  1. How about trying "Between Shades of Gray" by Ruta Sepetys. This is a story about the horrors of displacement and refugees. The story is based on true events and would perhaps balance up the bravery and glory of the fighter pilot elite set against what was happening on the ground during world war 2. It wasn't at all "Tally Ho"time for everyone. The book has fantastic reviews and is highly recommended.
  2. Why don't you try some serious reading like Daniel Steel or Catherine Cookson. I have very bad news for you Vampires are never allowed to leave Whitby.
  3. The Radleys is a story about a dysfunctional family who have a dark secret. They are vampires! 56 good reviews on Amazon 4 stars a bargain at £3.79
  4. Most wives have minds of there own !
  5. I confess that I read books because I enjoy reading but always select books that I enjoy. My list of 20 best is rather strange but would include Biggles, Swallows and Amazon, R M Ballatyne, Raphael Sabatini, Baroness Orxcy, Thomas Hardy, Clive Cussler, Ken Follatt. I think my most enjoyable read was a group one with 16 other people studying Othello and each of us taking and reading roles then discussing issues raised. This was absolutely great not one of the students getting less than level b at a level and still meeting to do readings.
  6. I think the Frank Yerby books were romantic novels based on the relationships of a handsome doctor who also had some challenging patients to look after. I can almost feel a Mills and Boon moment overpowering me. Pearl Buck did indeed write the "good Earth" sadly no longer available as are the fantastic books written by Dennis Wheatley such as the "haunting of Toby Jug" and the Duc de Richleau stories. After some research I have found that almost the whole of the novels by Neville Shute Norway are available On Amazon at modest charge.
  7. Clearly there has been considerable changes in transfer of ideas/thoughts going through cave drawings, monks, printing press, radio, television and computer. It is real science fiction to wonder where it will end. Many people will have preference for one platform or another but my view is that the ultimate will be thought transference such as that done by professor Dumbledore in the Harry Potter saga.
  8. Actually it was"Beyond the Black Stump" available at Amazon with 5 stars. It is 45 years since I last read it and am a bit mixed up will have todo some re-reads. Does anyone recall authors such as Pearl Buck or Frank Yearby hot favourites in the fifties.
  9. Well spotted the book was called On the Beach by Neville Norway Shute but it was still post apocalyptic and depressing. He also wrote a book called the Pied Piper about a world war 2 fighter pilot. If I recall that was much better. Don't know where I got "Beyond the Stump " from !sorry for being so misleading. 10. I remember reading a book called Beyond the Stump by Neville Shute where a nuclear attack had destroyed the world and a few survivors struggled on until the inevitable end. The Road is about a father and son who have survived a holocaust but try to live through the resulting devastation in America. I understand that both books are somewhat depressing and I offer wonder why these stories are written
  11. Opinions on books vary so very much it is inevitable that there will be a great diversity of comment made by any diverse group of critics such as the critics/reviewers on Amazon. My view is that it is wise for the potential book purchaser on amazon to read the reviews letting them be a guide but not committing to buy until having sample the product. This facility is readily available. .
  12. I have recently come across some books by Cormack McCarthy which look extremely interesting. I appreciate that American Literature might be lightweight but these books look really good. Anybody tried them the one I am looking at is " All The Pretty Horses" but he did write "No Country for Old Men"
  13. I read Tess at A level and I found it a very enjoyable and rewarding experience. The book is very very sensuous using imagery as a tool to overcome censure. Hardy himself was a tragic figure who seems to have fallen in love with his heroine, because of this the love is always powerful but doomed in all of his stories. This type of doomed love was fairly typical of the time as shown in Charlotte Bronte's Wuthering Heights another powerful novel read at A level which is well worth a look at.
  14. I have been informed that agreement is close at hand for the public libraries to download books on loan on the kindle. Anybody aware of this ?
  15. I noticed on some forum or other an author called Christopher Fowler and his Bryant and May London based detective fiction. I have downloaded "Full Dark House" and it looks good. Try some of your voucher on this.
