  1. I've read a couple of Rutherfurd's books, Paris and New York. i should read more of them. Even though I know he's a very good writer I still get put off by the size of his books.
  2. I didn't really like Girl on the Train. I know its got mixed reviews, people either love it or really hate it.
  3. I figured out Gone Girl really early on in the book, so for me it was a bit predictable. But everyone has different tastes in books, which is good. It'd be boring if we all liked the same things.
  4. I love the Ann Cleeves books, and just started watching the Shetland series. I would love to go to Shetland one day, especially since my family are originally from Scotland, but since I live in New Zealand, it's very expensive from here. Maybe one day I'll win the lottery.
  5. The Couple Next Door wasn't a fun read. I only kept reading because I thought there was no way it could be so predictable. I was waiting for a big surprise twist. I have to stop doing that. I did the same thing with Gone Girl and regretted it too.
  6. I read a Shari Lapena novel recently Karen, The Couple Next Door, which I think is her fourth book. It too, had a few problems with it that made it seem like a very amateur first novel. It was very predictable, the characters were very stereotyped, and it was easy to figure out the ending after only less than a quarter of the book. I was thinking about whether to try another of her books, but after reading your review I don't think I'll bother.
  7. Finished Death in a Strange Country by Donna Leon.
  8. I'm the same as Hayley. I prefer to have things on paper. They just seem more important or something that way. I have notebooks everywhere. I've just started researching a book and I could put everything on computer, but it doesn't feel like I've done anything if it's not on paper. Edited to add: At work I'm a typist. I type doctors letters, print them and send them out. Even though they typing on to computer is the biggest part of it, I don't feel I've done any work if I don't have paper copies of letters on my desk waiting to be sent.
  9. Finished The Concrete Blonde by Michael Connelly and almost finished Black as he's Painted by Ngaio Marsh.
  10. Just finished The Concrete Blonde by Michael Connelly.
  11. Just about finished another Ngaio Marsh - False Scent
  12. I finished My Brothers Keeper by Donna Malane. This is the second book in a crime series set in Wellington, NZ, It's been good to read something with places I recognise. I haven't read a lot of NZ books and I should really read more. I'm currently reading The Girl in the Woods by Camilla Lackberg but I'm not sure if I'll continue. I've found this series got a bit samey as it went on.
  13. I've recently finished A Small Weeping by Alex Gray and Phantom by Jo Nesbo. I should finish Off With His Head by Ngaio Marsh today. I also finished a non-fiction book, part of my collection of biographies of New Zealand prime ministers that I'm slowly working my way through.
  14. Unseasonably warm. It's winter here now, and I'm sitting in short sleeves. Now I've said that it'll probably be freezing all weekend.
  15. I've read the first of the Cicero series and really enjoyed that. They're the only two of his I've read so far. Really looking forward to reading more of books.
  16. I loved Munich. It was the first Robert Harris I read and now he's one of my favourite authors.
  17. Winter's here. It's been really cold the last couple of days, and yesterday and Sunday rainy and windy as well. I'm currently sitting in my office at work with a blanket around my knees because even with the heaters one it's still freezing.
  18. Just about finished Daniel by Henning Mankell. Not sure what I think about this one. The writing is just as good as Mankell always is, not sure about the actual storyline. Since I was so close to finishing I bought Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter to work today and started that. So far not liking it as much as others of hers.
  19. Another fan of the Shetland books here. You've given me a couple of new authors to add to my list of detective series too. Always looking for new authors to check out.
  20. Just finished Frenchman's Creek by Daphne Du Maurier and now partway through Extraordinary People by Peter May.
  21. "What he remembered most was her perfume". The Gallows Bird by Camilla Lackberg
  22. I've read some Jonathan Kellerman. He's written a lot. I haven't read anything by any of the other Kellerman's. Another good crime author I'm reading at the moment is Linda Fairstein. Hers are set in New York.
  23. Freda our charity shops charge ridiculous prices for second hand books. I also don't really get time to go in them, as they're only open at the same times that I work. I'm also on an extremely low wage, so even charity prices are too much. I'll get them from the library eventually. Just glad our library is still free and does have a very good selection. Some libraries in NZ have started to charge for borrowing!!
  24. I think you'd like Val Mcdermid Frankie. I've read one Jeffrey Deaver, but his books never seem to be in at my library. I do want to read more of his.
