A new tv series based on Bernard Cornwell's series of novels called 'The Warrior Chronicles' (which I noticed on Amazon has now been re-named 'The Last Kingdom Series'  ) about Alfred the Great and the Vikings:

Has already started in the US, starts on BBC 2 next Thursday, 22nd October, at 9pm.

Looks great - I love the books so really hope they've done a good job with it :exc:

I've read the first book. I liked it, though it took a while for me to really get going. Have the 2nd, and randomly, the 7th. Am interested in checking out the show when it arrives on UK screens.

Looking forward to this one.  :D

* I think * I have a couple of the books. Somewhere.

I expect you have   It'll be interesting if you ever read them after seeing the series - I've suddenly become quite keen to read the last book to get up to date before the show starts so that my imagining of the characters isn't influenced by the actors.  I'm already distracted by the tv Uhtred having dark hair

From what I can gather the first episode covers a good chunk of the first book.  Should be interesting!

I'm really not sure - I just read a review of the first episode and recognised as lot of what it said

I started the 8th book, The Empty Throne, this morning.  Decided I wanted to read it whilst I still had my own versions of the characters in my head, rather than those of the actors  :giggle2:

I`ll see how much I like the TV show before even thinking of reading them.  ;)

What if it's a poor adaptation?  The books are fantastic - it'd be a shame to miss out on them if they've stuffed up the tv show

*I think * I`ve only got one of the books - Sword Song - and the rest are the Arthur books.

I`ll see how I feel about getting the books after I`ve seen the show.  :D

Yeah, the set-up was a bit predictable.  It was better in the book, IIRC.  As you say, the episode covers a lot of ground, but I didn't feel like they rushed it.

Ep 1 stuff:

I would've liked it to spend more time with Ragnar and his son, so you could see why Uhtred became as loyal to them as he did.  I remember from the book how much I liked both of them.  They lost a bit of that in favour of moving the episode along and getting to the 'present' and older Uhtred.  At the start I thought the kid playing young Uhtred was going to annoy me, but I ended up liking him, and I'd just got into that frame of mind when they cut to his grown-up self

Also, in the book the battle where Uhtred was captured took place inside and outside the walls of York (Eoferwic).  I guess the BBC budget couldn't quite stretch to it.  That particular change interested me, because the Danish tactics in that battle were referenced in the 8th book, The Empty Throne, so it was quite fresh in my memory.

Just caught up with the first episode, and aside from a few occasions where we winced and ouch-ouch-bloody-ouch'ed at the more 'graphic' moments, thought it was pretty darned good. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Have to say that we also thought the young version of Uhtred was going to be annoying, but both the actor and his character quickly drew us in.

:o  So not content with making a series of His Dark Materials, Bad Wolf are also . . .

Variety can also exclusively reveal that the company is developing an adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s trilogy “The Warlord Chronicles,” which is a revisionist take on the King Arthur legend. “He is a great storyteller as we know from everything from ‘Sharpe’ to ‘The Last Kingdom,’” Gardner said. “He has a very innovative way into the Arthurian stories, which is to take an ordinary man who by work, chance and life is an observer and an intimate in the relationships of Arthur, Lancelot and the key characters that we know.”

One of my favourite trilogies  :exc:  :exc:
