  1. I’m the opposite - I love a good mystery/ detective novel and would like to try more science fiction! I especially want to read more Ray Bradbury after loving Fahrenheit 451. A few of us have been enjoying the Frey & McGray series by Oscar de Muriel. They’re set in the nineteenth century and they have great mysteries with a slightly supernatural twist .
  2. I immediately added this to my wish list 😄

    Old English

That’s interesting, I wonder how that came about!? I find the similarities between different languages interesting. Wow, that’s impressive!
  4. Stardust is one of my favourites too. It’s the book that made me love Neil Gaiman. I’d still find it hard to choose between that and Neverwhere though
  5. I do sometimes, but it's always because there are too many books I want to read - never because I can't think of one that I might want to read . I feel like it might be more useful for someone who wants to get into reading but isn't really sure what they like yet?
  6. I loved that book so much! The only thing I would have changed: [spoiler for the ending] Although, if you have the 50th anniversary edition
  7. 13!?!? I'm not surprised you needed a little break in February I'm currently reading The Hidden People by Alison Littlewood. It has been on my shelf for years - I bought it as part of the 3 book deal they always have in The Works. I felt like something with a little bit of folklore after reading one of @Books do furnish a room's reviews and decided it was finally time to try it!
  8. You can use the eye icon to put things in spoiler quotes if you want to. That way others can join in with the conversation without worrying out seeing spoilers if they haven't read the book yet . I can think of a few that are about the development of an individual over time, but I can't think of any that follow a whole family!
  9. I don't actually have any but I do really like the covers. I couldn't comment on the paper quality but, unless it was really bad in a way that made them tear easily or something, I don't think I'd mind! Les Miserables and Villette are two of the prettiest ones I've seen - I'd definitely like to own those. Their edition of Dracula is nice too!
  10. Hi Ben, welcome to the forum! I’m a big fan of both Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Do you have a favourite Gaiman book?
  11. Have you seen the film Runaway Bride? When I first saw your post I thought the film might be based on a book, but the plot is obviously quite different!
  12. I’m very tempted to try this book now, purely based on this quote 😄
  13. That was a very good deal, Neverwhere is one of my favourite books. Hope you like it @Marie H!
  14. I came across this website, which is designed to help you to find a new book, and thought it was an interesting concept! It presents you with the first page of a random book and, if you like it, you can reveal the details of the book at the bottom of the page. https://recommendmeabook.com Has anybody used it before? I’ve flicked through a few pages and, honestly, haven’t found anything I’d want to read yet. I do wonder how many books are actually in the system and how they were selected…
  15. After much deliberation, I decided I wanted to start my stream of consciousness choice while eating my lunch today, so I made the quick decision to go for Katherine Mansfield’s The Garden Party. I realised about 1/4 of the way through that I have actually read it before - just a long time ago! And I really enjoyed it! Some examples of stream of consciousness can be quite hard to follow, especially when they’re displaying distress or fragmented memory, but this is very easy to follow and has a clear short story. It also has quite a poignant message about life, death and class division. I think this would be a good one to read for people who don’t normally like the stream of consciousness style. Probably my favourite bit: ‘But the air! If you stopped to notice, was the air always like this? Little faint winds were playing chase, in at the tops of the windows, out at the doors. And there were two tiny spots of sun, one on the inkpot, one on a silver photograph frame, playing too. Darling little spots. Especially the one on the inkpot lid. It was quite warm. A warm little silver star. She could have kissed it.‘
  16. Thanks @Chrissy! Also just spotted (while grabbing the above series 😄), the Caraval Trilogy by Stephanie Garber is currently 99p.
  17. Since you liked the character Death, definitely Mort and Reaper Man 😄.
  18. Thanks for checking Gordon. If you have any questions after looking at the promotional policy above, just let me know.
  19. The giveaways are always open to everyone - we’ve always had members from around the world and I take that into consideration before I choose the giveaway . Can I count you in?
  20. I can’t resist the folklore element! And I’m very tempted by this too!
  21. Thank you all for being part of the Book Club Forum - from the oldest to the newest members. This place literally wouldn’t exist without all of your support and you are appreciated ❤️. In honour of that, we have one special copy of The Owl and the Nightingale SIGNED by the poet laureate himself, Simon Armitage! If you would like to be entered into the giveaway draw, please leave a comment on this thread, or send a personal message to me if you’d prefer to enter anonymously. A winner will be selected at random on February 19th.
