I just read of a similar attack in Russia as well where 8 people were stabbed.

Yeah I read about that too, later that day. Horrible :(   All of these are just terrible in themselves, but it was all the more horrible when they all happened within two days :(  And the attack in Russia - going by the headline alone - sounded so similar to the attack in Finland that one immediately wondered if there was a connection. :(

I loved how a Spanish swimmer honored the victims at the start of his swimming race.

That news story about the 13 year old teenager being forced into splits at cheerleader camp (resulting in a torn muscle and torn ligament) is awful. I found the video of it very difficult to watch, the poor girl was so distressed and begging them to stop. (She was being held in position by three teammates and pushed down by her coach.) Apparently several other girls experienced the same, with similar videos taken. The coach has since been fired, and apparently was fired from a previous role for similar reasons.

The worst part, for me, was when I read the comments on an American based report of it, loads of women and girls were saying 'it's standard practice, I had this done to me and I didn't cry like this.' Other girls said 'it's not right, but it's very common.' Appalling! Even in the video you can hear the other girls telling her to stop crying and just do it.

I don't understand cheerleading anyway, I'm very grateful it's not something Irish culture has adopted, but even in the case of general gymastics that is such a dreadful approach to training :(

That sounds terrible :(. Cheerleading isn't a thing in the Netherlands either (gladly). My sister and I were on gymnastics as older children and younger teenagers, but no one was ever forced to do a split or something else if they really didn't want to (I was in the normal group and my sister in the advanced, my group didn't do much splits, I could never do it).

Me neither - and I don't think I would want to try!

Cheerleading has always seemed a strange sort of sport to me anyway - I just don't really see the point of it. There is no excuse though for treating anyone like this, and I am glad they got rid of that coach.

It's always seemed strange to me too, but that may be because of the TV representation of it - I see it as cliquey, only for popular girls etc. I don't know if that's actually true, though if it is, that alone would be enough to put me off! I suppose it's a good way of incorporating school spirit into a gymnastic sport, but I'd rather see ladies on the football field playing for trophies than standing on the sidelines cheering the men. Or, male cheerleaders for the girl teams!

Nope- that's true, it's a vicious activity to do in school.  Expensive too, you have to pay for everything, the school pays for nothing. I hear it's just as bad in professional sports.

Today, we are still dealing with a hurricane near Houston, Texas. Trump brought his entourage yesterday to "visit the people" and made a big fool out of himself- but what else is new? I love Melania's 5 inch high heels getting on Air Force One and the super new, white "trainers" she wore in Houston- after social media called her out on the heels.  How appropriate, 5 inch heels for a disaster zone. Of course, they never set foot in an actual "disaster zone"

The worst mass shooting in modern American history. The count right now is 58 dead and 515 injured outside a Las Vegas casino during a concert.

And the Lt governor of my state wants to make silencers legal.

The thoughts I have in my head right now...

How is it that a free country, the most powerful country in the world, is regressing to prehistoric civilization?

It was shocking news about Las Vegas, but I find it equally astounding how there is still no debate on gun control in America and how defensive some people get about it.

The most telling meme I saw went something like this:

- Now is not the time to talk about gun control. We shouldn't talk about this when there has just been a mass shooting.

- So when there hasn't just been a mass shooting, we'll talk about gun control?

- Yes.

- Ok, when's that?

- Never.

:(

I read a letter from someone in the UK who went to the US, was trying to get some wine in a supermarket but when he asked where it was, the assistant said they didn't sell it as it was a family supermarket - meanwhile they were selling guns and ammo.....

Another day, another school mass murder. Young adult shot and killed 17 people during school and injuring many more in Florida. Our "law makers" are offering more "thoughts and prayers."

I was very sorry to see this in the news this morning :(. So sad :(.

Yes that's what I read too. I was listening to Ian Dale on LBC stuck in traffic on the way home tonight and he was talking to this incredibly stupid American guy who was actually saying that the one thing all of these shootings have in common is that they took place in areas of the US where the gun laws are more strict. What this means this man was saying is that it was therefore more difficult for others to take down these attackers with their own guns! According to him the answer lies in relaxing the laws even further to allow teachers to carry concealed weapons while in the classroom. Seriously! Ian was having none of it and told him exactly what he thought as any sane person would.
