Coffee and Hot Chocolate Machine?

Hi,

Does anyone own one of these and are they any good?

We are trying to find one that makes coffee and hot chocolate, but can only find one (Bosch/Tassimo Beverage Maker) that seems to do both. Do all coffee machines make hot chocolate, or do we need to find one that specifically states it does so? It's doing my head in reading up on reviews. There are so many, and they aren't cheap. :thud: Who knew there was so much to know about coffee. All we drink here is instant from a jar, so it all seems a bit confusing! :dunno:

I'm not sure if these are sold where you live, Bobblybear, but I have a Keurig machine for my coffee. It makes one cup of coffee at a time and you buy these things called K-Cups, which are disposable single servings of coffee. As far as I know they also have cups for hot chocolate and tea as well.

I LOVE mine, though - can't say enough good things about it! I tried looking it up at Amazon.uk and it only listed one major kind, otherwise there are the Bosch brands. Good luck :D.

It depends how much you want to pay and whether you are happy to make the coffee or hot chocolate from scratch or whether you prefer to use capsules.

We've had a couple of different coffee machines at work over the last few years.

Dolce Gusto machines are generally on the cheaper end of the spectrum but you are tied to Nescafé Dolce Gusto pods. The coffee isn't too bad, but it's nothing to write home about. I've been told the hot chocolate pods they do are quite nice but I've never tried them myself. We ended up binning our machine though (the second of two we bought) because it leaked water everywhere (which is the same fault the first one developed).

We currently have a Nespresso machine, which has been a lot more reliable and the coffee is pretty good, but neither the machine or the capsules are cheap! (It’s best to get the capsules directly from Nespresso themselves as they are about half the price you will pay on Amazon etc.

Personally, I have a stove top Bialetti Moka Express Espresso Maker. You just load cold water and ground coffee in the base and put it on the stove (you have to watch it though as you need to remove it from the heat as soon as it has boiled). It makes great coffee (provided you buy decent coffee to put in it in the first place!) and it’s cheap as well.

The down side, from your point of view, is that it doesn't do hot chocolate, but I have a kettle/microwave for that!

Thanks for the replies. There are too many choices out there. :thud: I would prefer to not use the pods/capsules as they are quite expensive.

That Bialetti Moka Express Espresso Maker is interesting; I've seen them around but not really known how they were used. I'm not a major coffee drinker (unless it's decaf :hide: ), so it's more the hot chocolate for me, and coffee for hubby.

I've spoken to people at work and it seems like everyone has at some point owned one, but stopped using it when the novelty wore off, and they only drag it out when guests arrive.

I'm leaning towards a Bosch one, but it uses capsules. However I don't think we would use it for every cup of coffee/chocolate. It would be more of a treat. Maybe. Decisions decisions.

  • 1 year later...

Just another thought...the capsule machines also have refillable pods available.  I find it to be much more affordable on a daily basis and I can fill it with loose tea.leaves as well.  I buy the pre-filled ones when I catch a sale and then drink them for a treat.  I also find the machine very handy for hot water to use with tea bags and other instant drinks.

My dad was given a coffee machine for his birthday. I don't like coffee but I like a hot chocolate now and then (I only started liking them when I was on a delayed plane and everyone could have free coffee, tea or hot chocolate and since I don't like the first two I picked hot chocolate, I was quite hungry because of the delay). Our machine makes it so nicely that I don't like the hot chocolate much in certain other places anymore :giggle2: (like the university where I used to study).
