  1. I have absolutely no idea - I can’t think of anyone who looks like that! Is it fiction or non-fiction?
  2. That is so thoughtful! My grandad always used to being out an extra present on Christmas afternoon, when we thought all the presents had been opened 😄. I’ve just done my last bits of wrapping (just had enough wrapping paper!) so I am ready now!
  3. Oh dear, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that this one is better! What book is it?
  4. Did you see @Kudz’s clue for this one? It helped me to get it: ‘who was eve in relation to the Bible’? The heart it attached to something wedged under the door (it’s quite hard to see on a small screen!) I’ve actually forgotten what this one was 🙈 I can’t get the man in bright clothes looking a blue book!
  5. I’ve been tempted by this one before and I’m intrigued by your review! It might have to go on my 2023 list. I hope your husband is recovering well!
  6. I finished the final part of The Snow Queen last night, so my challenge is also complete! A Christmas Mystery: The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle A Christmas Children’s Story: The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson A Book with Snow on the Cover or in the Title: Midnight in Everwood by M. A. Kuzniar I’m actually really glad I re-read The Snow Queen in the end. I noticed some little details that I’d completely forgotten about .
  7. Congratulations 😄 I’m glad to hear you enjoyed all your challenge books too! I decided to go for The Snow Queen as my children’s book (although I might still read The Rose and the Ring if I have time). I felt like I desperately needed a screen break and I have a physical copy of The Snow Queen, so that swung it!
  8. This is a great idea for a thread. They seem to be in very intense discussion - I wonder what they were saying!? This is one of my favourites - George MacDonald (and his children), taken by Lewis Carroll:
  9. Which do you think is worse though - when the let-down is right at the end (after you were really looking forward to a good ending), or when it happens early on and for the rest of the book you keep thinking ‘but none of this would have happened if it wasn’t for that really stupid plot point’!?
  10. None of us are experts in book valuation, unfortunately! I’ve never seen a ‘modern library college’ edition that was particularly high value but I haven’t ever seen Intruder in the Dust!
  11. There are lots of things I love about it, especially getting to talk about books multiple times a day, but it has its downsides!
  12. Ah, thank you! I can actually read the first two 😄. I don’t at the moment but that is brilliant! I’ve also finished the the Blue Carbuncle now but I haven’t yet started my final Christmas challenge book!
  13. Yeah, I’m not sure if I have mentioned it on the forum before actually! Getting to this point is a bit of a long story but I’m currently freelancing as a private tutor and editor.
  14. Did anybody else see this short story in the Guardian? https://www.theguardian.com/books/2007/dec/24/extract.originalwriting It’s set in the world of his Nursery Crime series 😄
  15. In fairness to myself, I have read more than the books on that list. I don’t include books that I’ve read for work (because I don’t really read them in the same way and I like to make sure I’m allowing myself time to read for fun!) and I’ve been tutoring a lot this year. I’ve revisited a lot of classics, like The Handmaid’s Tale, The Great Gatsby, Of Mice and Men, A Christmas Carol, Macbeth and Frankenstein. I still enjoy going back to bits of all those texts (apart from the ending of Of Mice and Men…) but I do want to make sure I give myself more time to read the things I want to read just for me next year. This is my early new year resolution 😄.
  16. Hi, welcome to the forum! I love a good mystery do you have a favourite book?
  17. Good plan 😄. I really want to read Rebecca!
  18. Yeah, that’s probably having a big impact. I’ve generally had fast delivery from World of Books!
  19. I saw Jodi Taylor Tweet about Christmas Past being only 99p and was pretty tempted! I haven’t quite finished all of the main series yet though… The Masterpieces book sounds very useful for future Christmas Challenges 😁 I finished Midnight in Everwood last night! I’ll post a proper review soon but I enjoyed it overall. I’ve started listening to the audio book of The Blue Carbuncle but I am still slightly torn between The Rose and the Ring and a Snow Queen re-read next!
  20. That looks really good! and profits are for a very good cause
  21. That’s such a lovely idea. Also clever because it means you get nice coffee while you stay 😁. I have a few presents now and I’m looking forward to wrapping them! I also have the day off on Thursday so the house is going to become extremely festive 🎄
  22. This has just reminded me that I need wrapping paper!! 😬 that wouldn’t be a great thing to forget 🙈 That is really annoying! I don’t want to jinx it but, luckily, I’ve never had that happen!
  23. Marietta Stelle’s mother always said that nothing good came of a rainy day. Midnight in Everwood by M.A. Kuzniar
  24. Definitely not just you @willoyd! I recognise a couple more books from the list this year than last - all of them from the fantasy or science fiction lists - but I haven’t read any of them and only have one on my wish list (Fairy Tale by Stephen King). It is all money but no heart. We need Amazon’s budget over here 🥲
  25. Oh me too actually! She is a very close second to Tiffany for me.
