She is just brilliant. Time's Legacy is one of the greats.

A favourite of mine also. A splendid story teller.

Have this on my must-read list. Largely positive responses here, so looking forward to getting into it.

I read 'Makeda' over the holidays and wholeheartedly enjoyed it. It was written by the ex-wife of West Indian cricketer Sir Gary Sobers. Apparently she's a best-selling author, having published a couple of nutrition books a while back. Anyway, Makeda is of course historical fiction, based on the putative relationship between the Queen of Ethiopia and King Solomon. Brilliantly written, really, particularly for a first-time novelist. Plenty of romance, obviously, but it also features some pretty gritty sequences — slave uprisings, sexual assaults, etc. Anyone else read this? Haven't seen any reviews anywhere, other than those on Amazon.

This is one of my all time favourites. Mantel is a brilliant writer.

Agree with the original post — have learned my lesson the hard way! Thankfully, these days, having a Kindle makes it less of an issue.
