Girl Hearts Girl, by Lucy Sutcliffe. Not great. I found the writing style too simple/immature.

K – Kinds of Books You Won’t Read?:
YA and Chick Lit.

L – Longest Book You’ve Read:
A Little Life, by Hanya Yanagihara. 720 pages of gratuitous melodrama that I wish I hadn't bothered with.

M — Major Book Hangover:
Other Voices, Other Rooms, by Truman Capote.

The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde.

N — Number of Bookshelves You Own:
Nine. They're double-deep, though, so I can cram a lot in there!

O — One Book You’ve Read Multiple Times:
The Complete Sherlock Holmes, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

P — Preferred Place to Read:
Bed.

Q — Quote that Inspires You and Gives You All the Feels:
“Cleanse my heart, give me the ability to rage correctly.” (From 'Head to Toe' by Joe Orton)

R — Reading Regret:
My six year reading slump! (I suffered a bereavement and, curiously, stopped reading and listening to music for the longest while. I'm still not fully back with my music, but am happily now reading more than ever.)

S — Series You’ve Started and Need to Finish:
None.

T — Three of Your All Time Favorite Books:
Other Voices, Other Rooms, by Truman Capote

Maurice, by E.M. Forster

Skin Lane, by Neil Bartlett

U – Unapologetic Fangirl/boy for:
The Complete Sherlock Holmes, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

V — Very Excited for this Release More than Anything:
(I can't think of anything I'm excited about. Most of my favourite authors are dead!)

W — Worst Bookish Habit
Reading too slowly. I wish I could pick up the pace, so I could fit more books into my brain.

X — X Marks the Spot – Start at the top of your shelf and pick the 27th book off it:
City of Night, by John Rechy.

Y — Your Latest Book Purchase:
I've been on an Agatha Christie spree of late, so it would be one of her Hercule Poirot novels. Let's say it was Sad Cypress.

Z — The Zzzzzzzzzzzzz Snatcher Book (Book That Kept You From Sleeping):
The Man from Primrose Lane, by James Renner.

A — Author You’ve Read The Most Books From:
I can't be sure but I'm fairly certain that it's Anni Polva, who wrote the Finnish girls' book series Tiina, which I loved as a kid. She also wrote a number of chick lit books, some of which I've read. They are a bit dated, but rather darling anyways. :)

H — Hidden Gem Book:
What does this even mean... I'll say She Who Remembers by Linda Lay Shuler as I totally love the book and I think it's amazing and I wish more people would read it, but nobody ever does.

I'll also mention the Shadow-series by Maria Gripe, and that one is a hidden gem because it's not been translated into English  :cry2:

I — Important Moment in Your Reading Life:
The times when I got my library cards. And when I found this forum.

J — Just Finished:
Veljen vaimo by Henna Helmi Heinonen. Finnish chick-lit.

K – Kinds of Books You Won’t Read?:

I'm enjoying reading all of these responses!

I read Junky and liked it but Naked Lunch was too much for me at the time (I was about 18) and haven't been able to give it another go!

Very interesting answers, everyone! I enjoy reading them :).

A — Author You’ve Read The Most Books From:
Even though it's a pseudonym, this has to be Nancy Drew. When I was younger I was obsessed with these books and have accumulated an enormous collection.

B — Best Sequel Ever:
I want to say A Court of Mist and Fury just because it stands out as so much better in contrast with the first book. There are many great sequels that are overshadowed by an amazing first book but for this one I liked the first one and loved the second.

C — Currently Reading:
I am in the middle of A Cuckoo's Calling my J. K. Rowling. I was hesitant to reading it because I didn't enjoy The Casual Vacancy by her but even though it is slow paced I am captivated by the characters and the story.

D — Drink of Choice While Reading:
It's either tea or water depending on the weather.

E — E-Reader or Physical Book?:
Physical book. I've found overtime that I get impatient with e-books and there are stories that I will hate when reading them on a screen but when I get it in physical copy I quite enjoy them.

F — Fictional Character You Probably Would Have Dated in High School:
I never picture myself with characters in books. I prefer to ship them with each other.

G — Glad You Gave this Book a Chance:
I was hesitant to read The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne because I struggle with classics but this book did not feel old in the slightest. The translator did an amazing job. I can't wait to read more by Verne.

H — Hidden Gem Book:
In recent years most of the books that I read are the big names ones that have gotten a lot of attention. If I have to give an answer it would be the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy pair-up books. I didn't discover these books until I was twelve, after having spent years reading both of them on their own, and my brain was blown. My first ship was Nancy Drew with Frank Hardy and the fact that there were hints of that in these books made me so happy.

I — Important Moment in Your Reading Life:
I have always read a lot but the moment I remember most clearly of instigating the most intense reading period of my life (grade 6) was The Fairest by Gail Carson Levine because I read the entire thing in one afternoon. Then during the entire year I would read minimum one book a day, hoarding them in my backpack during school so as soon as my school work was over I could read.

J — Just Finished:
I just finished The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins because, while it has been on my shelf for a long time now, I needed to read it before the movie came out.

K – Kinds of Books You Won’t Read?:
Any slow burning books that focus on family relationships or growing up. While they are great once and a while, I prefer more action.

L – Longest Book You’ve Read:
The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon has 1443 pages.

M — Major Book Hangover:

After reading books by Diana Gabaldon, Colleen Hoover, Cassandra Clare, J. K. Rowling, Brandon Sanderson or Patrick Rothfuss.

N — Number of Bookshelves You Own:
I have three bookshelves, as well as books lining my windowsill and desk.

O — One Book You’ve Read Multiple Times:

I used to do a lot of rereading. My favourites were books by Cassandra Clare and Stephenie Meyer.

P — Preferred Place to Read:
On a lawn chair in the sun. Or anywhere by a lake. Camping is really my favourite spot.

Q — Quote that Inspires You and Gives You All the Feels:
Quotes are never that important to me.

R — Reading Regret:
I wish I could read a lot more classics.

S — Series You’ve Started and Need to Finish:
Some of the bigger ones are The Wheel of Time, The Malazan Book of the Fallen, and Runelords. All the others don't have all the books out so there is no way for me to complete them.

T — Three of Your All Time Favorite Books:
The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss, and Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.

U – Unapologetic Fangirl/boy for:
I love Cassandra Clare books so much. They are so addictive.

V — Very Excited for this Release More than Anything:
Doors of Stone by Patrick Rothfuss

W — Worst Bookish Habit
I buy used books without considering if I will actually be motivated enough to read them. When I buy them full price I always read them right away but it's when I only have to spend a couple dollars on them that I go crazy.

X — X Marks the Spot – Start at the top of your shelf and pick the 27th book off it:
Princess in Training by Meg Cabot.

Y — Your Latest Book Purchase:

Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters by Jane Austen and Ben H. Winters

Z — The Zzzzzzzzzzzzz Snatcher Book (Book That Kept You From Sleeping):
The last one that I read that had this effect was The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh.

Oh I love this kind of thing

Here are my answers:

A — Author You’ve Read The Most Books From:

Paullina Simons and Adriana Trigiani - without checking, I think it's pretty much an even tie between these two.

B — Best Sequel Ever:
Tatiana and Alexander by Paullina Simons. I loved the first book in the trilogy - The Bronze Horseman - and thought the second one might be a letdown by comparison. It definitely wasn't!

C — Currently Reading:

American Tabloid by James Ellroy. It's an interesting read, especially to anyone interested in the behind-the-scenes machinations of the Kennedy administration.

D — Drink of Choice While Reading:
Coffee if it's during the morning. Diet Coke if it's in the evening.

E — E-Reader or Physical Book?:
Physical book. I don't have or want an e-reader.

F — Fictional Character You Probably Would Have Dated in High School:
Probably a moody teenager like Holden Caulfield. I wouldn't have the patience for him these days!

G — Glad You Gave this Book a Chance:

Quite a few that I'd put into this category. I recently read The Paradise Trail by Douglas Campbell. It had been on my tbr shelf forever, and I eventually just picked it up on a whim. I loved it! Also A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry...this book was picked out as a choice in real-life (if that makes sense) book club. I groaned when I saw it - it just looked so big and I didn't think it would interest me, but it ended up being one of my favourites of all time.

H — Hidden Gem Book:

Hmmm, I don't know if I'd really call it a hidden gem but I'm going to say The Girl In Times Square by Paullina Simons. Nobody else I've met seems to have heard of it, but it was one of those books that I just could not put down.

I — Important Moment in Your Reading Life:
I think possibly joining LibraryThing, and also joining BCF even though I don't post that often.

J — Just Finished:

Well, I haven't just finished it, but the last book I read before my current read was Snow Hill by Mark Sanderson.

K – Kinds of Books You Won’t Read?:
Generally speaking, horror and sci-fi. I don't mind horror when it is a psychological horror, but monsters and ghosts etc don't interest me.

L – Longest Book You’ve Read:
Gone With the Wind - it was totally worth it though.

M — Major Book Hangover:
I don't really get these. The nearest examples I can think of are Dead Man Walking by Sister Helen Prejean, and Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets by David Simon.

N — Number of Bookshelves You Own:
Six. But each of those has multiple shelves and they are mostly stacked double.

O — One Book You’ve Read Multiple Times:
Emma by Jane Austen.

P — Preferred Place to Read:
The armchair in our living room.

Q — Quote that Inspires You and Gives You All the Feels:
Honestly, I don't think I have these. There are several Shakespeare quotes I love though.

R — Reading Regret:
None. I've always read loads and still do.

S — Series You’ve Started and Need to Finish:
None.

T — Three of Your All Time Favourite Books:

Trying to pick different books than those I've already mentioned in previous answers, I would say...

The Richard Burton Diaries by Richard Burton (obviously!) - such an intelligent, funny man. These diaries make for fascinating and absorbing hours of reading.

The Night Watch by Sarah Waters.

The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald.

U – Unapologetic Fangirl/boy for:

Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding.

V — Very Excited for this Release More than Anything:

None. I don't tend to look out for coming soon books, I like to browse ones that I can have straight away in bookshops!

W — Worst Bookish Habit
Making myself finish every single book I start even if I am really not enjoying it.

X — X Marks the Spot – Start at the top of your shelf and pick the 27th book off it:
Beside Myself by Anthony Sher

Y — Your Latest Book Purchase:

I bought nine books last week (ahem  :blush2: )

I Saw A Man by Owen Sheers

The Lost Swimmer by Ann Turner

Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff

Oliver Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout

Second Life by S J Watson

Fool Me Once by Harlan Coben

I See You by Clare Mackintosh

All Is Not Forgotten by Wendy Walker

Baby Doll by Hollie Overton

Z — The Zzzzzzzzzzzzz Snatcher Book (Book That Kept You From Sleeping):
American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, but mainly because at that time I lived on my own, and it made me too terrified to go to sleep!

Oh, I'm a complete sucker for this type of list, so here goes!

A — Author You’ve Read The Most Books From:
Georges Simenon - I'm steadily working my way through his Maigret novels; still a lot to go!

B — Best Sequel Ever:
Patrick O'Brian's The Mauritius Command is my favourite in the Aubrey-Maturin series so far - but any of the first half dozen after the first, Master and Commander, could be best sequels ever, they are all so good!

C — Currently Reading:
Along The Wall and Watchtowers by Oliver August - the story of a journey he took along the old East-West German border, a few years after the border opened up. Having just returned from that part of the world, it's proving a really interesting read.

D — Drink of Choice While Reading:
Cup of tea, glass of wine, a dram or two, Pimms…..like them all! Which one depends on mood and weather!

E — E-Reader or Physical Book?:
Enjoy both, but would always choose a physical book for preference, as long as the print is a decent size.

F — Fictional Character You Probably Would Have Dated in High School:
The only fictional girl I remember being a fan of as a (younger) teenage reader was Nancy Blackett in Swallows and Amazons - but she would probably have been profoundly uninterested in me!

G — Glad You Gave this Book a Chance:
It took me several goes at reading David Copperfield before I actually managed to finish it when a book group selection. I almost didn't try again, but I'm so glad I did as it proved a real favourite.  My book group has been good for that: more recently, I would probably never have tried The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver if it hadn't been a choice, and I'm so glad I did - I'm reading and enjoying others of her books too now

H — Hidden Gem Book:
Miss Jemima's Swiss Journal is the book upon which Diccon Bewes based his book Slow Train to Switzerland. It's a lively, engaging account of one of the first package tour trips to Switzerland. Doesn't sound especially promising, but I loved it, especially as I read it soon after reading Bewes's book and returning from Switzerland myself. Long out of print, but managed to buy a copy through abebooks. Otherwise, pretty much any book by JL Carr - he appears quite unknown apart from A Month in the Country, but his range is impressive.

I — Important Moment in Your Reading Life:
Quite a lot of moments, but one I'll choose is when my class was given a choice of Barchester Towers or Pickwick Papers to read by my English teacher at 14. I read both, my first adult classics, and have loved classics ever since.

J — Just Finished:
The Blackhouse by Peter May. OK, but yet another thriller/crime novel which I struggle to see why people rave about it.

K – Kinds of Books You Won’t Read?:
Horror is about the only genre I won't touch with a barge pole (and I have tried - just find them boring). Fantasy generally doesn't interest me, but there are exceptions; equally sci-fi. I'm finding thrillers less and less appealing nowadays too - mainly because they often aren't (thrillers).

L – Longest Book You’ve Read:
Using Wikipedia as a guide, it looks like A Suitable Boy, which beats War and Peace on wordcount (English translation).  Both outstanding books.

M — Major Book Hangover:
Don't really know what this means!

Later edit: and now I've found out!  Jane Austen, every time.  But also other Victorian classics authors, for instance Dickens and Eliot.  I didn't know what to do with myself for days/weeks after Middlemarch!

N — Number of Bookshelves You Own:
76 - all pretty much jammed full!

O — One Book You’ve Read Multiple Times:
There's quite a few, especially childhood books (I'm amazed my Kipling and Ransome books still have any print on them!), and pretty much all the Jane Austens, but one that I've read so often I probably never need to read again are the Sherlock Holmes short stories (although that's 4 books, so maybe I should just nominate The Adventures).

P — Preferred Place to Read:
Chair in the front bay window of our sitting room, especially of a morning when the sun is just right.

Q — Quote that Inspires You and Gives You All the Feels:
Can't think of one.

R — Reading Regret:
Not having enough time to read more - work keeps getting in the way; can't wait to retire!

S — Series You’ve Started and Need to Finish:
Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin novels; Donna Leon's Brunetti series. Actually, I'm in no great rush to finish either - half the fun is looking forward to the next one.

T — Three of Your All Time Favorite Books:
A Month in the Country by JL Carr; Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen; A History of the Countryside by Oliver Rackham.

U – Unapologetic Fangirl/boy for:
Georgette Heyer Regency novels!

V — Very Excited for this Release More than Anything:
The third volume of NAM Rodger's titanic history of the Royal Navy, The Price of Victory, is due out in September 2017. It's been a 13-year wait!! Well, you did ask!

W — Worst Bookish Habit
Buying more books than I read.

X — X Marks the Spot – Start at the top of your shelf and pick the 27th book off it:
A Dead Man in Deptford - Anthony Burgess.
(My books start with fiction, which are ordered alphabetically by author)

Y — Your Latest Book Purchase:
Deutschland, Ein Wandermärchen by Anna Magdalena Bӧssen

Z — The Zzzzzzzzzzzzz Snatcher Book (Book That Kept You From Sleeping):
The last book that was simply unputdownable, until I finished it at about 3.30 in the morning, was The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Completely and utterly gripping. A thriller/crime novel that definitely lived up to the name!
