Athena's Reading List 2016

I read Leigh Bardugo - De Grisha 1: Schim en Schaduw (The Grisha 1: Shadow and Bone). It took me a bit of time to get into the book. I was a bit confused by the terminology of things specific to this world. Once I understood better what was going on, though, I really enjoyed the book. There were some great plot twists in the story that I didn't see coming. I liked how some of the world in the book is based on Russia, that's something I haven't seen much in the books I've read up to now. I really enjoyed reading this book.

Absolutely love the pictures of your shelves at the front of this thread!!  Beautiful!  :D  We really need you and frankie to come over here and organize our shelves!!

No, I don't think I posted it in this thread. Well, I don't know on top off my head, since the number goes up all the time . I have all my books catalogued in Book Collector, except for the ones that are still missing (they must be up the attic somewhere, I hope to find them soon). I didn't catalogue my university / school books (non-fiction). Currently I have 4621 physical books if you exclude those uncatalogued, and currently 566 ebooks, mainly for my Kindle (I think most of those were freebies). There are many books I haven't read yet :blush2:. But then a new release comes out or I find a great bargain and I can't help myself :D. But then, I read 500 books last year so maybe it's allowed to invest in the future :P.

Yays!  :readingtwo:  :D

No two ways about it, invest, invest, invest!!  :giggle2:

I bought a few books at the charity shop and I got a few 'for free' by trade. I haven't made the lists for these yet, so that will follow.

In other news, this morning my dad found a lot of my old books up the attic :exc:. They were with my sister's stuff, in a box with her name on it :irked:. But I'm so happy he's found them :D :D. So I will be cataloguing them. During the past weekend my parents found a couple of my books on their book shelves. So there's only a few books missing now (that I can remember) but I have no idea where those could be. My parents also got rid of their old English books so I looked through the pile and took a few that seemed nice to me. Today we finished off our work on the attic!! It looks so much better now.

Hooray for your Dad!  Great news. :D

Thanks, I was so happy :D.

I went to the library sale.. and of course I bought some books :D. There are two I've already read and liked but didn't have my own copy (The Invention of Hugo Cabret and the HOI book by Francine Oomen). I got four English books, which is nice because usually there aren't many interesting English books for sale. There were a few more English books but I wasn't interested in them. I also saw one French and one German book in the sale.

Geronimo Stilton - Geronimo Stilton 19: Het Kasteel Van Markies Kattebas (Il Castello di Zampaciccia Zanzamiao)

Oscar Tortuga - Oscar Tortuga 2: Wie Wint Geronimo? (Om Op Te Eten...) (Sei Ciccia per Gatti Geronimo Stilton!)

Brian Selznick - De Uitvinding Van Hugo Cabret (The Invention of Hugo Cabret)

I read Leigh Bardugo - De Grisha 2: Dreiging en Duisternis (The Grisha 2: Siege and Storm). I liked this book less than book 1. It was a bit slower paced in the middle, and it became a bit too slow at times, less things seemed to be happening and I feel the book could have been shorter by cutting out some things. I did enjoy it overall but it took me longer to read this book, because of the slow middle.

As I said in the Your Book Activity - February 2016 thread, I decided not to read the 3rd Grisha book and also not The Ascendance Trilogy, all of them library loans.

Instead I read Catherine Ryan Hyde - When I Found You. It was really good! I flew through it, I wasn't expecting that as my motivation felt fragile for a day. But I read it in 2 days. This one is in my top 3 favourite CRH books now, after Don't Let Me Go and Where We Belong. It might be a shared second place with Where We Belong, I'm not sure. But that doesn't matter. I really liked this book :). It was emotional and will take me a bit of time to process. I really enjoyed reading this book.

I went to the second hand shop yesterday to drop off some stuff, and I bought some more books :blush2:. I will post a list and photos once I've catalogued the books.

I might read the third book one day (borrowing it again from the library) but I'm not in a huge rush. I didn't like the direction the story was going in and book 2 was quite slow, I didn't feel in the mood for another book like that. But who knows, maybe one day I will borrow the third book and give it another go :).

I'm glad to hear you like The Eye of the World. That makes sense, it is not the best book in the series in my opinion. Anything in particular you struggle with? (without spoiling it for others, otherwise please use spoiler tags).

I went to the second hand shop to drop some stuff off and.. naturally I bought some more books :blush2:. On the plus side, I've decided I'm not going to buy many Kindle books (that I mentioned in an earlier post I was going to buy soon), as I don't really feel in the mood for them right now (and with Kindle books, it's easier to wait because most likely they will be available and for a similar price; also I prefer paperbooks anyway). I seem to not be off to a good start this year so far, in terms of not buying so many books. I will try my best to do better in the future (we'll see..).. though it should be said I bought these books with some of my birthday money from last year, so does that make it technically seen okay :D?

Well, it's not really the story I'm struggling with. And most of the characters I really love! Especially Mat XD

But I find it hard to get back to it when I havnt read for a few days.. Thats also the reason why I stopped reading it last time. Im afraid I wont finish it at the end of the month :(

That makes sense, I can get that too with some books. Gladly, lately I usually have time to read a bit on most days, so it doesn't happen as often. But it's certainly happened to me in the past. I hope you will be able to finish it :).

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey Sarah, I'm okay. Noll is right, I was on holiday (but I don't announce this as I don't like for any strange people to see this). Also, I picked up the stomach flu on my holiday so it will be a few days before I'm well again and caught up to all the posts on the forum. I will read all of your threads soon, once I feel better :).

Thanks, Sarah :).

What I've read lately:

Stephen King - The Stand

Well I finally got around to reading the epicness that is The Stand. I loved the book, it was really good. A couple of minor points, some of the slang was very confusing to me and threw me out of the story on occasion. I could usually read the accents of the people speaking. The many metaphors often went past me, as they usually do; metaphors aren't my strong point. I was also a bit hazy on the geography of it all, as the geography of the United States isn't one of my strong points (mainly because I was never taught it in school). There was one point in the book, where the story got a little bit slow, and I just wanted the book to be over already. But aside from those things, I really enjoyed reading the book. The characters were interesting, the world was interesting, the attention to detail, the epic story. It may seem like I talked a lot about the negative points, but the overall view is definitely a positive one. It was an impressive book.

Ann M. Martin - How to Look for a Lost Dog

This was really good! Thanks to Frankie and Kylie for recommending it to me. I could identify well with the main character. I cried during the book. It was a really good read.

Chrissie Manby - Seashells and Other Stories

Short story collections can be a bit hit or miss for me. This one was pretty good however. There was maybe one disappointing story but most were good to excellent. Chrissie Manby is one of my favourite rom-com authors nowadays and I enjoyed reading this collection.

Shawn Inmon - Rock 'n Roll Heaven

This was an interesting story. It was different, and not the sort of thing I would normally read. I've read other books by this author and liked them. This one he gave away for free when I signed up to his newsletter (and I didn't sign up for that reason). It was a nice story.

Stephen King, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Mike Perkins, Laura Martin - The Stand Graphic Novels 2: American Nightmares

This was nice. I do prefer the actual book though, it gives more detail. But it was a nice adaptation.

What I bought lately:

Michael Jan Friedman - Star Trek: The Next Generation: Reunion

Christopher L. Bennett - Star Trek: Department of Temporal Investigations 1: Watching The Clock

Stephen Baxter - Moonseed

Frank Herbert - Dune Chronicles 5: Heretics Of Dune

Frank Herbert - Dune Chronicles 6: Chapter House Dune

Chris Manby - Marrying for Money

Edward Rutherfurd - Sarum

Liane Moriarty - The Husband's Secret

Ann M. Martin - Babysitters Little Sister 1: Karen's Witch

Joseph Locke - Sabrina The Teenage Witch 6: Ben There, Done That

Cathy East Dubowski - Full House Michelle 5: The Ghost In My Closet

Mary-Kate Olsen, Ashley Olsen, Judy Katschke - Two Of A Kind 3: The Sleepover Secret

Susan Lewis - Don't Let Me Go

Ali McNamara - Actually 3: From Notting Hill With Four Weddings... Actually
