  1. 45cm of snow in one blizzard is not an every year occurrence for us, but it's certainly not rare. We usually get between 45-90 inches of snow in a season, which is 114-228cm. Plus I'm living temporarily in northern MN right now and they can sometimes get more than down in the cities. I know without a doubt that if I were one of my pioneering ancestors back in the 1800's I would have almost certainly died . I would highly recommend Fargo, Frankie, for a movie set in MN. Or any Joel and Ethan Coen film. While they're not all set in MN, the Coen bros. grew up not far from where I did and they are masters, imo. Also, there is a movie called Beautiful Girls which is one of my favorites. The movie is set in Massachusetts but was filmed in MN and captures it perfectly! I would also mention A Simple Plan, Untamed Heart, Juno, Purple Rain, and a guilty pleasure, Grumpy Old Men. That's interesting about the what 'Minne' and 'Sota' means in Finnish, I had no idea! We technically got the name from the Sioux Indians and it means 'sky-tinted water.' Lots of Sioux here at one time, and still many, many lakes Tonight we watched Eddie the Eagle and really enjoyed it!
  2. I watched the first one right away on Friday morning, and the other three episodes Friday night. I loved certain aspects of each episode, but I'm afraid that's all I can say for now...
  3. Hey there and welcome to BCF, Trevor! Glad to have you .
  4. Great news on the job front, Brian! I hope it continues. Congrats to your brother, Athena, and good luck vibes to you, Talisman, on your promotion. Happy Turkey Day tomorrow to my fellow American members . I hope you have a lovely one! It'll be just a small gathering here and I'm very much looking forward to some time off work.
  5. Well, yes, those qualities we have in abundance . But we don't all say "you betcha" and "oh, yaahh?" all the time Ugh, you can come take my place, Frankie, and I'll go somewhere warm. We have about 18" on the ground now (45cm) and I've already had enough! I need rescuing!
  6. As with any Hollywood-made film about Minnesota, Frankie, remember we're not ALL like that I haven't watched a film lately, but I did watch an episode of The West Wing last night and the latest episode of Westworld. Is anyone able to get that show elsewhere in the world yet? I love it and can't get enough!
  7. I love this topic and that so many of you want to re-read books! I find with several people I talk to in life that they never want to re-read something, and in fact get rid of a book they enjoyed once they've read it The horror! In a heartbeat I would re-read: The Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas The Shining - Stephen King Circle of Friends - Maeve Binchy A Tale of Two Cities - Charles Dickens How to Lose Friends and Alienate People - Toby Young Close to Shore - Michael Capuzzo Anne of Green Gables - L.M. Montgomery Jonathan Argyle Art Mystery series - Iain Pears Arcadia - Iain Pears The Instance of the Fingerpost - Iain Pears Julian Kestrel Mystery series - Kate Ross The Goldfinch - Donna Tartt The Historian - Elizabeth Kostova The Dante Club - Matthew Pearl Ordinary People - Judith Guest The Art Spirit - Robert Henri Animal Farm - George Orwell The Fountainhead - Ayn Rand Land of the Burnt Thigh - Edith Eudora Kohl I'm sure there's more but I'm still on my first cup of coffee...
  8. It's this time of year that I start daydreaming about the day I can move to the SE, Virginia! Just today I was looking up the income and property tax rates of NC, SC and VA! It's currently 41f here (5c) but this time tomorrow it will be 34 (1c) and we are forecast to be under 8-12" of snow But I won't complain, since come January I'll be longing for warm 30+ degree days...
  9. I like Anna Kendrick too, Chesil, but her character was really annoying for some reason. She was very erratic and hyper, almost. I should try and continue to watch it, maybe she'll grow on me. I love Mr. Blandings! And you can never go wrong with Cary Grant
  10. I saw the first 10 minutes of Mr. Right last night and that's about all I could stomach! I really like Sam Rockwell too, so I was disappointed I couldn't watch more. The night before that we watched the original Cheaper by the Dozen with Myrna Loy and Clifton Webb. I love that film and never get tired of watching it .
  11. I'm glad those of you in NZ are okay! Hopefully there's nothing to structurally serious, Bookmonkey. I hope you get more vacation days soon, Brian!
  12. Yayyy!!! Arcadia! Only one of my fave books . Can't wait to hear what you think of it when you get to read it! Thank you for those titles. I like anything really, including YA, supernatural and ones set in the UK
  13. Hey, Chrissy! I take it you are a Maureen Johnson fan Your reviews make me want to check her out. Is there some you'd recommend for a new reader of hers or a certain order that they're to be read?
  14. If you can make your way over here, Noll, it's only 3.3 c outside (38f)
  15. Much good speedy recovery vibes to Coran, Talisman! All my thanks and appreciation today go to veterans past, present and future, which includes my ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary, Civil, World and Korean wars. I have just shy of 1 month left at my current job so hopefully something will turn up sooner rather than later. It will be a strange observance of my 17th anniversary at the company knowing that the following day is my last. I have faith and am positive that things will turn out, though . I hope everyone has a lovely weekend.
  16. A friend loaned me her copy of In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume so I'm looking forward to starting it tonight.
  17. It's chilly, here, but not bad at all for an autumn day. I can't complain, I'm inside and get to look out my window at a bright blue sky, the lake and trees that are twice as tall as the house
  18. I hope you find something that makes you happy AND financially stable, Noll . To do what you truly love doing and get paid for it is a gift. For the last 17 years I've just had a 'job' rather than a fulfilling career and while it's great to be financially stable, am I really happy? These are the things I think about lately, especially now that I'm about to be laid off. My original end-date was 11 November and now I've been extended to 9 December because the transition to the outsourced company isn't going well. Surprise, surprise! I've been busy packing lately and will be moving on Halloween, so I won't be online for awhile until I get settled. I hope everyone has an excellent rest of October and if anyone has any spare positive vibes that you can send my way I would very much appreciate it!
  19. Yes, Minneapolis-St. Paul is right, Athena. I live in a suburb, probably about 15 minutes from downtown Mpls . Can I ask what brought you to live in the UAE, Kolinahr?
  20. Gas is about $2.15 average here, but that's much less than it was last year. Gas prices have been going down and have stayed low for awhile. It's good on one hand for our wallets but not so good for those workers in the oil/gas industry. My company has a division that works with these folks and we can definitely feel the hit! We had pretty bad thunderstorms and widespread flash flooding around here last night, which is uncommon for the Twin Cities. One suburb away from me had streets flooded with water up to the tops of tires on cars. Crazy!
  21. It sounds like everyone is busy and living life ATM. One day at a time, right? Thankfully mosquitoes only live for 2 days. Everyone jokes that they are our state bird (instead of the Loon, which it really is), because we get them so much in the summer. We've had a pretty balmy September so they are still hanging on. This is why window screens were invented! I'm continuing to job search every day, and at the same time pack to move. The rent is just way too expensive where I live and if I find a job I'm hoping to buy a home in the country. In the interim, I'll be moving up to our lake home on 1st Nov. It's a 3 hour drive so I'll have to work remotely the last 10 days of my current job (my end date isn't until the 11th). I'm worried and nervous, but trying to stay positive and know that things are under control. Meanwhile, work has been busy. It turns out transitioning the majority of your work to a cheaper, overseas company is not as easy as some might think!
  22. I finished Blood Hollow Wednesday night and loved it, as expected. I'm currently on page 484 of A Game of Thrones with 323 left to go. All I can say is, ugh
  23. Good luck to everyone going back to school and you too, Noll, if you decide to take that class. I think it sounds fun! I love using my sewing machine but I've not yet attempted any quilt-making. Are you guys out of the woods yet with 'Hermine,' Virginia? I hope she calms down as she makes her way up the coast. I've been busy, which is good because it keeps me from stressing and freaking out too much. My 2 week vacation at the cabin last month was wonderful and much needed. I haven't found a new job yet and I'm being laid off from my current job on 11th November so I'm starting to get scared . I've decided though that if I do finish and still haven't found a job I'll move up to our cabin and job-hunt remotely. I'll have my 17 week severance to live off of. The lease on our town home is up on Nov 1st and the rent is horrendous. I'm tired of renting anyway so hopefully I can finally get a house in the country, providing I find employment, that is. Tomorrow I'm going to a massive flea market and Monday I'm on vacation because of the Labor Day holiday. I hope you all have a lovely weekend
  24. Morning, everyone . I finished The Diviners by Libba Bray last week and have started Blood Hollow. It's the 4th book in William Kent Krueger's 'Cork O'Connor' series. I hope to find the next book in the series this weekend, since I know I'll want to continue on, and we'll see what else I can dig up.
  25. Because my job is being outsourced overseas come November and they don't have to pay my replacement as much, Noll . And it's crazy, I agree!
