That's a lot of information! We don't have that many Dutch TV channels (I don't recognise some of those you mention), sometimes I wonder what it'd be like to live in the US and have so many channels at your fingertips. I haven't heard of any of these shows, the premise of some of them sounds nice though.

I'm surprised, too, that that many U.S. channels are available in Sweden.  I couldn't even get most of those channels here unless I paid for them.  When I lived in Japan, we could only get a couple U.S. channels on cable/satellite.

Goodness! Emelee do you plan on watching all of these?

LOL. NO! I just posted the list for me and everyone here so they can see what's coming up and maybe find a few options that you find interesting to check out when they begin.

The US have pretty many channels, and these are only some channels that broadcast scripted tv-series. I left out a few. And did not bother to add channels with documentaries and reality shows and other types of channels. IMO, I can't believe that the US has a channel only for weather. The weather channel. LOL. Who watches that aside from tornado hunters??

I'm surprised, too, that that many U.S. channels are available in Sweden.  I couldn't even get most of those channels here unless I paid for them.  When I lived in Japan, we could only get a couple U.S. channels on cable/satellite.

No no, they are not available in Sweden. But Sweden do buy in many, and I mean MANY, American shows. We don't produce many scripted series ourselves. Sweden does have quite a few channels though. So they import a lot of foreign series. Mostly American, but also some shows from the UK and from Denmark.

I only have Animal Planet and Discovery these days that are American channels. Used to have CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon and VH1 too, but no more. :(

HBO can be seen here but in a slightly other version. HBO Nordic. You have to pay for that one, obviously.

I do like to know what show is from what channel though when I watch a show. It can tell someone a lot. That is why I kept the list in order of channels. For instance, you know instantly that the network channels (ABC, NBC, CBS), while they are the biggest, and filled with commercials to pay for everything, are also the more "tame" shows. No nudity or f-bombs etc. And are pretty much known for a little less quality than shows from cable channels HBO, Showtime, AMC etc. Also, they usually have longer seasons, with around 22 episodes each season. Cable networks usually work with around 12 episodes a season.

The endless list of American TV-channels:

Had to make the list more read-friendly.
Also, I added a list of the shows that were cancelled and won't be returning in fall 2014.

Some shows were renewed, but only for one last season. Two and a half men will end in May 2015, as will Parks and Recreations, Cougar town and Parenthood.

The planned spin-off How I met your dad, was cancelled by CBS after they saw the pilot episode. They did not like it, and decided against airing it. Some other network is allowed to take over if they want.

I will for sure watch Backstrom (Fox) and The Whispers (ABC), and I believe How to get away with murder (ABC) just cause the title is awesome. Possibly Stalker too.  :)

Backstrom is one of the characters from Swedish Leif GW Persson's books. I love that character. I believe Rainn Wilson (from 'The Office') will do a good job.

The Whispers is about aliens and stars Barry Sloane (from 'Revenge') and Brianna Brown. 3 good things.

From what you have said I can pretty much ignore anything that comes from ABC, NBC CBS as TV diarrhoea not worth watching

Not necessarily; sometimes they can hit a home run.  LOST, one of my top five of all time, was really amazing and aired on ABC.  Once Upon a Time, which is also very worth watching, is also ABC.  NBC is usually good for comedies, but those can be rather culture-based, and I can see where it might not translate.  However, NBC has produced some of the most iconic sitcoms in U.S. television history.  In the drama field, NBC produced ER.  Although it ran for a couple seasons longer than it probably should have, it was really groundbreaking at the time and dealt with quite controversial issues with a frankness and realism that hadn't been seen before.  There is a fair amount of fluff as well, but I think discounting network tv altogether is rather like throwing out the baby with the bathwater.  However, I suppose it all depends on what you're looking for. :)

LOL.

No no, they are not available in Sweden. But Sweden do buy in many, and I mean MANY, American shows. We don't produce many scripted series ourselves. Sweden does have quite a few channels though. So they import a lot of foreign series. Mostly American, but also some shows from the UK and from Denmark.

I only have Animal Planet and Discovery these days that are American channels. Used to have CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon and VH1 too, but no more. :(

HBO can be seen here but in a slightly other version. HBO Nordic. You have to pay for that one, obviously.

Good to know. :giggle2:  I was so surprised and confused all at once!  There are so many superfluous channels.  The weather channel is handy if there's a blizzard, hurricane or tornado brewing, but for local weather, network TV is best.  The weather channel never seems to be on the part of the country you need it to be.

I never cared for Two and a Half Men with Ashton Kutcher.  The balance was off.

I didn't know Cougar Town was still on.  I thought it was cancelled years ago.

I thought How I Met Your Dad sounded lame, so I'm kind of glad it didn't go through.

Nah, they have some good shows too. Big bang theory is on CBS, Family Guy is on FOX. ;)

Check the list above for the 65 most watched shows. The top 60 shows are from CBS, NBC, ABC and FOX.

I must have been typing as you were posting!   ;)

This is interesting. A list of the 65 most watched series this season:

(Pretty obvious that CBS is the most watched channel. The channel that I believe everyone has(?) And not too many people have HBO, Showtime, AMC etc who airs shows like Mad men, Veep, Homeland...)

ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and the CW along with various PBS stations are all free here.  TNT, USA and SYFY are among channels offered in a basic cable/satellite package.  Stars, Encore, HBO, Showtime and Cinemax are part of premium movie packages that you can buy in addition to your basic satellite/cable package.  And boy do you pay a premium for those channels!

A fairly large percentage of middle class people have satellite TV.  Not all of them have movie packages, but it's not at all uncommon.  In some areas, in order to get reception, you have to pay for satellite/cable.  I do have to say that since they switched to all digital and added an expanded number of channels, I come across more people who seem to be opting out of satellite altogether, though.

Interesting. Can you tell me why CBS is the biggest network in the US? I know that a 1.2 rating on CBS equals less number of viewers than what a 1.2 rating is on ABC for instance. I never really understood the ratings system (we don't have that here). Has CBS always been the biggest network, or has that changed over time?

While today's technology offers so much, it's becoming harder to keep track on what's out there and some things just get complicated.

A lot of people in Sweden choose one satellite company and go with one of their packages. They usually offer Small, Medium & Large packages. I might get a package one day, but until then, I am happy with my 15 channels that I get for "free" (part of the rent, that is), which is a Medium package. We have the opportunity thought to get the Large package, but that means we have to pay for it. But the channels in the Large package via that company isn't worth the money IMO.

That was good info. Thanks emelee. You are the TV queen here! What you said made sense. I rate HBO because they did Rome in collaboration with BBC.  I love that first series! From what you have said I can pretty much ignore anything that comes from ABC, NBC CBS as TV diarrhoea not worth watching

I forgot to mention... TWIN PEAKS! That show was broadcasted on ABC.

And NBC broadcasted Seinfeld.

I don't think CBS has ever been the biggest.  Ratings wise it seems NBC has traditionally been the most successful, especially in the area of comedies.  ABC tends to do really well because they have stuff that's a bit different.  (Case in point:  Twin Peaks, Modern Family, Once Upon a Time) CBS seems to do a lot of crime/mystery/action type stuff.  They're kind of hit or miss.  Obviously, Big Bang and How I Met Your Mother are two of their hits.  They've kind of beaten the whole CSI thing to death, though.  CSI Miami, Vegas, New York...it's like they couldn't come up with anything better.

A basic satellite package is usually a little more than $40/month.  People who go all out with movie & sports packages spend a lot more.  I can't see spending $500.00/year on TV, so we just watch the free stuff and get the rest when it comes out on Netflix.

I agree. I think ABC and NBC are the front runners on the local broadcast companies.   I think How I Met Your Mother was the only show I watch on CBS and now it has ended, so I will probably never watch it.

My bill for satellite is $114/month, but I have dvr and HD.  It is outrageous! But I have to have HD or I can't get CBS, ABC,NBC, etc. because trees are blocking out the satellite in space and it has to bounce off the hd satellite so I can get those channels or some mumbo jumbo like that. So I end up paying more just to get those basic channels.  I think I paid close to $140/month when I had the HBO and Showtime package.  I've been thinking of switching to digital.

My friend has all the bells and whistles on his satellite service.  He pays well over $150/month.  o_O

I have found that the price you pay can be negotiated. I have a "bundle"........TV, Internet, and Telephone all in one package and it costs me about $122 per month. It includes:

Approx. 137 TV Channels including HBO

Unlimited local and long distance telephone

Extreme (high speed) Internet
