*Dives for a cookie* Om nom :)

I love how you know what books you got in which year! If I did that, I'd probably make better progress in reading them, because I buy small mountains and then forget all about them! There are a lot of intriguing titles I'm not familiar with, I'll have to have a proper look through them later. Happy reading in 2013! :D

Thanks, Noll. :) I bought quite a few books back when my mother-in-law died - some of these I'd not heard of, and others I would never have bought, so I might find they're rubbish when I get to them! :giggle2:

I am also impressed by the way you can recall what year you got what books. I can normally remember where I got a book but rarely when.

Thanks, Brian. :) I've been keeping a note of books purchased since 2011, otherwise I wouldn't have a clue when I bought them. :)

Thanks, Andrea. :) Noll bought me The Séance (from my wish list) for Christmas so I will read it fairly soon.

I've never thought of noting down when i bought a book but it's a really good idea, some of my books i know i've had for years but always seem to choose others ahead of them poor things :cray:

I hope you enjoy Far From The Madding Crowd Thomas Hardy it's one of my favourites of his but i didn't like Tess of the D'urbevilles.I like the sound of Journals Of A Somerset Rector did someone recommend it to you or did you pick it up on a whim ?

Best of luck with all your reading challenges in 2013 Janet :friends3:

Best of luck with all your reading challenges in 2013 Janet :friends3:

Many thanks. :) I started keeping a spreadsheet of books bought, and another for books read when I joined here in 2006 and they've evolved over the years to include lots of information.

I'm reading 'Tess' at the moment. I'm just under a third of the way through it and am enjoying it so far! You're the second person (the first being frankie) who didn't enjoy it though!

The Diary of a Somerset Rector had been on my Wish List for years after I came across it on a genealogy forum. Long story, but my maiden name was Moon. I was born and grew up in Kent, and moved to Somerset when I got married. Moon is a name which is very common here, and I'd often joked that I might be related to people here. Fast forward about 18 years and I started doing my family tree online. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that my g-g-Grandad and my g-g-Grandmother were both born within four miles of where I live now! :o I've since discovered that a few generations before that are local to here too!

Anyway, to cut a very long story short, I was going through my parents-in-law's books in 2011 (after they'd both died), and I found this book in amongst my father-in-law's books - he was a priest so I guess he got it for the 'Rectorish' element of it. I don't know if he ever read it, but it's special to me because it belonged to him. Despite Peter living here from the age of 14, we grew up in the same village in Kent and have known each other all our lives - and therefore I'd known his Mum and Dad since I was born. :)

It's very comfy in here and there are cookies, I know I will be back often :D

Happy Reading in 2013 Janet You have some great books on your TBR .. shouldn't be too much trouble should it? ;)

Thanks Kay. I'm hoping not! I guess it depends on how many new books I buy! :giggle2:

I loved The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. It was a great family-history mystery. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it.

Thanks. :) I've just remembered that I downloaded it on Kindle when it was on offer, so that will make it easier to read!

Eowyn Ivey The Snow Child

Amazing book, I don't know anyone who hasn't liked this.

Thomas Hardy Tess of the D'Urbervilles

I remember enjoying this whilst at college but can't remember a thing about it, maybe I should download it free onto my Kobo...

Steig Larsson The Girl Who Kicked a Hornet's Nest

Have you read the first two Janet? I have and enjoyed them but I haven't conjured the energy to read the third yet, maybe this year!

Kate Morton The Forgotten Garden

Excellent read, as was The House at Riverton, but The Distant Hours was a bit bleurgh, undecided at the mo whether to try her latest..

Sebastian Faulks On Green Dolphin Street

Have you read any other Faulks? If not please don't start with this one! (Try Birdsong or Human Traces..)

William Golding The Lord of the Flies

My son loved this when he read it for school last term, I cannot agree with him. i thought there was a gender divide with this book until I saw Andrea liked it so maybe not..

Have a fantastic 2013 Janet!! :readingtwo:

I tentatively started this just before Christmas, but stopped because I didn't want any distractions (I wasn't very far in) - I must pick it up soon. :)

The advantage of freebies is that if you do find you don't like it you can give up on it without feeling guilty! :D That said, I hope you do enjoy it if you try it again.

I have read the first two. Like you, for some reason #3 has been a bit of a stumbling block. I've seen the first (Swedish, with subtitles) film and would like to see 2 and 3. They showed them on TV this year, but they were too late for me!

I loved The House at Riverton so I have high hopes for this. :) Thanks for the warning re: The Distant Hours. :)

Sebastian Faulks On Green Dolphin Street

I've read (and loved) Birdsong - and also Engleby. :) I take it OGDS isn't as good as Birdsong?

William Golding The Lord of the Flies

My son loved this when he read it for school last term, I cannot agree with him. i thought there was a gender divide with this book until I saw Andrea liked it so maybe not..

My Mum gave it to me - she said she enjoyed it, but I've been putting it off as I know it's not necessarily an easy or enjoyable read.

Thanks - you too.

Definitely one to savour!

I've heard very mixed reviews of the films so I think I'll stick to the books for now!

I didn't think so but then I couldn't get into Engleby so maybe you'll like it..I didn't like Charlotte Gray but I did like Girl at the Lion D'Or and of course Human Traces is my favourite.

Nope, nothing easy or enjoyable about it at all, but you may think differently..

I first read this as a young teenager, and absolutely hated it. I finally came back to it two years ago (in my fifties), and really 'enjoyed' it. It's slim, quick, but very demanding in its intensity: unremitting is the word that jumps to mind. I put enjoy in inverted commas because it's not so much one that I got a huge amount of pleasure from, but i am very glad to have read it again as an adult, asking me lots of questions and making me think. The mistake my teacher made was that because it was about children, he thought it was for children. It isn't, and it hit me very much on the raw when I read it as such (that's not to say that some children can't handle it - I just wasn't ready for it). It is superbly written (having just read The Spire I'm starting to think that Golding is a writer I probably admire, but whether I like is less certain).

I must admit I know very little about William Golding - Lord of the Flies is the only one of his I've heard of. :)

Maybe one day, but certainly no time soon... :D

You are very brave Janet, to have a total amount spent on books aspect to your lists. I would cry if I totted up everything I spent on books in a year!!

I have to admit that Lord of the Flies is one of my absolute book hates. I'm pretty sure it stems mostly from reading it in high school but I certainly won't be returning to it any time soon to see if I have changed my mind. (Also, the film version makes me shudder just thinking about it!) I do love it though, when people read it and rave about it! I'm always surprised when people get different things from the same book.

Happy reading!!

I keep a note of what I'm spending on books in an effort to dissuade me from spending too much money! :giggle2:

I haven't seen the film of The Lord of the Flies. I don't really know much about it at all, apart from the basic premise of it. I will have to push it up my reading pile as it's definitely one of those books that divides opinions such a lot, like The Catcher in the Rye, which I loathed!

Thanks, Kat. :)
