What's up in March?

Michelle

Here we are - March already! It's my birthday today, at 41 I've decided that once you hit 40 it should start going backwards! Wednesday is Amy's birthday, she'll be hitting double figures for the 1st time! She has a craft party planned for next Saturday.

How's everyone else doing?

Happy Birthday :sign0072:

I had an Open University tutorial today and I am slowly getting towards the end of my first module. Surprisingly only 3 out of about 20 students bothered to show up. I find it amazing that people who have either paid or are funded to do a course wouldn't make full use of the tutorials. I was a little concerned about the next assignment but after we had a discussion about it I am fairly confident that I shouldn't have any problems doing it.

I have also had a little more reading time in the past week so hopefully before long I can start to post some reviews again. The weather is getting nicer as well which is always a great boost.

Happy Birthday, Michelle!!

Brian, good luck with your assignments. I could also never understand why students would skip certain things, I went to nearly everything.

Lovesreading, that sounds very nice! I wish you lots of fun once you move in :).

I'll be resting the next few days, after getting a gash in my leg a few days ago and going out, I'm quite tired from it all.

Happy birthday to you and Amy!  I hope the party is a wonderful success.

Lovesreading, congratulations on your first apartment; how exciting!  The list of things one needs does seem to be never-ending.

Athena, I hope your leg heals soon.  It does sound like you need some rest!

It's Carnival where I live, so there has been a constant stream of parades leading up to Mardi Gras.  It's been incredibly fun, but I'm starting to look forward to a return to normalcy.  :)

Happy birthday Michelle,

may you have many more no matter how you number them lol.

Good luck with your new home, Lovesreading.

I currently have a sore foot, sprained it but its seems to be getting better.  I can walk without limping now but just can't be running all over the place.  I'm also changing jobs.

I start my new job today - in just over an hour. Normally I will work from 8-4, but during the first week because there is a lot of training, it will be 9-5.

I rang my friend from the old place last night and she told me she gave them hell at her own grievance. The woman from HR kept interrupting her and she told her to shut up as this was her hearing and not be so bloody rude ! :giggle2:  Well, she is from Yorkshire ... I would love though to have been a fly on the wall.

Thanks :). We're having carnival too here. I don't like it at all, mostly I'm annoyed over all the parties with their loud music that I can hear in my bedroom. I've never liked carnaval, here it's about drinking and partying in a fancy costume with loud carnaval music (smoking used to be part of it too until it became the law you can't smoke in cafes). I don't mind the parades, though I've not been to one. At primary school we had to dress up and it was noisy and busy and loud in the main hall with all the children. It's too chaotic for me :blush2:.

Athena hope you leg gets better asap.

Good luck!! I hope it's a lot better than your old job :).

We're doing some DIY to the bakery so we'll have to sleep in my bedroom in the main house for a few days until the floor has dried and the smell has gone. The matrass isn't optimal to sleep on and we don't have a TV in my old bedroom but it should be warmer than the bakery. Soon we'll be taking all the stuff we need from the bakery to the main house.

What a difference a day can make - and what a difference a new job can make too ! This new one seems to be everything the old one wasn't. For one thing, they were actually expecting me, and I wasn't told off for drinking either. Rather than working with the elderly, this is a care and learning facility for disabled adults - the disabilities are right across the spectrum with a lot of Downs and autism and that kind of thing. I have made friends already with three of them though, who the moment they met me gave me a great big hug - something that never happened at the old place ! It will I suspect be hard work, but then the best things always are, and I have never been afraid of that.

Managed to get through the whole day without hearing any spoilers about the Oscars, so watched the ceremony this evening without having any idea who'd won, although I think the winners were fairly predictable on the whole this year.  Of course, the benefit of watching this evening was I could fast forward through adverts and songs, and the "Heroes" montages (but definitely not the In Memoriam section), and just watch the awards and Ellen's bits.  I thought it was a pretty innocuous affair this year, and I did like the big selfie she took with Meryl et al. :D  Anyway, watched a 3 hour 40 mins programme in just under 2 hours, so not too bad at all. :)

The songs were terrible!  Especially U2's song for Mandela.   I'm glad they didn't win "just because they are U2", ya know?  I was a little surprised Sandra Bullock didn't get Best Actress for Gravity, after it seemed the darling of the Academy.  Glad to see 12 Years a Slave get attention and hardly anyone knew Brad Pitt was in it, credit to him for not showing off.

Got the results of my college assessment.  As I guessed, I scored high in reading comprehension (97%) but terrible in math- won't even give that score!  Sentence structure I didn't get so high in (80%), because I didn't really understand how they wanted the sentences completed at first.  Plus, everyone sorta has their own way of writing, so that was confusing.  I can take that one again though and I know I can do it better.  If not, I have to take TWO basic English courses until I can take some of the fun ones.  I can't wait to take the short story one offered!

Can you imagine how boring it is to be at the Oscars?  .. especially if you're not nominated or anything ... it takes ages apparently. Must be particularly awful for the women because everyone's obsessed with what they're wearing and if they get it wrong (or someone who thinks they are the last word in fashion says they've got it wrong) they're destined to see themselves .. in all the papers and the internet .. with a big cross next to them .. forever associated with 'the worst Oscar frocks'  :roll2:

Glad that 12 Years a Slave did well .. though I haven't seen it (but have seen some programmes about it.) I want to see it but then I don't .. not sure if I'm up to it

I'm cross stitching a pic for my Mum's 80th birthday .. just a little picture because she hasn't much wallspace but all the same .. I'm having to rush it as it needs to be finished by Thursday :blush2: Also got to make her a cake ... bit worried as not that good at cake decorating and particularly bad at writing with icing but need to write some sort of greeting on it so will just have to grin and bear it (or Mum will :D)

Spending the majority of the week with my grandchildren (three boys, ages 5, 4, and 2 and the baby girl, 1). Mommy and daddy hav appointments all this week. Unfortunately they drove off with carseats and shoes for the 4 year old. The two screaming demons-in-training are trying to out screech each other. Ugh. :o

The house is deteriorating at an alarming rate as I no longer have th energy to keep it and THEM clean. A cup of coffee would be wonderful but I no longer drink it so...a cuppa it is!

Tea is more soothing, anyway. (Says the woman finishing her third cup of coffee, ahem!)  It sounds like you really have your hands full!  Just think how peaceful your house will be next week - plenty of time for reading. ;) Stay strong!  Those adorable little munchkins can smell weakness.

Aww thanks! I wish I could be so optimistic! I swear they are everywhere. Its like they all have twins. Instead of 4 kids we have 8 and they are VERY vocal!!! Everything seems to revolve around the mouth and the butt, in one end and out the other and you had best be quick with the wipes, the diapers and the butt cream, thank you very much! :rolol:  But Lord knows they bring us hours of laughs. The hubby and I have tired to hide but ... they keep finding us. So, we just sit in stunned and numbed silence and practice keeping the reflects sharpened. The 2 year old and the one year old shoot for distance and you don't want to be in the way of a flying match box cars and blocks!

I'll just hose the house down over the weekend.

It's been a beautiful day here on Box Hill, which of course has brought the cyclists and day trippers out in their droves. Coran and I walked up the viewpoint with them late this morning and spent 4 hours sitting on one of the benches reading and watching the world go by.

It has been an interesting week for me what with starting the new job. This new place is still in social care, but rather than working with the elderly, it's a facility for disabled adults, where they are taught various life skills. I seem to be settling in well and making friends with staff and residents alike - the residents are a mixture of supported living and those with more specialist needs that are in the 17 bed care home that is on site - there are a lot with Downs and various types of autism. They teach them various life skills for independent living - namely IT, catering, textiles, horticulture and retail (selling the products made in the other categories). During this beautiful weather I have been making excuses to spend time outdoors in the horticulture unit. The staff can buy the fruit and veg that is grown there, and tonight we shall be sampling parsnips from the garden, which I am looking forward to.

Having a longer lunch hour also means I have a lot more time for reading, which has to be good. It is lovely though to have all my weekends free.

Took the kids to the beach yesterday.  It was a beautiful day, not too hot or too cold, and no wind.  I've been wanting to go to the beach all summer but whenever we had a free weekend I couldn't afford the petrol, and if I had money for petrol we were busy.  Yesterday the plans we originally had fell through so we finally got to go.  On the way home we discovered this second hand book shop in a village about 15 mins from our town.  Had a bit of a browse and bought one book.  Definitely intend to go back there when I've got more money.

Talisman, good luck with your new job! Sounds like you're enjoying it.

I'm absolutely shattered! I've spent the weekend in Plymouth for an applicant's day, where I got to know my course tutors, and already made friends with one of my future classmates. The tutors were all splendid, and you could tell that they all really care about the subject (environmental science) and the students. The course sounds brilliant- we even have a field trip to Malaysia in the second year! I can't wait to start, as I had an unconditional offer (already done my A levels) from them way back in October and I accepted it straight away, so I'm guarenteed a place. We stayed with some friends in a village about 20 minutes from Plymouth, so we also spent some time relaxing in the countryside.

Now I'm just having a quiet, lazy afternoon. I walked round to my grandparents' house this morning, and filled in some health and safety agreement forms because I'm due to start volunteering (as an education volunteer) at Howletts Wild Animal Park at the weekend. Now I'm just listening to some of my favourite music, and relaxing. I'm also going to finish brushing up on my knowledge about gorillas and Madagascan wildlife later when I'm feeling a bit more awake, and start applying for Plymouth accommodation tomorrow!

That course sounds fabulous, Tiger!  I did Environmental Science A level at evening classes a few years back and absolutely loved it - I wish there had been something like that when I was at school as I might have been more inclined to continue in further education if there had.

Spent nearly all weekend sewing for my quilting class on Wednesday and still haven't finished my block yet - not too much more to do, so hopefully I should finish it in time, but that will be my evening filled for tonight I suspect!

I'm with Chesilbeach on this one Tiger, the course does sound fabulous!

We had a lovely weekend, On Saturday we took a trip to Old Sarum in Wiltshire, where (according to the English Heritage site) the original Salisbury once stood. It is 2 miles north of where the city stands now. The mighty Iron Age hill fort was where the first cathedral once stood and the Romans, Normans and Saxons have all left their mark. We got up there early, spent time within the fort, and then spent over an hour walking around the 'rim' of the external moat. It was quite windy up on the hill, but the views are wonderful, and the day was bright. A coffee from their little shop and we headed off. We stopped for lunch outside Winchester, and then took a scenic meandering route home.

We are already making plans to spend time in Salisbury and Winchester in the near future.

Sunday was spent quietly, and today I was gardening for 5 hours. Right now I am achey and tired.
