Anything about/set in Romania/Bulgaria ... ?

My favourite part of Bram Stoker's Dracula is Harker's initial eastward journey. What little I've picked up about that part of the world and its history is absolutely fascinating. It would be great to read a whole book set there.

Any ideas? As long as "historic" means set in one of a few standard cultures, I generally pass. I'd like to be prived wrong.

You could try Vlad: The Last Confession by CC Humphreys. It's a sort of fictionalised account of the real Dracula (Vlad the Impaler). I had a bit of trouble with the book, but many others have loved it. And while I may not have loved it as much as some, it has certainly stuck with me (it's rather gruesome).

Good question! I just searched through the forum to find what I'd written, but apparently I didn't write any about it (besides noting that it was one of my most disappointing books of the year). I don't recall having a problem with the gruesomeness, and the story itself was interesting, so I guess it must have been the writing I disliked. Sorry I can't remember more! But again, I think I'm in the minority.

I was determined to read The Dead Travel Fast by Deanna Raybourn. Not exactly historic but it was described as a different take on Stoker's novel. Now it's been out for a while, reviewers have found it to be little more than a trashy romance in an unusual setting.

That part of the world deserves better; maybe I should stick with non-fiction.
