Virginia
I decided that I am spending way too much time in English villages and have decided to give my hometown another go. We have some really good writers of the genre and I feel Ineed to give them a chance, so I bought a nook version of a book called "In For A Penny," by Kathyrn Wall. The stories are actually set HERE in my hometown!! Even the names are names I'm familiar with. I'm really looking forward to spending some of the summer viewing my hometown through new eyes. Athena
I hope you enjoy it . I've never read a book set in the town where I live. Some of the Dutch books I've read, didn't specify a town where they took place in, other books have taken place in towns and cities I've visited, but not the one I live in, nor one close to that. I'm from Wake County, NC. Margaret Maron has a lenghtly set of books with Deborah Knott as her protagonist. The books are set in fictional "Colleton County", which is really next door to me, Johnston County. Ms. Maron chose Colleton County as the name because John Colleton was the only Lord Proprietor of NC not to have a county named after him in NC. Knott's father is a wealthy former bootlegger, whose real name you would instantly recognize if you were from this area. Ms Maron has take some liberties with geography when her books required it, but most of the area is still very recognizable.
pontalba
Have you read any of Laura Lippman's book? Not in NC, but kinda close.....Eastern Seaboard at least. Her detective Tess Monaghan is an interesting one. I have read a couple and liked them.

And then, of course, there is Charles Frazier although not from Wake County but still from NC. I live in Guilford County, NC (Greensboro). Pontalba, surely you aren't going to ignore James Lee Burke from your part of deep south.

LittleW
I've never read a book taking place in my hometown either. There's a new trend of hometown books which take place in the "county" where I live, but they seem to ridicule some prejudices, so I don't want to read them. Recently I saw an author writing normal mysteries actually taking place in my city, but first he writes like "He went into a cafe (which, where?), or he picked up his son from school (which, we have several?)", so that it doesn't really feel like home and second I don't really like his style. pontalba
LOL, that's who I was referring to. Sorry I didn't specify! No, my whoops! I just didn't read carefully enough, and had Burke on the brain.
