Katrina1968
Hi all! Was wondering if anyone has read this book yet? I have it on my bookshelf and its really tempting me to put down the tomb (Mists of Avalon) and delve into a delicious dish! Synopsis Julie & Julia is the story of Julie Powell's attempt to revitalize her marriage, restore her ambition, and save her soul by cooking all 524 recipes in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume I, in a period of 365 days. The result is a masterful medley of Bridget Jones' Diary meets Like Water for Chocolate, mixed with a healthy dose of original wit, warmth, and inspiration that sets this memoir apart from most tales of personal redemption. When we first meet Julie, she's a frustrated temp-to-perm secretary who slaves away at a thankless job, only to return to an equally demoralizing apartment in the outer boroughs of Manhattan each evening. At the urging of Eric, her devoted and slightly geeky husband, she decides to start a blog that will chronicle what she dubs the "Julie/Julia Project." What follows is a year of butter-drenched meals that will both necessitate the wearing of an unbearably uncomfortable girdle on the hottest night of the year, as well as the realization that life is what you make of it and joy is not as impossible a quest as it may seem, even when it's -10 degrees out and your pipes are frozen. Powell is a natural when it comes to connecting with her readers, which is probably why her blog generated so much buzz, both from readers and media alike. And while her self-deprecating sense of humor can sometimes dissolve into whininess, she never really loses her edge, or her sense of purpose. Even on day 365, she's working her way through Mayonnaise Collee and ending the evening "back exactly where we started--just Eric and me, three cats and Buffy...sitting on a couch in the outer boroughs, eating, with Julia chortling alongside us...." Inspired and encouraging, Julie and Julia is a unique opportunity to join one woman's attempt to change her life, and have a laugh, or ten, along the way. --Gisele Toueg

page turner
was hoping someone has read The mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley or any of the other Avalon books in the series to give me a better insight to them. I picked up The mists today and ummed and ahhed over it - mean I love anything Arthurian so I'll like it right?
Fi.
I love The Mists Of Avalon, it's one I reread regularly. The other books are great too but I don't know about the last one published this year, The Sword Of Avalon I'm a huge Arthurian fan so a definite thumbs up! page turner
Thanks that's all the reassurance I need - one thumbs up from this forum and it's good to go - I never bought so many books in so little time as I have since joining this forum! chesilbeach
Hmmm ... I'm in two minds about this. It was commissioned after being based on a blog if I remember rightly, and was one of those books that got a lot of publicity before being published for that reason. It's now also a film, which I must admit I'm tempted to see, if only because Meryl Streep is in it. Potentially interesting story, and curiosity about the route to publication might tempt me to read it, so I'd be keen to hear your thoughts on it after you've read it. Stephanie2008
I didn't realise it was a book but I want to see the film just because Meryl Streep is in it The premise does seem intereresting though so I will be on the look out for the book

Katrina1968
Scarletbella, I have the book and have been reading it last week. I adore this book! I've found myself reading the book and watching the movie at the same time. No kidding. Of course, as great as the movie is, there are sections in the book that are really intense, moving and a little unsettling, but I couldnt put it down. This movies has caused our bookstore to have to increase our selection of cookbooks. Seems that Julia Childs life has caused a resurgence and revival in the kitchen. We are constantly special ordering her cookbooks. Edited September 18, 2009 by Echo double post

Fi.
has anyone read the Shadowmancer by G.P Taylor? the title caught my eye today There was a lot of fuss over this book when it first came out. The chap is/was a vicar and he was being touted as the next J K Rowling - I've read this one & also Wormwood by him and I wasn't that impressed by either of them. I thought the writing was quite stuffy and it certainly didn't read as well as a Rowling book, JMHO though

Fi.
Has anyone read Mirrorscape? I have it as an audio download, and I'm having trouble getting into it.. I wondered if it was worth persevering with. I bought this for my 16yo niece who said "I liked it but it wasn't brilliant" and asked me to buy the next book Mirrorstorm She's going to lend Mirrorscape to me next time she's home from school. Mia
has anyone read the Shadowmancer by G.P Taylor? the title caught my eye today Yes, it was okay... But it didn't make me want to read any more books by him. I remember finding some parts rather nasty too (but I am a sensitive little soul).
