“Anybody can be charming if they don't mind faking it, saying all the stupid, obvious, nauseating things that a conscience keeps most people from saying. Happily, I don't have a conscience. I say them.”

Plans.

Having read too much in 2013, I Plan to read 3 books a month plus two in the readathon slot, but not necessarily being commented on. This should see me reading 60 books compared to 46 and 74 for previous years.

Looks like that plan is out of the window, with me reading short Sci-fi.

The Black Box - Michael Connelly, 407 pages 6th-11th

It does as some people say, have a too predictable storyline and I think it is a really weak effort. 2. After reading this and the drop recently, I think I'll leave reading any more Connelly for a while.

1hr P.207

Mega-star Robert Chase is famous for losing himself in his characters. When he and a group of actors descend on the Miami Police Department for 'research', Chase becomes fixated on Dexter Morgan, the blood-spatter analyst with a sweet tooth for doughnuts and a seemingly average life.

To perfect his role, Chase is obsessed with shadowing Dexter's every move and what really makes him tick. There is just one problem... Dexter's favourite hobby involves hunting down the worst killers to escape legal justice, and introducing them to his special brand of playtime.

It's a secret best kept out of the spotlight and away from the prying eyes of bloated Hollywood egos if Dexter wants to stay out of the electric chair. The last thing he needs is bright lights and the paparazzi... but even Dexter isn't immune to the call of fame.

I enjoyed the first part of the book, but there was nothing new and he just recycled ideas.

I thought the main plot of the story was enjoyable to read, but Horowitz kept mentioning other story titles from A.C.D.
I kept tripping over them. He even managed to call a character Sally and have her eat in a restaurant called Lockhart's.
Conan Doyle had fun making up the names of mysterious cases that never got written about, and that's funny. Trying to get every title or case mentioned in the book and trying to force every possible character into it as well isn't.

I'm giving it 3*s for the plot and 2*s for the execution.

The games Afoot...

It is November 1890 and London is gripped by a merciless winter. Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are enjoying tea by the fire when an agitated gentleman arrives unannounced at 221B Baker Street. he begs Holmes for help, telling the unnerving story of a scar faced man with piercing eyes who has stalked him in recent weeks.
Intrigued, Holmes and Watson find themselves swiftly drawn into a series of puzzling and sinister events, stretching from the gas-lit streets of London to the teaming criminal underworld of Boston and the mysterious 'House of Silk'...

It's a cross between The Adventure of The Dancing Men and everybody's best bits, e.g The Irregulars appearance in The Sign of Four, Jeremy Brett tv series

It's also reminding me of quintin jardine's fatal last words, by mentioning story titles and characters from his other books.

It was an author discussion on gr to promote his new book, Stay Alive. If I'd spotted it sooner, I might have been in time to request a copy. Simon kept popping back onto the thread, throughout the day.

Hi Jack, to be honest, I've always thought of the 2nd person narrative you describe as 1st person. I tend to write in whatever person/tense suits the books. Other people who do this include Harlan Coben, Don Winslow and Michael Connelly- all great authors.

And this was a slightly better one:-

Hi Jack

I try to write every weekday, morning and afternoon, when I'm working on a book, and funnily enough I actually listen to music while I write. I particularly enjoy jazz and chillout music when I'm working. Favourites are Miles Davis for the jazz, and Zero 7 for the chillout. Simon

Pig Island - Mo Hayder 494 Pages, Hopefully Poppet should be out soon. 16th- 22nd

See Evil
Journalist Joe Oakes makes a living exposing supernatural hoaxes. But what he sees when he visits a secretive religious community on a remote scottish island forces him to question every thing he thought he knew.

Hear Evil
Why have the islanders been accused of Satanism? What has happened to their leader? And why will no one discuss the strange creature seen wandering the lonely beaches of Pig Island?

Read Evil
In Pig Island, Mo Hayder dares you to face your fears head on and to look at what lurks beneath the surface of everyday normality. It's about the unspeakable things people do to each other.

It had quite an amusing start, Introducing Joe Oakes, but had settled down to being a strange tale at the moment.
P 150 to 163, After all the build up, It seems to have happened in these pages.
P 236, So after an atmospheric build-up, it seems to be building to either dramatic or anti- climax .

Well I'm not sure how I felt about Pig Island, I disagree with the quote on the cover "The most terrifying thriller you'll read all year" Karin Slaughter, but it was a good ending when it finally arrived. It wasn't a fast paced read and it was just strange rather than terrifying.

The Crucifix Killer - Chris Carter, 434 Pages 22nd-

In a derelict cottage in LA, a young woman is found savagely murdered. Naked, strung from two wooden posts, the skin has been ripped from her face - while she was still alive. On the nape of her neck is carved a strange double cross: the sinature of a psychopath known as the Crucifix Killer.

But that's not possible. Because, two years ago, the Crucifix Killer was caught and executed. Could this be the work of a copycat? Or is Detective Robert Hunter forced to face the unthinkable? Is the real Crucifix Killer still out there, taunting Hunter with his inability to catch him?

Robert Hunter and his rookie partner are about to enter a nightmare beyond imagining...

The fast start has been let down, by a slow progression of the case. I've got to P.187. The tension is building quite nicely at the moment, I have a couple of ideas about the story, but am hopefully wrong. P.359 It's Not an especially fast read and I am finding it easy to put down at the moment.

It was just a shame I spotted the killer early on.

I read the Crucifix Killer last year and found it reasonably enjoyable. I did feel that there was a lot if unnecessary back story added to the characters that was done in a rather clunky way. Will be interested to hear how you get on with it.

I've got to Page 259, just about to start chapter 41 and I agree. You've got the reference to a previous case where hunter turned out to be correct and CC also raises the possibility of this one having been solved wrong as well. There's also that going back in time trick, that I'm such a fan of! I'm determined to read it this time though. Edited by dex

There's another Author Discussion on Goodreads on Wednesday 5th March.

This one featuring Richard Montanari and Tess Gerritsen.

Although I have read some Tess Gerritsen books, I will be asking Richard Montanari some questions.

Hi Jack. The two series are similar in more ways than they are different, I think. Both Cleveland and Philadelphia are older American cities, both have a diverse citizenry, a developed waterfront (Lake Erie in Cleveland, the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers in Philly), as well as a police force more than a century old. Where Detective Jack Paris works alone, for the most part, Detectives Kevin Byrne and Jessica Balzano work together, though, on neither force, is working homicides with a partner mandatory. The main difference is that Philadelphia is a much broader canvas.

As to routine, I always begin with my villain’s pathology, then work outward from that point. As a writer of police procedurals, I know that there is a certain order in which some things must unfold, and that gives the early part of the story an innate structure. After that is established, my characters—both good and bad – tend to tear the story from my hands and take over.

I would love my detectives to team up with Clarice Starling, if she’s still on the job.

Ratking - Michael Dibdin 445 Pages, 21st Page 40, Page 152

A powerful industrialist, Ruggiero Miletti, is kidnapped. Inspector Zen is transferred to Perugia to take over the case - but find that there are many obstacles in his way. The local authorities see him as an interloper, and the victim's family, one of the most powerful in Italy, seem content to let Miletti languish in the hands of his abductors.

This book had a slow start and their were a lot of cliched points about zen, like being on suspension. It got better, but I didn't enjoy it that much.
