frankie
I've hesitated to start a thread on Sofi Oksanen because it's been a few years since I've read her latest novel, Purge. I know a few members on here have read the book and enjoyed it, so I thought it was time Oksanen had her own thread on here. Personally I think she is one of the finest authors in Finland. She has written four novels to date, and I've read three of them so far. I liked her first novel, thought the next one was better, and the third novel, Purge, was amazing! I think she's definitely an author to look out for... Purge was initially a play by Oksanen, which she then adapted to a novel. And I know the play has been done in the USA, for example. It's been quite a success story for a Finnish author. Here is something on Purge from Amazon: An international sensation, Sofi Oksanen’s award-winning novel Purge is a breathtakingly suspenseful tale of two women dogged by their own shameful pasts and the dark, unspoken history that binds them. When Aliide Truu, an older woman living alone in the Estonian countryside, finds a disheveled girl huddled in her front yard, she suppresses her misgivings and offers her shelter. [...]Sofi Oksanen establishes herself as one the most important voices of her generation with this intricately woven tale, whose stakes are almost unbearably high from the first page to the last. Purge is a fiercely compelling and damning novel about the corrosive effects of shame, and of life in a time and place where to survive is to be implicated. Oksanen has roots in Estonia, which is why she writes about the Estonian history... But she's a born and bred Finn, and I am personally proud to have her in the Finnish literary canon.
