Chinese writers

Recommended Posts

I really enjoy novels by Chinese writers or novels set in China. I strongly recommend the following and would be grateful for other ideas.

Red Mandarin Dress by Qiu Xiaolong

The Binding Chair by Kathryn Harrison

The Song of Everlasting Sorrow by Wang Anyi

The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston

Also a wonderful collection of short stories:-

The Good Women of China by Xinran

Pearl S Buck has a Pulitzer prize for her trilogy, The Good Earth (I own 10 of her books!) and another book, Wild Swans by Jung Chang is awesome. Good luck, have fun :)

Edit: I hope to get to Tea on the Great Wall by Patricia Luce Chapman this year.

I've also yet to read Peony in Love by Lisa See, it's set in 17th century China. Oh! How could I forget A Concubine for the Family by Amy Kwei and Arching for Beauty by Wang Ping, both are about footbinding. Both are good- but the process is a tad disturbing :P

Oh yes, Pixie! How did I forget Amy Tan... I've only read The Joy Luck Club.

I couldn't find the Han Suyin though!

I just looked - there are used copies on amazon - no link atm cos I'm on kindle fire - you could try with the European version of her name with Han being the surname - incorrect wont accept her first name, Damon this autocorr ext!!

I would suggest books by

Ma Jian (The noodle maker, Red Dust);

Ha Jin (Waiting; under the red flag; the bridegroom);

Dai Sijie (Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress; Mr. Muo's Travelling Couch)

If you want to go further back in time, translations of some of the older classics - Journey to the West, Dreams of the Red Chamber, Romance of the Theee Kingdoms

Or a good translation of Tang poetry (Li Bai; Du Fu)

All the best, and 加油!
