  2. The book might have been Masterpieces of Terror and the Supernatural. It has the two stories you mentioned in it - though it's possible they are also in other anthologies of course.
  3. Limericks may not be 'beautiful' but they can a joy to those of us who love the sound of words! My contribution: A man from Lower Largo bought toast with butter to go. He said, 'Blast and damn, I forgot the jam. Now my food tastes just so-so'.
  4. Two favourite poems: well, two that were published over 75 years ago. 'When I am dead, my dearest' by Christina Rossetti: When I am dead, my dearest, Sing no sad songs for me; Plant thou no roses at my head, Nor shady cypress tree: Be the green grass above me With showers and dewdrops wet; And if thou wilt, remember, And if thou wilt, forget. I shall not see the shadows, I shall not feel the rain; I shall not hear the nightingale Sing on, as if in pain: And dreaming through the twilight That doth not rise nor set, Haply I may remember, And haply may forget. and 'Love's Philosophy' by Shelley: The fountains mingle with the river And the rivers with the ocean, The winds of heaven mix for ever With a sweet emotion; Nothing in the world is single, All things by a law divine In one another's being mingle - Why not I with thine? See the mountains kiss high heaven And the waves clasp one another; No sister-flower would be forgiven If it disdain'd its brother: And the sunlight clasps the earth, And the moonbeams kiss the sea - What are all these kissings worth, If thou kiss not me?
  5. Could the book have been one of the Tales of the Bard trilogy by Michael Scott? They were published in the mid to late 1980s I think.
