Managing an hour of reading Jeffrey Eugenides' Middlesex each evening recently, but it's an exhausting read, and I didn't realise that it is such an epic! And my Kindle says I have still 28 hours to go

I was flicking through my Kindle last night looking for something to read. I came across Middlesex, but decided to pass on it for now. I didn't realise it was such a big book! :o

I'm reading Smoke Gets In Your Eyes by Caitlin Doughty. It's a non-fiction book about working in a crematorium. I must be in a morbid mood. :hide:

My copy of it is 530 pages. I bought it years ago coz people said it was good, but I just read the back there again and wow I have zero interest in reading this book lol. Good luck!

I'm reading Before I Go To Sleep by S. J. Watson. It's interesting but it lacks oomph, for me.

Just got my library copy of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child today. I was at Barnes and Noble and had sat down with the book to peruse it and trying to decide whether or not to buy it. I left the store without it and when I got home, I had a notification from my library that the ebook copy that I had placed on hold was available. Guess who's settling in for a read? This Lady right here!

Oh no, is that a good or a bad thing? I don't know anything about him except that he is a very well known beatnik writer from the 60's. I guess I'll find out soon enough if he's my cup of tea. :o

The blurb on the back sounded like an edgier version of The Catcher in the Rye.

 In my humble opinion, it's a good thing  Can't read too many of his books in a row, as they get samey, but definitely good as standalones. (Not that they are a series to begin with.) But I know his not everyone's cup of tea!

Awww, it's a shame you're finding it exhausting :(  :empathy:   :empathy:

It's a long novel, but if you get into it and like it, it'll read quickly! Well perhaps not quickly, but you get sucked into it and it doesn't feel as long! I reeeally liked it, and loved that there was so much of it :smile2:

Finished Before I Go To Sleep. I saw the two biggest twists coming from about the halfway mark, and it was too repetitive to be exciting.

Started Apple Tree Yard by Lousie Doughty which has been a source of some contention on an Irish FB book group I'm in. Some people think it's great, others hated one of the characters too much to like it. I've only read the prologue but so far it seems like it's very well written.

Also still working my way through Some Kind of Happiness by Claire Legrand.

It's not been an easy and light read so far ! But now I'm really getting into it, and I feel I've been reading for a week, then I notice that I'm only on Page 67!

I am enjoying the book now, but the first chapters were difficult to follow the plot, and there were too many characters to remember  . Its going to take a long time to read this book, as I'm only page 67 so far, so only 500+ to go  .

Oooh, this one is on my wishlist, and this has had a lot of good reviews, though i'm sure that I will have to be in a light frame of mind when I actually read it  :giggle2:

I'm really enjoying The Girl On The Train- but I need to be dedicated to each character sections, so I'm reading it at night when I can read it without distractions. I've got 50 pages left, so looking forward to finishing it tonight.

I got two of my preorders yesterday. Philippa Gregory's Three Sisters, Three Queens and Johanna Basford's coloring book, Magic Jungle. I don't color in them, just collect them :P. I started Three Sisters, Three Queens yesterday... I don't usually read two books at the same time anymore, but couldn't resist :D

Oh, you should definitely get it! It's a very interesting (with a bit of humour) read. I thought the author was a bit too flippant in the first chapter, but as she reveals more about herself you can see she has a genuine interest in cremation and concern that it is done correctly.  :o:D

Have you had a chance to read Stiff by Mary Roach?

I have...I've read it a couple of times....very entertaining. :D

I finished Smoke Gets In Your Eyes....a really interesting read.

I'm not sure what to read next. I'm still working my way through A Short History of Nearly Everything but I'd like to read a fiction along side it. I'm considering The Distant Hours by Kate Morton but haven't fully made my mind up yet. :readingtwo:

Edit: What am I on about? I decided on Ham on Rye this morning!

I finished Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman last night.

I'm still reading Emma at work on the kindle, but to replace my 'tree-book', I'm going to start Lord of Chaos by Robert Jordan to try and kick on with my TWoT re-read/new-read (as it's now been 2 years since I started it! :o )  I still might pick another book to read side by side though.

I hope you enjoy it :)! I plan to re-read the series some day, when some more time has passed since I last read it.

BB- I loved Stiff :D

Finished The Girl On The Train early this morning and loved it! Glad I stepped out of my usual fare. Probably won't review it, as I don't think I can with out giving anything away!

Continuing on with Philippa Gregory's Three Sisters, Three Queens which I am loving... after the disaster that was The Virgin's Lover. Glad to have Gregory back at her best!

Just saw you'd been reading The Pursuit of Love, Alexi. Have you read Love In A Cold Climate? It was great too. I went on to read a biography The Mitford Girls by Mary Lovell, because they were such a fascinating family.

Just seen this - I've been super busy lately. :(

I haven't read Love in a Cold Climate but I do intend to! I really enjoyed the Pursuit of Love, I rated it as a 4 but I think it lost half a mark simply because I read Emma afterwards. I loved every second of that read.

Just finished At the Sign of the Sugared Plum which was a welcome easy read this week and halfway through A Child Al Confino, which is about a Jewish boy and his mother in Nazi Europe. I had no idea that Italy isolated their Jewish population in such a way.

A not nice side of the Mitford family was their connection with Hitler, the Fascist movement and their anti-semitic views.  Nancy was a moderate socialist but many of the others were closely linked with Hitler and Diana was married to Sir Oswald Mosley, Leader of the British Union of Fascists which included the Blackshirts.

Glad you enjoyed it - I looked back at my review of it this morning from a year and a half ago, and the first thing I said was 'thrillers are not my usual fare'. Guess TGotT was the book that changed that!

Wow, how interesting! I will have to get my hands on the biography :)

Oops :D I'm glad you survived the first few chapters and weathered the great number of characters to remember in the beginning. Yep, it's a bit of a slog, but in my opinion, so rewarding :smile2: Enjoy!! :)

Glad to hear you loved it! :smile2:

I've not been able to get into any novel in the past few days. I have read maybe 60 pages of Charlotte Street by Juliette Mead but I'm not sure if I'll finish... It's not quite what I wanted it to be.

It's going ok, but I need to read it for a decent length of time, instead of 10 minutes here and 15 minutes there!

I also borrowed This Is Life by Dan Rhodes, which I think you gave a rave review recently?
