  1. Finished The Polish Detective by Hania Allen. Really enjoyed this, although the ending was a little bit weak.
  2. I bought Stasiland recently. I've read a few books set in this era and I'm really looking forward to this one. More so after your review.
  3. I love the Brunetti series too Madeleine, although I'm only up to book 3.
  4. Currently reading And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini. His books are amazing. It makes me want to reread A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Kiterunner again.
  5. Finished The Marco Effect by Jussi Adler-Olsen. Just about finished The Scent of Death by Simon Beckett.
  6. I finished Fatherland by Robert Harris today. Love his books. I'll probably start the Marco Effect by Jussi Adler-Olsen tonight. I'm also reading From the Cradle to the Grave: a biography of Michael Joseph Savage for some research I'm doing.
  7. I read the Kite Runner a few years ago and it has stayed with me since. It's such a good book. I've also read A Thousand Splendid Suns and that was just as good.
  8. I think I've got more introverted as I've got older. When I was younger I would be with groups of people a lot more, and not seem to mind. I didn't mind being alone, but didn't crave it as much as I do now. Now I find I really need to be alone a lot more, and really don't like being with large groups very much.
  9. That sort of workplace would drive me nuts Madeleine. I used to work in an open plan office, but only about 10-15 people max, but it was still sometimes too much interaction for me.
  10. I'm definitely an introvert. I much prefer time on my own than with others. Luckily my job is about 85% on my own in my own office, with minimal contact with others. That little contact I do have is just enough for me. Occasionally I cover reception, and after an hour or so of having that contact with other people I start to feel a little nuts, and need to be on my own again. My favourite time is the evening when I'm at home on my own reading. Now I live on my own it's even better.
  11. I think so too, Willoyd. The crowd numbers at events have dropped since these new regulations have come in, so it's backfired on them a bit. Edited to add: Not being able to take in even water is definitely a money thing. They charge way too much for drinks, including water, at their food stalls.
  12. Can only take empty bottles which can be filled at water fountains. Their rules are ridiculous even if you don't have health needs. Willoyd, I haven't been able to find salt tablets here and I don't know if he'd eat them. They should be a bit more flexible for health issues. He has type 1 diabetes (as well as other conditions) and they tell us he can just buy fizzy at their stalls if he needs sugar. Not always possible if you're in your seat and suddenly go low. Some of the foods they have are things like kebabs and wraps and Chinese food. They still sell fizzy drinks too.
  13. A healthy diet can mean different things to different people. Our local sports arena has recently implemented "healthy food" at their food stalls, and no outside food allowed. it really annoys me as due to health issues my son needs a high salt, high fat diet. Not what is usually considered "healthy". It now means we can't attend sports events as they won't allow anything outside in, even for health reasons, and it only takes an hour or so of inadequate sodium for him to become very ill. I really don't like when people try to push their idea of "healthy" on to others, whether that's low fat, paleo, low carbs or whatever else the latest fad diet is.
  14. I've read a couple of other Robert Harris books and really enjoyed them, so I'm looking forward to this. I've heard a lot about it. My library didn't have it initially so I put in a request for purchase and they got it pretty quick.
  15. I just finished Redemption by Jussi Adler-Olsen. Now reading Fatherland by Robert Harris.
  16. I have a list in a notebook and one on my phone. But I've only recently started keeping a list, so I'm not sure how good it is.
  17. I'll be adding some of these suggestions to my list, too. I enjoyed the Frost books a lot, and the programme with David Jason is good as well. I can't think of any authors at the moment like this series but I'll keep thinking.
  18. Just finished Enigma by Robert Harris.
  19. I'd do that with my toys too Hayley. I'd set up my books as a library and my toys would come and get the books out. In that way I guess books did influence me, as all my life I wanted to be a librarian.
  20. I don't know about influencing my personality. So much in my life has influenced that it would be hard to know what books played a part in. They have helped me to realise my introversion is okay and perfectly normal. They have influenced my interest in history. I love reading history books and learning about different places through those. I also have a dream to write a history of New Zealand prime ministers because of reading the biographies of leaders of other countries.
  21. I'm just about finished Dogs of Riga by Henning Mankell. I'm really enjoying this series. I'm also watching the TV series which is just as good as the books. Kenneth Branagh is fantastic as Wallender.
  22. Brian, I just found the TV series on DVD at my library, so I've started watching that now too. So excited to find my library has it.
  23. Finished Dead Water another in the Shetland series by Anne Cleeves. Now reading the second Kurt Wallendar, Dogs of Riga by Henning Mankell. Really enjoying this series.
  24. My library doesn't have kindle books, but they do have ebooks. They have two apps you can download, Libby and Borrowbox, and you can download ebooks onto them. The librarians have told me Amazon won't allow libraries to provide their books for free. Maybe your libraries have something similar?
  25. I've read nearly all the Shetland series and just recently started watching the TV series. The TV programmes are very different from the books, some of the events are in different places, and apart from the actual murders, sometimes it almost seems like a different series. I'm finding it a bit confusing sometimes. It is a good programme though, and it's nice to see the areas where it's set, so I'll keep watching.
