  1. Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach was the most popular in the year of my birth. I've not read it, but I remember seeing it on the bookshelf at home growing up. Methinks I should add it to my list!
  2. Thanks, everyone! I'm very excited The house is a little over 100 years old, and luckily most of the beautiful old woodwork is still present. Here is the dining room, with lovely columns and a built-in hutch. This room is at the top of the stairs and while they have a bed here, this is the area I was imagining for my bookshelves and a comfy chair. Here is a view of the front porch and the awesome swing
  3. Hi, guys, and thanks for being so kind with your good wishes! It worked fabulously, because my offer was accepted on the house! I'm so excited :D I signed the first round of paperwork last night so next comes the inspection. If all goes well, I'll close on the house 30th of March and can move in on that day! Here's a photo, and I can post more later of the inside. The lot it sits on is quite large, so plenty of room for Emma the Beagle. Eventually I'll have to invest in a mower because that's a lot of grass to cut! All I can think of right now though is relaxing on that porch swing!
  4. Thanks, everyone! It's possible she may come down, Chaliepud, especially since it's been on the market since October and she hasn't budged since then. But, I decided yesterday to put an offer on one of the first houses I looked at and deep down really loved. It's a little further out and the town is smaller but I'm okay with it. Fingers crossed the owner gets back to my realtor today with good news! I'll post a photo if she does .
  5. I hate reading a series out of sequence, Muggle Not, so I will definitely not be doing that! I read on WKK's website that he's putting on the finishing touches to #16 in the Cork O'Connor series, Sulfur Springs, and also working on a companion novel to Ordinary Grace called The Tender Land. Both new books sound great! I hope to attend one of his many readings around the state this year, I think that would be really fun!
  6. I received my fine-point colored pens in the mail yesterday and will be getting the journal today! I bought a black one. I'm not one for bright colors but I know if I get a second journal I might venture out and get a pink one . I hope you enjoy Devil in the White City! I've been hearing good things about that book for years and have it on my wish list as well.
  7. Thanks, everyone! Sad news on the house front though, the seller refused to counter and simply would not budge on her price, so in the end I decided to bow out because I felt that the price was just too high for me. Several sources indicated to me that the house was not worth as much as she wanted, so what can you do? I will hopefully be going back this weekend to look about 6 other properties, and revisit one or two that I saw on my first trip. I read more of A Great and Terrible Beauty over the weekend and am about halfway now. It's pretty good, but I haven't made my mind up yet if it's better than that .
  8. There! My thread is officially open for business . This past weekend when I drove to the cities, I bought Mercy Falls by William Kent Krueger and A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libbra Bray, which I'm reading now. I read her book The Diviners last year and really enjoyed it, plus I needed something a little lighter after the two heavy-ending books I read earlier this month. I was in the cities this weekend and looked at about 7 houses. Of course I kept my eye out for any perfect spots for reading or my bookshelves! Now that I'm finally getting to buy a home of my own that'll be an important feature. Plus room for my other crafty-crafts and things. I put an offer on one last night and will hopefully hear on Monday whether the seller will accept my offer or counter it, but I'm hoping it's the former! Happy reading in 2017, everyone!!
  9. Books Read in 2017: Thrice the Brinded Cat Hath Mewed (second half) Alan Bradley A Man Called Ove Fredrik Backman
  10. My Favorite Book List (so far): The Shining Stephen King Count of Monte Cristo Alexandre Dumas Circle of Friends Maeve Binchy Instance of the Fingerpost Iain Pears Arcadia: A Novel Iain Pears Whom the Gods Love Kate Ross The Lady and the Unicorn Tracy Chevalier The Dante Club Matthew Pearl Ordinary People Judith Guest Close to Shore Michael Capuzzo The Goldfinch Donna Tartt A Tale of Two Cities Charles Dickens The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane Katherine Howe Night Shift Stephen King The Fountainhead Ayn Rand The Art Spirit Robert Henri I'm probably forgetting some, but I'll come back and add.
  11. Hello everyone! I'm finally getting around to starting a book blog/thread for the new year, so here we go! I've been busy, as usual, but tbh I've also been a bit apprehensive to start a thread because I know it will pale to everyone else's here! Hopefully I'll still have visitors Books Read in 2016 Blood Hollow William Kent Krueger The Diviners Libba Bray In the Unlikely Event Judy Blume Crimson Shore Doug Preston and Lincoln Child Arcadia: A Novel by Iain Pears The Asylum John Harwood Station Eleven Emily St. John Mandel A Place of Execution Val McDermid Edge of the Orchard Tracy Chevalier Lament Maggie Steifvater The Girl on the Train Paula Hawkins Armada Ernest Cline Personal Demon Kelley Armstrong Thrice the Brinded Cat Hath Mew'd (first half) Alan Bradley See? Isn't that sad? 13.5 books! In truth, I don't have a lot of shelf space and I'm the type that buys a book and reads it right then, instead of accumulating them and picking what to read, you know? At most I'll have one shelf dedicated to TBR books, but you never know, that may change in the near future. Also, for the past 3 months, I've been living out of boxes and my suitcase so I haven't done a whole lot of book shopping/accumulating. I love to read, and have loved it since making weekly library trips at a very young age. My trouble is I love LOTS of things, hence the 1-ish book a month reading habit I have. Maybe this thread can be mostly about books but also include a wee bit of my other minor obsessions, hmmm...
  12. Thanks to you, Frankie, I've been sucked into the world of bullet journaling I ordered a Leuchtturm 1917 from Amazon last night and some colored pens. Can't wait to start!
  13. I hope you have a great time reading in 2017, Muggle Not! I picked up William Kent Krueger's Mercy Falls the other day and thought of you .
  14. Mucho wishes to you for a fab and productive year of reading, Madeleine!
  15. Cheers to you for a great year of reading in 2017, Brian!
  16. Hope you're feeling better, Ben! I've never been to more than one movie in a day, Chesil, do you do that often? Sounds like you are having a relaxing couple of days off work and good luck getting your roof repaired! I put an offer on a house last night so I'm waiting on pins and needles to see if it's been accepted or if the sellers want to counter. Eek! I might not know until Monday, so I'll need to keep myself distracted this weekend.
  17. That's very sad about Miguel Ferrer, Pixie! He was so young I was saddened too about William Christopher, Chalie. Father Mulcahy was always one of my favorite characters on MASH.
  18. I haven't posted in this thread for awhile, so lots of updates! And I really need to start a 2017 reading thread... I finished Thrice the Brinded Cat Hath Mew'd and it was just okay, and I did not like the end . After that I read and finished A Man Called Ove, which was a Christmas gift I received from Weave and found it delightful! Most recently I started A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray.

I love watching football, but of course I'm cursed with having a sad and disappointing home team. The only hope I have for the Superbowl is that the Pack doesn't win!
  20. I will happily ship all my snow to you snow lovers but I'll need to send the -0 temps too otherwise no deal! Good news for me though, only 66 days left until the first day of Spring! Yahoo! I hope you are on the mend, Kell, and your fam too! I'm getting along well with my new job and am continuously doing the house-hunting thing. This weekend I'm looking at about 6 properties with my realtor so hopefully one of them will stick!
  21. Hello and welcome to BCF, dreadnaught! Glad to have you .
  22. Logan by far is at or near the top of my list of most-hated characters on television. He's exactly what you said, Frankie and BB - smug (and all the other things as well).
  23. I'm happy to hear paper book sales have gone up again this year. I have the Kindle app on my iPad and have read maybe 2 or 3 books that way, but I prefer paper. I by no means have the volume of paper books to fill dozens of book cases, but I love being surrounded by my books and enjoy looking at them and physically picking one up to flip through it. Not to mention always having a book I'm currently reading on my nightstand or where ever. I'm also constantly trying to cut down on my 'screen time.' In the past few years I've slowly phased out my digital music as well, and when I buy it now I always buy LPs or CDs. That's just me .
  24. Yes, it's pretty normal for this part of the country, Athena, at least for January. I'm also living further north in the state currently and it's always about 10-15 degrees colder up here than it is down in the major metropolitan areas. Looks like the sun will be out again but meant to be cloudy later on, which will luckily bring us up to 1f. Woo!
  25. I don't think that hate is a strong enough word for what I'm feeling about where I live right now. It's -24f, aka -31c . Time to power down, hibernate and dream about my retirement in a warmer part of the country.
