What's up in October for you?

There are quite a few things going on for me in the next few weeks. It's my birthday in a few weeks, there's a book fair at the end of the month, I'll be visiting the nurse and the therapist, and there's a book trade event I want to go to. Today I plan on going for a little walk in the neighbourhood.

My eldest son, Xander, who just turned six, is spending this month doing a sponsored read-a-thon for Sendacow.org.uk through his school - he's very enthusiastic and has vowed to read his first book of the month this evening. Hubby has sponsored him 50p per book, and I am sponsoring him 5p per page. Very proud of him! :)

We're wrapped up in schools and colleges - Beth is in year 11, and she doesn't want to stay on, so she's looking into colleges; whilst Amy is in year 6, and we're visiting secondary schools, and waiting for the 11+ results. My head is spinning with the different options etc available, and having both at once is double spin!

Today is a beautiful day. The sun is shining and the temps are lovely. Hubby got up and made pancakes for the little ones and I've gotten them dressed and started on their school work.

We'll be home today, I plan to let them outside to do some crafty stuff. Little Sally is very clingy in the morning so whatever I do requires me to do it with one hand. The baby is still sleeping and the dogs are flea scratching.

Within the next week or so I need to develop a really good homeschooling program for the kids as public school looks out of the question (mommy can't get it together enough to get me the paper work to enroll them, "it seems to permanent.") so, I'll provide their schooling until such time as they are returned at home or I have permanent custody.

I also want to start moving my books into the house and cleaning my storage area out so I can actually STORE stuff in there! There are some festivals and such that I want to try to make depending on childcare. Mustn't stop living cause I'm caring for my grands.

Wow, good luck with the homeschooling! In the Netherlands it isn't allowed, all children must go to school once they are of age (I believe it's between 4 or 6 and 16?), which can be a problem if a child has a special disability or something like that. I presume though you'll be able to buy materials such as school books or exercise forms or such? Or do you have to make it up yourself?

I hope you'll be able to move the books in the house and use your storage area for storing stuff :).

Yes, we're lucky to have that option. Our school system here sucks, to put it nicely. I can purchase my materials, create my own or use a state sponsored k12 program (which defeats the purpose of getting away state education). Thank God for the awesome online resources available for free!

That's great to hear! I'm sorry to hear your school system is so rubbish :(. My boyfriend says the same thing about the UK system (where it's also allowed to have home schooling). Our Dutch system is pretty good as far as I know, at least when I grew up. It's not perfect, but I learned a lot of important things. Good luck teaching the grandchildren :).

Slept a little later today but already I'm feeling a little tired. Getting five little ones fed, dressed and settled for the morning can do that. I have to take the dogs to the groomers this afternoon so hubby will come home and stay with the kids while I do that. Its pretty much my escape, lol. The critters are so filthy. Kizzy hasn't been to the groomers in over a month, right before we moved. King may have been groomed before we got him but I can't be sure. He broke his collar so I had to purchase a new one just I can take him to Petsmart. I also need to get him his new name tag and get Kizzy a new one also as it has our old address on it. Their chips are up to date but its so much simpler to have the tags on.

Seems a waste of money because they will come home and go into the back yard and dig in the dirt...

We also have a visitation from social services for us to sign some papers for the children. Tomorrow I will be taking them to visit their mom and maybe their dad, we'll see.

I really admire the way you've handled all of this business with the grandchildren, Virginia.  I can only imagine how rough it is.  Family ain't easy.

Well.  Late last night we walked into the darkened kitchen, looking for something to nibble on.....I turned the light on and glanced at the floor in front of the sink and there was a brown with spots, at least 2 and a half foot long, skinny snake there.    I stopped dead and I'm afraid I screamed.  Husband was on the other side of the kitchen, there is a high, small two seater table in the middle of the kitchen.  I told him to get the sledge hammer I keep in the space between the fridge and the wall.......well, that was the end of the snake.  But it was pretty scary while it lasted.

We're not sure what kind it was, possibly a grey rat snake.  We both looked at pictures online last night, but can't be sure.

Good luck with the dogs and the grandchildren! I agree with Pontalba, I also really admire the way you're handling everything.

Wow, that must have been so scary! Are snakes common in your area? We don't have them here at all as far as I know, except for in zoos and a few people might have some as pets.

Yes, there are loads of varieties around here, poisonous and non. We are in the pine woods up here, but it's much clearer around the house.  I just don't know how on earth it got in the house!  Apparently they can get into teeny cracks, somewhere, at times.  This is only the second time in 20 years, so I guess that isn't too bad........./groan/

Wow.. I'm glad that's not too bad then, but it's still scary!

The read-a-thon is coming up tomorrow, so I've told myself I can't do any more reading today (after finishing my previous book), as to make this weekend all the more fun, but it's a little bit difficult because I want to read! Hopefully my mojo won't desert me too soon.

Tonight we've invited my mum over for dinner so we'll be having a meal with the three of us (my dad has an evening appointment for his work).

Just had my flu jab … ouch!  Sore arm now, but worth it to reduce the risk of catching a nasty flu virus.

The one time I did get a flu shot, I had a very weird reaction to it.  The skin on my torso was very sore and sensitive for almost a year afterwards.  So, never again for me.

Ow, that doesn't sound good.  I've had them for years, and I'm lucky I've never had a bad reaction.  They do check each time to make sure you've never had a bad reaction, and that you're not allergic to eggs or chicken, but I've never heard anyone else have a problem.

Many years ago, we knew a woman that developed Guillain-Barre Syndrome after she'd had a flu shot.  From what we were told, that can be a slightly possible side effect of the flu shot.  Of course that same woman had gone outside in short sleeves in a cold February afternoon as well.  Considering the cause and effect of the immune system, that could have exacerbated the situation.  Dunno.

In the Netherlands the flu shot is only paid for, for children and people at risk, such as the elderly or people with severe asthma (like my sister, mine isn't severe enough). I don't think I've ever had a flu shot, does everyone get them in the US and UK? Instead I get the flu sometimes..

I shudder reading this. A snake in the house is my worst nightmare!

You can get them at most stores, such as Walgreens or Wal-Mart, that have a pharmacy. They cost around $30-$40. My work will have them for $25.

As we are with Tri-care (military) our shots are always free. Thank God for that.

Traveling 1.5 hours to take the kids for their visitations with the parents, then headed back home. Spent too much at Petsmart yesterday. Seems my boy King came complete with his own little "friends." He had so many fleas he could create his own country. Both dogs needed extra dips, $113 for both, ugh. Oh well, no midnight scratch fests that wake us out of our sleep!

Have a great one everyone!

We are big toast lovers in my family.  When P started eating toast for the first time at a year old, I text my best friend and told her.  She said "The next in a long line of toast lovers"  :D

I don't eat breakfast during the week as I just don't have time, so Sunday is always a treat to have time with nothing else to do in the day, to have proper toast and lashings of butter!  It's a lovely start to the morning with a cuppa and my book, it's a perfect lazy weekend breakfast. :D
