We bought a new tree this year - a 7 foot black one - and decorated it all in blue, white, and silver. I also filled a large vase with baubles and lights to put on the windowsill. As always. we also have paper snowflakes in the window.

Isn't that meant to be unlucky?  Here you're not meant to take them down until 12th Night = 6th January.

I never went in for that. I've kept the tree up and had a sucky year and I've taken them down the same day and had a decent year and vic a versa. I like to go into the new year with a clean and organized house so I just take it down as soon add I can.

Are you allowed to hang overexcited children from the tree and pretend that they're decorations, while you curl up with a good book?

Mine are coming down this Saturday.  Twelfth night, schmelfth night!   :P  I can't stand to have decorations hanging around into any part of January.  (I'm shuddering already to think of the dust piles that will have accumulated beneath the tinsel and the lights across the cabinets and bookcases!)

Here you're not allowed to have the decorations up past the 6th of January I thought, and as far as I know, most people take down their decorations between the 2nd of January and the 6th, at least, usually in my family.

Not allowed, Athena?  You mean someone actually goes around the neighborhoods and checks to see if all decorations are down by the 6th?

When I was a kid the longer the decorations stayed up the better.  Nowadays New Years Day is the latest they stay up, and the countdown to the first day of spring is on! :D

It's what I remember from my childhood . I don't remember who said it. No, no one does, I think it's maybe more about offending a diety? I don't know.
