  1. It's many years ago, but whenever I see James van der Beek I think of Dawson's Creek, and I'm still bitter about that ending.
  2. Good luck with everything, Virginia! You sound like you are a tremendous help It's been very pleasant here lately, so hopefully the you-know-what is gone for good and never to fall from the sky at least until December! It's one of the best things in the world to finally open windows and have fresh air coming in the house. I can't believe how fast April has gone. It's already next month and we'll be heading up north to open up the lake cabin once again! I can't wait to be on the deck in the sun, looking at the lake with an adult beverage in my hand... Congrats to your GD, Muggle! Very impressive!
  3. I finished Hollow City over the weekend and am now reading The House of Velvet & Glass by Katherine Howe. So far so good!
  4. Chrissy, you are hilarious! I must admit that when I catch myself about to say "oh, yah?" I shudder and scold myself, ha! I DVR'd the show last night so I'll get caught up on it this weekend. Looking forward!
  5. I too, love lilacs. We had a massive amount in our yard at the house in which I grew up. They smell wonderful and I was always snipping some off for bouquets in the house. Such memories I was going to say, Muggle, your back yard looks like northern MN! I love being surrounded by trees like that. It's very chilly here today, ugh. There's rumor of rain and even some of the evil white stuff, too. I just keep praying for sun!!
  6. I'm curious about the new series as well, Raven, and plan on watching it. I loved the film and also the Coen bros, so we'll have to see how this one is. Do you know if the story relates to anything in the film? I mean, does it take place before or after the events in the movie? I still hope everyone realizes that most of those of us who live in MN/ND don't really sound like they do on the big screen
  7. A couple of my sisters went to college in Mo, dtrpath, so I spent some time there when I was young. Last summer we did really well with a couple of pots of dipladenias, so we decided to nothing but this summer. They are such a pretty red and love to climb so I'm trying to figure out if I'm handy enough to make a trellis (sp?) or two. Sounds like a lovely day out, Chrissy! How fun when you can give a gift to a fellow fan of Who I had really nice time at brunch today and am slowly winding down and getting ready for the new work week. I'll be dog/house-sitting until Wednesday and will be working from home on Thurs followed by a wee vacation on Friday. I'm sure the week will fly by!
  8. I'm not sure if I posted that I was reading Dr. Sleep, but I finished that and then read I am Half-Sick of Shadows by Alan Bradley. Currently I'm ready Hollow City by Ransom Riggs. I recently picked up copies of Inferno by Dan Brown and The Glass Blower of Murano (Marina Fiorato) and am very excited to read both!
  9. I'm in Minnesota, dtrpath, and yes, it's tough! I'm not even going to tell you how late we were getting snow last year, so hopefully it'll be drastically different this year and we can start to enjoy the outdoors consistently very soon here. Where did you used to live?
  10. Hey, guys! It sounds like April is in full swing and busy for you all. It continues to be so here and I'm so sorry I haven't posted in awhile Those of you talking about planting are making me jealous! Just a little over a week ago we had about 6 inches of snow here and now luckily it's mostly melted. Hopefully it won't return but you never know about spring in the upper Midwest! The ground is still too hard to plant though, but that won't stop us from buying pots of flowers anyway. My April started out with me getting a rental car while my car is in the shop waiting to be fixed. I was part of the horrible GM recall where 12 people have died so far so I told them I didn't feel safe driving until the new parts came in. I started dog/house-sitting today and will be here until Wednesday. I spent the day relaxing and letting the dogs get used to me and tomorrow I'm going for brunch with 2 of my friends. I hope you all are having a lovely weekend!
  11. I saw Gravity and Dallas Buyers Club. Both amazingly good films!
  12. Oh goodness it's been awhile since I've posted Lately I've read The Goldfinch and Dr. Sleep. Currently I'm ready I Am Half-Sick of Shadows by Alan Bradley and am enjoying it so much, as I always do with Alan Bradley's works. Half Price Books is having a sale this week so I hope to get over there later today and find some goodies.
  13. Yay!! I loved Miss Peregrine's too, Paula, and I can't wait to hear what you have to say about Hollow City. The photos were brilliant - getting to see the images of the characters you were reading about was the best
  14. Congrats again, Auntie Paula! Islay is beautiful. I don't envy you one bit on the snow business, Sofia. It's been extremely cold here so the foot of snow we have isn't going anywhere. My mom has been in Arizona all week so I'm watching the dog and getting in some much-needed relaxation. She's back on Tues so I took the next couple of days off so the dog wouldn't have to be alone all day while I'm at work. I have an appt in the morning at a fitness club so hopefully it'll go well and a membership won't break the bank! I'm just not getting anywhere on my own and I think I could really benefit from a personal trainer and taking some classes. My trip to Chicago is in the works for the second week in September and I can't wait! I've got my hotel booked and vacation reserved from work. Two of my friends and I will be driving so it'll be good to split up the costs. I'm so looking forward to the museums and just walking around there and exploring. I hope everyone is having a great weekend!
  15. I'm mostly anticipating the men's ice hockey. Team USA has 2 players from my state's team so I'm excited to see them hopefully come home with a medal! I'm also planning on watching some of the down hill skiing and for sure men's halfpipe snowboarding. Go USA!
  16. Hello, my friends! I've missed you I'm up to about page 100 of Dr. Sleep currently. For the past month or so I've been in a bit of a reading funk but yesterday I really started to get into this King and thank goodness because it felt so weird not reading anything! Marie H, I recently read the Goldfinch too and absolutely loved it. Donna Tartt is a master and for me, it didn't seem overly long at all. I would highly recommend it as well! Inver, I've been meaning to read more of Kidd's books. I loved The Secret Life of Bees when I read it years ago but I still have The Mermaid Chair and this Wings one to read. Has she written others?
  17. Thanks, Muggle, it's a giant weight off my shoulders, not having the debt anymore We are on the way up here as far as temps, FINALLY. Seriously, that -20 below zero stuff got old before it even happened. We're supposed to be in the 30's this weekend so watch out! I bet you anything I'll see people shopping in shirtsleeves The UK is the first big trip I'm planning, Chrissy! So I will keep you posted. I'm hoping to visit a lot of BCF folk plus work on my ancestry in Dorset and Somerset. I can't wait! As always, mucho good-job vibes from me to you, Paula
  18. I'm looking forward to The Hollow City also! I just finished Miss Peregrine last week and loved it. I'm also anxiously awaiting The Infinite Sea, the next book after The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey. Both Bellman and Black (Diane Setterfield) and The Goldfinch (Donna Tartt) came out in 2013 but I'm reading them this year and am extremely excited. I just started The Goldfinch last night .
  19. I used to love to crochet as a kid, Poppy! I'm resolved to pick it back up again this year. We'll see how much I remember! Even though we had a quiet holiday, I still seemed to be so busy. I'm thankful for the new year and new challenges. I'm also out-of-this-world thankful and glad to report I am officially 100% debt-free! Of course, with this being the first month of this momentous event my car needs some major repairs, but not too much for me to handle, thankfully. Now I'll be saving for a new laptop and trips! I hope to see my siblings in CA in April and beyond that the world! Anyway, working my behind off the last 4 1/2 years has been completely worth it. In other news, we've had below 0 temps and I'm extremely annoyed. It's not natural to be this cold I'm telling you!
  20. WTG Chesil on your lists and lots of luck and good vibes for a reading-ful 2014!
  21. I hate to say it, but hell has officially frozen over. Do you know how I know? I live in it, aka MN, where the temp is currently -5 below F (-20 below C) Muggle, watch out because I might be moving to NC sooner than I think! Good news is that we baked 2 giant pans of baklava today and the house smelled great. I'll post a photo in my thread . Tomorrow I'll be baking ginger snaps, all in preparation for Christmas packages to be sent to my siblings on the west coast plus a few close friends.
  22. It sounds exactly the same as ours, Muggle! We use the Jiffy mix as well but no, no sugar. Nothing too exciting for wine, just a couple bottles of Kim Crawford Sauvignon blanc. I also bought. some prosecco to have with OJ in the morning while we watch the parade
  23. Happy Turkey Day tomorrow to all my fellow American members! I can't wait to eat! I too have to pick up wine on the way home as well as a pie since I'm not really a baker. Muggle, we make a really good corn dish that has cornbread mix in it and is baked in the oven. Mucho amounts of butter and sour cream but luckily we only have it once a year I would also like to say congrats to Caramel and Popcorn, 2 turkeys that were sent to Washington DC for the President's pardoning ceremony. A third and not-so-lucky turkey was sent to the Governor's mansion where he will not be pardoned, if you know what I mean. All three are from a farm here in MN. Have a great holiday and a great rest of your week, everyone!
  24. Yes, it'll be a quiet traditional Thanksgiving at my house, with turkey, dressing and all the trimmings! Most of my family live 2,000 miles away so I won't see them in persion but we'll Skype. How about you and your family, Muggle? Traditional turkey dinner? I need to amend my statement before about interesting surrounding states. They are just less interesting A lot of the US's pioneers settled here (including my ancestors) so if not for them I may not be here! But I still hate snow. I can blame everything on the Vikings, Muggle! Everything would be better in my life with a winning football team Like I said though, I still love ice hockey!
  25. Chrissy, when I finally take a trip to Bruges I'll look to you for advice since you are obviously an expert! Have fun with your family in town, Muggle! The lights look amazing, and it must be nice to see them without turning to ice in the cold weather. I agree it would be great to have other countries so close by! Some states here are more interesting than others. My surrounding states are not, however That would be my one main reason for moving to the Northeast but alas, they get snow too. Boo! It's a short work week for me since my company is closed on Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving. I took Monday off as well so I'll have a nice long weekend. I hope everyone has a good week!
