Looking for a crime thriller about a dangerous drifter.

I'm trying to get some help finding a crime thriller. About 18 years ago I started reading this book about a very dangerous drifter who gets invited into a home to replenish his water I think, only to shoot the husband and then rape the wife who he shoots also subsequently. The wife dies but somehow the husband survives even though he was shot in the head. Once he recovers he starts tracking down the killer. The police also gets involved at a certain point. The story takes a turn for the worse when the criminal blows up a passenger plane. This is pretty much all I remember. The story took place in the US and the author was probably American but I don't remember his name or the title of the book. I had to return the book before finishing it and then I forgot about it. Recently something reminded me of it. Does anybody recognize any of this? Thanks a lot!
