  1. We don't allow promotional posts on the forum, I would suggest that you contact the original poster privately if you want them to provide you with a link.
  2. This does sound interesting! I’ve never heard of it before.
  3. If we had a like button I would be liking this repeatedly . A huge part of the importance of reading, beautifully summarised.
  4. I hope this one breaks the trend for you! I generally really like epistolary novels so I was intrigued by this review but I don't think I'll be rushing out to buy it now!
  5. Maybe disturbing was the wrong word, it has negative connotations that I didn't actually mean. The film looks really intriguing. Haunting was probably closer to what I meant. It is beautiful but it has a surreal quality and it feels quite emotionally complicated, if that makes sense.
  6. Madeleine's films are the only ones so far that I've actually seen but I'm discovering a lot of lovely new music from this thread! I know it's the point, so cleverly done, but this is really intense and kind of disturbing!
  7. Hey! What is this, the Daily Mail? 😂 I actually want to add a third option to mine, which I can’t believe I forgot to post. I love absolutely love ‘Concerning Hobbits’: https://youtu.be/SRgBI0WqWp4
  8. I started thinking about this (thanks to Raven and Classic fm) and now I can't stop. What do you think is the best film score/ soundtrack?? I'm going to start with a potentially controversial one but the first thing that came to my mind was the Jurassic Park theme. I just always loved it and it really sounds like discovery and adventure to me. I also always loved the theme from The Secret Garden, but I don't think it's technically as good: The Secret Garden Piano Theme Music - YouTube
  9. Magazines definitely do count! I accidentally skipped a bit already. I blame the fact that it's organised by presenter. I thought I had the beginning but he just said it's number 259 and I definitely haven't had it on for that long!
  10. Wow that is horrific! Scorcher seriously just ignored all of that!? That seems odd in itself. I usually like a bit of weird magical realism/ folklore/ gothic but this description totally puts me off!
  11. I did both . You read the forum though, which we all know is the main thing. I didn't know this was a thing but now I want to know what people voted for so I'm finding it on catch up.
  12. Wow that was good! I saw the book pop up on goodreads and I can imagine it wasn’t easy to read, although, as you say, fascinating. I haven’t read yet today but I’m hoping to finish What Abigail Did That Summer tonight. I think I only have about 40 pages left. That will be two books finished for the read-a-thon and I’m very happy with that .
  13. So... did you? Thank you! It was so delicious I had a second one . You read loads! I hope you enjoyed it
  14. I considered buying this when it first came out but had heard that it didn’t quite work in parts. Interesting that you think it’s worth reading despite that. Maybe this year I’ll give it a try
  15. Thank you Well it is very impressive! I stayed in my pyjamas until lunch time and finished Magyk today . Going to toast a hot cross bun and start What Abigail Did That Summer soon. It’s a good read-a-thon day!
  16. Very much so This got me thinking about which books came later and now I have the urge to re-read them again! I definitely have preferences that are based on when I read the books, not how technically good they are. The Wee Free Men will always be my favourite because it's the first Terry Pratchett book I read. I was about 12 or 13 and I wanted to be Tiffany Aching .
  17. Ok, definitely ignore both of my previous recommendations if you don't like the supernatural! I wonder whether Scott Westerfield's Uglies series would fit? It's been a long time since I read it but it's essentially set in a society where humans are engineered to fit their purpose. It follows a character who's started to question the system and isn't sure she wants to be changed.
  18. Would fantasy be okay? Maybe Rivers of London or the Dresden Files (both have mystery, action and a little bit of romance in there). I’d always recommend Rivers of London. That also has more of a secret society type theme, which I think might be more like Orphan X (although I haven’t actually read Orphan X so basing that purely on the blurb!)
  19. I agree with extending it to cover Monday . I want to finish Magyk and read What Abigail Did That Summer. I haven’t focused on reading at all for a couple of weeks, I’m looking forward to setting aside extra time for it!
  20. Oh yeah so it is in one with Rincewind! I thought I remembered granny weatherwax being in it and that confused me, I was obviously mixing them up. The ‘seventh’ thing is from folklore I think, because the number 7 is supposed to have spiritual significance. Everything magical is based on 8’s in Discworld though isn’t it? From the first book where octarine is the colour of magic (I love that part)
  21. Thank you! It’s not a spoiler, it’s the dad, Silas, who reminds me of Rincewind . I know Terry Pratchett also used the
  22. I wanted to update this more so I'm going to do it even though I don't have another review to post yet. I'm nearly half way through Magyk by Angie Sage and really enjoying it. It's very easy to read and one of the characters reminds me of Terry Pratchett's Rincewind. I would really love to just sit and finish the whole book but my routine has been so weird recently and there's been so many distractions, I'm just reading it in short bursts instead. Fingers crossed I get to finish it soon though, not only because I'm enjoying it but also because I have the new Ben Aaronovitch book to read afterwards!
  23. It's as warm and sunny as summer today (21 Celsius) but the weather forecast says next week it's probably going to snow...
  24. This post made me realise that I usually read books set in cold places, I'm finding it really hard to think of books set in warm climates! I'm sure other people will be able to think of some but in the mean time I'm going to direct you to Talisman's 'Around the World' book challenge thread because there are some fantastic sounding books on there from loads of warm countries (although I haven't read them, so can't personally recommend!): June's Around the World Book Challenge - Page 9 - Reading Challenges - Book Club Forum
