Marie H
Here's a pic of Winny being an adorable doof last night, then a follow-up pic when I kicked him off the ottoman so I could turn on the fan. He sure does have a cute "I'm being put out by your needs, mama!" face! Wow, those eyes are AMAZING!!! Sadly, my oldie Lily passed away yesterday. Cancer. It' so sad... I miss her eyes. Oh, I am sorry about your Lily passing away

frankie
I'm so sorry to hear about Lily, Eleonora! I've met a big, big dog in the hallway a few times, and today I asked the owner what breed he is. He's humongous! He's a Neapolitan Mastiff. The first time I met him, I was going downstairs to take out the trash and the woman had just opened the door to go in, and the dog was coming up the stairs. I halted to let the dog go in because he was so big I didn't think I'd manage to walk past him in the stairs The owner said 'it's a friendly one' and because the dog had by then turned and started going downstairs, I was left wondering if the owner had meant to tell me that the dog's friendly or the dog that I'm friendly I hope I didn't scare him! Today I saw him again and asked about the breed. Here's a picture of someone's Neapolitan Mastiff. Edited March 24, 2015 by frankie
bobblybear
Very sorry to hear about Lily, Eleonora. Frankie, those are massive dogs. I don't think I've ever seen one in person, but I have heard of them. We saw a huge dog a couple of weeks ago - it was a Leonberger, which wasn't a breed I'd heard of before. Reuben was quite nervous, even though it was very placid and friendly. Reuben's been having some problems with one of his eyes. A couple of weeks ago we noticed that he has a lump on his eyeball (on the white bit), so we have taken him to the vet, and they think he may have something called "nodular granulomatous episcleritis". He is currently on steroid eyedrops, and will be for a few weeks, but if there is no improvement they may need to surgically remove the bump and send it off to be biopsied. Either that, or have him referred to an eye specialist. He doesn't seem to be in any pain, or have any irritation from it, but it's something we have to keep a close eye on. He's enjoying his frequent visits to the vet though.....I've never seen a dog so happy to be taken to the vet. His tail never stops wagging, bless him. And normally I'm really really slow and oblivious to the sex of dogs, but this time I wasn't, because well let's just say that he was well massive! I'm a bit perplexed, though, because the owner said he's friendly, but then when I saw him again, the person walking him kept pulling him back. I wonder if they think I was afraid of him or if he's not that friendly after all...? Or if it's just a case of him not liking strange people. Leonbergers are adorable! My Mom once met a woman who owns Leonbergers and works for some association for the breed and she was selling calenders, and the pictures were of her dogs, and there was one special picture dedicated to a young Leonberger pup who became ill and passed on before he was 1 year old. The profits of the calender went for the association. Mom had bought one and she gave it to me for Christmas Reuben's been having some problems with one of his eyes. I'm glad he doesn't seem to mind his condition, I just hope that his eye will improve soon enough And that everything's fine! Why's he so happy to go to the vet? Awww he's the nicest happiest dog

bobblybear
Emotes culled.... He was massive! Maybe it's because such a big dog can be a bit intimidating to many people. I'd be a little bit nervous to see such a large dog. That Leonberger was the biggest dog I've ever seen, and if he were to jump up on me, I'd be flat on my back with no hope in hell. Why's he so happy to go to the vet? Awww he's the nicest happiest dog He just loves the attention. His tail never stops wagging from the moment he's in the waiting room. And if anyone is around, he's always trying to get to them. He'll just sit there and stare at them wagging his tail. As soon as the door opens, he's looking to see who it is, and wagging his tail so hard that his whole body wiggles. People give him a lot of attention, because he's so friendly looking, which of course re-inforces that the vet is a great place to be. When the receptionist came over to give him a little cuddle yesterday he got so excited that he was spinning in circles. Luckily there weren't too many people in the waiting room. He's also one of those dogs that "smiles" - he lifts his lips up to show his teeth, and it looks so funny. You can tell it's not aggression because his tail is wagging so hard....it just looks so funny. I've never had a dog that smiled before. He also gets treats from the vet, which seals the deal, him being a greedy labrador and all. I'm just glad he stays so positive, because the vet spent quite a bit of time looking into his eyes, pulling back the lids, putting dye in (which then ran out of his nose and mouth - and it was fluorescent green!), shining lights in it, and having to being very hands-on with him. He was a little bit nervous when they were doing all that, but as soon as he gets a treat he forgets about it all. Our last dog had to be muzzled at the vets, and still kept trying to have a go at them, so it's nice to have a pup who's so easy. I hope Reuben's eye gets better soon . Thanks, Gaia. I keep looking at it, and it seems to be getting smaller but only time will tell. He's due back at the vets in 10 days or so, but I'm going to try to take a picture of his eye so it's easier to notice any changes.

Awwww, with the wagging tail at the vet's What an attention seeker! I like those, because I like to give attention to dogs And for him to want to see who's coming in and if they'll play with him Awwwww!! Do you have pictures of his smiley face on FB or on here? How's he doing these days, by the way? I hope he's on the mend This is not really a pet thing, but I had an interesting day today. Me and the other 4H pet club leader took the kids to a pet store today (and then took them out for an ice-cream as a surprise ) and we got to see fish and rabbits and a spider and a frog and hamsters etc. The one snake that they had was hiding. There were some other animals I'd never even heard of. One of the workers at the store was acting as our host and she got a bunny out so the kids could pet him, and a hamster too. Then she asked if anyone wanted to hold a carausius morosus. I've thought those things are a bit creepy but then I thought heck, I want to! And she got it out and I got to hold it. It was pretty exciting It would walk on my hand and then get on my arm and go up and up and then I was staring at it's face a bit too close for comfort and I told the worker to get it off Its face was a bit scary up close Only two of the kids wanted to hold it, and the other leader wanted to hold it, too. When it was on her palm, it started walking towards her fingers and away from her and so I put my hand under hers and it then got on my hand and started walking up my arm again Edit: I now have a picture, too! frankie
Yep The first time I heard of a stick insect was in a Adrian Mole book, though I think he referred to his Dad's new GF as SI. I never looked it up what it actually meant, but I knew that it must be some sort of skinny, long insect. Duh It's finally nice to know what it was

Chrissy
What a gorgeous pair Icsucr. Their colouring is lovely, (despite this making me sound in urgent need of caffeine) their colours look a kind of cappuccino for one, and a mocha for the other! Athena
We have little baby chicken!! More eggs may hatch, I hope so. But there are a couple now already . They are hiding under their mother, so I haven't seen as much of them as I'd like (but they stay nice and warm there and that's very important). I hope a lot of them make it. We lost a lot of chicken to the fox, and it'd be so lovely to have these little ones with us .

Kylie
Your cats are gorgeous, Icsucr! What breed are they? Aw, such cute chicks, Gaia! Was that you talking on the video? I recently went to the annual Easter Show in Sydney, which is largely an agricultural event. There was an area with lots of baby chicks (I love their chirping!) and there was a sort of glass box with lots of eggs that were in the process of hatching. Some had hatched already, and there was hours-old chicks finding their legs, and other eggs had partially cracked open and you could see the chick moving under the surface and getting ready to arrive. It was awesome!!
Athena
Thanks, Kylie ! Yes, that's me . The quality of the audio isn't great though. That event sounds awesome ! The little ones are becoming less afraid and more adventurous, today we saw them eating:
