I wonder if anyone here could clarify it? The book is Semper Fidelis, by Ruth Downie, starring the army medic Gaius Petreius Ruso, in ancient Roman Britain. (SPOILERS) Late in the book, the high-ranking officer Geminus is killed. It is strongly hinted that he was killed by Emperor Hadrian's Pretorian Guard, under the orders of Hadrian's wife (Sabina?). But: 1) Why would she care enough about the fact that Geminus was making British soldiers fight each other to the death that Sabina would have Geminus killed? 2) Why would the Pretorian Guard (or any soldiers in it) obey/cooperate with her anyway?
