Allergies

I have a serious allergy to Kiwi fruit. Some other foods affect me too giving me itchy mouth and swollen lips. However Kiwi reaction is very severe, closing my airways.

A lot of people find this a strange allergy,  having not heard of it before.

It is on the increase apparently now more people are eating them.

Does anyone else have a serious food allergy?

Wow, it's not nice to be so seriously allergic to kiwi or fish :(.

When I was a child I was allergic to lactose. I could not drink normal milk and I couldn't eat icecream unless I took medication beforehand. Gladly I grew out of this. It must have been difficult for my parents. I'm glad I'm no longer allergic to lactose.

When I was a child and teenager I was allergic to nuts, any kind of nuts though some were worse than others. That was not fun. I avoided eating any nuts, I had to. To this day I still don't care for nuts, I'll only eat them if they're mish-mashed into something else (ie. chocolate praline cream which I now love, the only thing really I eat nuts in), never on their own (I have tried some, but I didn't like any of them). I was very happy when I was no longer allergic to nuts.

I am still quite allergic to many non-food related things (sometimes tying in with my asthma), such as horses, cats, dust-mites. I wouldn't have known about the horses, but that's what the hospital told me, I was very severely allergic to them. Ever since I found out I've never been near a horse, so I've never tested it.

I am quite allergic to cats, I can't be in a room where a cat has been and of course I can't pet them. In the past I was at first stubborn and pet the cats anyway, because I like cats, only to always regret it after because I felt so bad after. I must be even more allergic to horses than that, so I'm quite glad I never found out how bad that would make me feel. I have no intention of going near a horse. My dust allergies are pretty bad too. When I was a child, I could not stay for 15 minutes in my grandparents' home because of their cat and the dust-mites. It was terrible going there, I always had to leave after a little while. I never wanted to go in, knowing how bad I would feel. But since I was a child, they made me go in. I really didn't like that. For years I have been allergic in bed, strangely when I moved to the bakery last year (a dusty old place), my allergies lessened by quite a lot. I am still very happy about that.

I also have hayfever. I don't know exactly which plants trigger it. I know grass does, at least. I'm fortunate though that I don't have it as bad as my dad does, he has it a lot worse. Unfortunately though I am not allowed to take the usual tablets for it as it would interfere with my current medication. So when I am affected, generally in spring, I can't do anything about it.

Things could be a lot worse though. None of my allergies make that I'd have to be rushed off to the hospital in an instant after being in contact with something (though I've never tested the horses allergy, for good reason). Allergies can be quite annoying :(. I feel for those who have it worse than me.

I am allergic to cats, dust and have hay fever all year round.  I take antihistamines all year round which helps with my allergies and I have asthma and use my inhalers twice every day.

We did not realise I was allergic to cats until we got our two girls, was told to get rid of them but did not, if taking tablets and an inhaler kept everything at bay it was worth it for the joy they brought to our lives.
