Virginia
I don't know if I'm the odd one out but I find that there are certain genres that I read during different seasons. Like right now I am on my British mystery and fantasy kick. Summer time I do longer reads like Gone with the Wind, spring might be "chick flicks" and winter usually means I'm breaking out the classics. Anyone else like this? poppyshake
I don't really differ much in my reading over the year apart from winter when I definitely like more wintry tales and ghost stories .. that sort of thing. I always read A Christmas Carol too .. every year (though often I cheat and listen to it being read .. while I'm stirring up the puddings )
Athena
The past few years I've read Christmas or winter themed books in end of November and December, and one or more horror books in October. In the summer I tend to read a bit more contemporary fiction and summery chick-lit books. I find it adds a little bit to the book to read it at the appropriate time of the year, but it's not a must and a book is still enjoyable at any other time. Generally I try to mix up my genres really. When I was a child I don't think I really read seasonally that much, but I don't remember it exactly. Virginia
I've never found myself consciously pulling my books out at certain times they just seem to appear . It's just that I really started noticing it over the past few years. I seem to have a pattern. I do fit in other books from other genres but I always seem to fall back to these particular books during whatever season. I'm such a creature of habit! I'm like Poppy and Gaia: I usually only really do this around winter time. I like to read books that remind me of Christmas. This year I'm planning on re-reading Terry Pratchett's Hogfather and also one or two of the Harry Potter series (they always remind me of Christmas, since the first couple of films came out around that time of year at the cinema years ago. I also re-watch all of the films around Christmas time, as well as the TV adaptation of Hogfather. ) Other than that, it's usually just non-Christmassy fantasy fiction all year round. emelee
I haven't thought it before. Thinking back, I can't detect a pattern. So I would like to say no.
Janet
Like others, the only seasonal reading I do is Christmas themed in December. Like Kay, I read A Christmas Carol every year. I simply adore the story.
frankie
I always think summers are the best time for thrillers and detective stories, crime novels, and I sometimes try and read more of those during the summer, but truth be told, I haven't done any seasonal reading for a long long time. One semi-tradition I have though: I like to read my Bridget Jones diaries during the Christmas holidays. No particular reason, it was just one Christmas when I read them and then did the same thing the next Christmas. But I don't read them every year. Edit: I know this topic is about different members' personal seasonal books, but I searched for the thread we have on here for winter/snow/Christmas books, in case anyone is interested It is the season for some of us, after all! (I know our Southern hemisphere friends are in the midst of their beautiful spring, but they will also have their Christmas in a bit at least I mean those who celebrate Christmas... Frankie is excessively PC at the moment) Edited October 9, 2014 by frankie
pontalba
I've never really understood the reasoning behind reading certain genres at certain times of the year. I know lots of people do this, but while I go on "tears", reading all of an author at the time, or being attracted to a series of spy or detective stories, it's at no particular time of the year. Now, I will say that I don't usually put up snow scenes as a desktop during the winter........
Athena
Now, I will say that I don't usually put up snow scenes as a desktop during the winter........ I've done that sometimes, change my desktop to fit with the season. P.S. Last night I dreamt a nice dream about Christmas. Later in the night though I had a scary dream about wasps. RobertSouthard
Mystery is a niche genre, but I don't like the read book season wise, I read books according to my interests. You should read old mysterious books they are very good.
Ben
I definitely don't do this with literature, but what I will say is that I do vary my music-listening habits by season--particularly as winter rolls around.
Kylie
Like others, I try to read A Christmas Carol around Christmas time every year, although I don't always succeed. In the past year I bought The Annotated A Christmas Carol and Quentin Blake's A Christmas Carol. I haven't read either one yet, so I'm spoilt for choice this year (and I have at least two paperbacks on the book as well). I'm thinking of reading JRR Tolkien's charming Letters from Father Christmas this year as well. The only other seasonal reading I engage in is trying to read something horror-themed around Halloween (even though it's not a holiday I celebrate). I totally understand why people would read, say, cozy mysteries during winter. I love the image of curling up by a fireplace with a hot chocolate and reading something wonderfully atmospheric and creepy, but unfortunately our winters are so mild here that doing this is pretty much out of the question! bobblybear
I don't do any sort of seasonal reading. I'm happy to read any kind of book regardless of the time of year.
