Anna Begins Posted December 28, 2013 Share Posted December 28, 2013 That's pretty much my question. I am in love with them and was wondering if I need it. On one hand, its nice to have it all together in one device, but I have a Surface Tablet, so I don't think I can justify doing that. On the other, I kinda like having a separate kindle and a separate computer, especially because both are small and my tablet has a physical keyboard (that I love) Anyway, did anyone have a paperwhite and moved on to a Fire? I've tried reading on my tablet, but the light irritates my eyes, and I find I can't read on it for a long period of time. I spend hours everyday on my laptop as it is, so I feel like I need to give my eyes some rest. I find reading on a Paperwhite so much easier, and more relaxing on my eyes. Plus, if you already have a tablet and enjoy using it, I don't think you really need the Fire. Although I have never used either the Surface Tablet or the Fire, so my opinion comes from no experience whatsoever. If you are interested in getting a Fire, perhaps try it out in a shop and see what it's like? Maybe it's not as straining on the eyes as other tablets. julie Posted December 28, 2013 Share Posted December 28, 2013 Hi Anna I have a Fire and a Paperwhite ,and would recommend both for someone who is looking for different things ,as I'll explain below : The Paperwhite is hands down the best eReader I've owned. I've had a Sony, Kindle # 2, Kindle Keyyboard , now the Paperwhite. It is perfect - Size is wonderful, nice and light ,easy to hold and toss in your purse and read anyplace. It has the backlit screen so is great for reading in the dark . I'd not recommend the Fire to use mainly for reading,because : Way too heavy and clunky to hold for reading , you cannot see it at all to read out in the sunlight , it has a shiny surface so the glare factor also would be a hindrance . I DO like using it to look at pictures if I buy a book that has them because the pictures are nice and clear and colorful, so it's nice for that, It's terrific for watching videos ( I have the Prime, so watch lots of free tv shows on it ) .Also works well for the Web ,apps, etc . Been wanting an e-reader for ages but common sense (and lack-of finances!) prevailed! Not using it yet - but looking forward to it. (I'd never entirely desert traditional books, though.) I find it really difficult to read long sections of text from my laptop screen, but so many things seem to be only available digitally now, I usually end up printing loads of stuff out if I need to read it. But the paperwhite is a lot of money, especially considering I know I'll always want paper books if I can get them. I considered the kindle fire because I could do work from that too, it would feel like it was more worth the money... but I read it has exactly the same kind of backlit screen as a laptop, so I probably won't be able to read from that either. And I definitely can't afford both. Can somebody please just tell me there's an e-reader with paperwhite style screen and a notepad (or better yet Microsoft word) function that I have overlooked? I'm reading on my laptop as well and don't mind that, but I also have a kindle touch and that's looking nearly like a book.
