Book Storage

Recommended Posts

Where and how do you keep your books? Not always a straightforward question or answer to this one.

I've already got several spots around home for my favourite friends - one actual packed bookcase, displayed on top of the wardrobe, on top of a cabinet in the living room - and inside the same cabinet too.

Also for a while my surplus has been catalogued and stowed in two plastic boxes outside, much to my annoyance.

But today - I spotted a good quality oak bookcase of generous proportions in a local charity shop, and plunged! It's being delivered in a few days, and I'm already planning it's home, and looking forward to unpacking my "outside" books again.  I hated not having them around me.

Small pleasures ...  but don't we enjoy them?

Where has your imagination prompted you to store your actual book-books, when pressed?

The physical books that I am reading and stored on my bedside table in one pile. We store all the books that we've absolutely loved and want to keep in the "cupboard under the stairs" as my Mum calls it (even though we have no stairs or second floor!). And then I've got some on my Kobo so no space used up there.

Most of my books are in my room/rooms, in several book cases and shelves. Some of my books, particularly my children's books and some YA, are upstairs, at the attic in boxes.

When I have my own house, in some years, I hope to have one room with all my books nicely displayed in book cases, but I don't know if that'll be possible tbh.

I have my books in bookcases, on shelves, piled high in the bedroom and a corner of the sitting room, cooking ones are obviously in the kitchen, and sadly some did not make it into the house and are hanging out in the loft at the moment,

Hopefully I can eventually get a 3 bedroom house with my partner so that we can have one room dedicated to just the books, We are both eager readers (and hoarders of books) and they do deserve a room all to the selves!

In the front room we have Billy bookcases from Ikea, when i filled them i started an overflow pile up the side of the bookcase which had to be moved & put in a big plastic box which i've jammed under a side table. I've also got boxes of books under mine & the children's beds & have now got a pile of books stacked on the speaker at the side of the sofa where i sit  :blush2:  Ideally i would like a summerhouse at the end of the garden with book lined shelves which i could escape to & read my books in peace. Bit of a lottery dream really

Usually the one I'm reading is in the kitchen (unless I'm reading it of course!). I have 2 white Billy bookcases in my room just for my books (one is full and the other is getting there!). Have a few spotted around the house too. We have 2 bookcases in the living room, 2 in the dining room, 2 and some shelves in my sister's room, one in my parent's room, and one on the landing. The landing one if the other main one where I keep my books.

Honestly pretty much anywhere I have a flat surface has a book on it, haha. On top of my TV with my DVDs, my nightstand, my dresser, my vanity, inside my closet on the shoe shelves, three mounted shelves in my room, my knick-knack shelf, in various piles around my room on the floor, on my art desk, coffee table in front of the TV....I could go on, but I'll stop. Strangely enough I actually know what books are in each of these places. Can't remember what I was doing 10 minutes ago, but I can remember that, haha! Quite bookish.

Thanks for your responses fellow booknutts - and keep them coming

It's fascinating to find out how we all deal with this "problem" we love having, and I bet this has reminded some of you that there are a few friends stored somewhere that you'd like to  :readingtwo:  again.

Getting quite excited about my impending new bookcase, now (due Wednesday) - I've even vac'd the spot it'll fit into(!) and am having fun deciding which of my treasures will go into it.

Theres's something so calming about planning the inside of a bookcase, isn't there?

I agree! It's so nice to do that. I'm hoping to get another book case too in a while, it'll be fun!

I have two large bookcases in my small 1 bedroom flat, there is no more room for books so the rest are kept at my parents. Some in my old room, some in the loft and the rest in my sister's room (my sister never reads, so just using some of her room as storage, hehe) :)

Hi gang -

My new possession is here, newly polished and packed, and in a place where I can admire it and contents, while I post

It's also freed-up my old smaller bookcase which now lives in a new home in my bedroom, holding a variety of old friends which I plan to get back to over the next year. I've never had a proper home for my books in the  bedroom before, so there's something very pleasing about that.

Have a great :readingtwo:  weekend, All.

P. S.  Did you buy or borrow at least one book yesterday, World Book Day? I bought two Georgette Heyers in our local Works   . There's still time to treat yourself to something new, y'know!

Congratulations on your new bookcase set up!

It's so much fun setting them up. /sigh/ :readingtwo:

I had one come in the mail, if that counts! :D

I live in a very small flat, within which I have doubly stacked two of the very large IKEA bookshelves.  There are then over 500 books in my old bedroom at my parents' house, a number more in two bookshelves that they have.  I also have around 30 out on loan at the moment to various friends which is good in a way, as I don't know where would put them otherwise.

I don't really read electronically, however am trying to more.  Have respect for those who can read that way rather than snobbery lol.  I have Candide on my phone at the moment with the Mayor of Casterbridge.  On my Ipad I have a few books on spiritualism and on my PC a few reference books for courses I have taken.

Gosh, Peahen, I'm impressed! That's a private lending-library you have going there, not to mention keeping the faith for books in all forms.

One thing worries me a bit - you do have those bookcases fixed to the wall, don't you?

I used to have a large bookcase, too - but it tipped forward several times, despite the fact that I packed the bottom shelves with really heavy books, (and not counting the occasions my two year old niece, or my cat, tried to clmb up it!)  So eventually I exchanged it for a lower one, plus my imagination in finding the surplus books new locations.

.

Apart from anything else - it saves the chore of picking up and re-stowing time and again.

Keep the faith fellow Nutts ....

Just a note regarding bookcases tipping over.....I have put shims http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shim_(spacer)  under the front of some of our bookcases.  That way they are even, or tilted back towards the wall.  They've been that way for some years now, with no problem.  Of course I don't have a 2 year old clombing either!  And our cats don't seem to care about climbing on them.

They do get in the bottom sometimes though and peek out at us. lol

Storage of books is always an ongoing problem here. I am a book lover. I am A book hoarder. I find it hard to part with my friends. I have most pb books stacked (laying down) in columns/rows towards the back of the shelve. Then I place the hb books neatly in the front. It saves lots of space for my ever increasing hoard. I've over 1000 (i know, I know....) books on my shelves. Lots of them have been read. But, not all of them. I have no shame in this. I figure I may never read all of them. However, I have them there for when they beacon to me and entice me to read them. My shelves are mostly in an upstairs hobby room. I have other book shelves in a former child's room with lots of their books still. Eventually they shall be split up amongst my children for their children to read. Leaving me with more space for my precious books. hehe.

Have just found a use for the space between the side of my bookcase and the wall - 3 large hardback Juliet Marilliers fit vertically  in there very nicely. :D

Now why didn't I think of that before? I used to store books in a similar way between the side of my wardrobe and the wall, too.

Pity that space is taken up with other things, now..

Happy reading, All.

I hope that this is allowed. I found a wonderful blog for all of us book hoarders. It's Bookshelfporn dot com. Lovely ideas on storing your beloved books.
