  1. I've just finished The Red Queen and found it to be my favourite book by Philippa Gregory (not that I'm her biggest fan). It is about Margaret Beaufort, the mother of Henry VII. I recommend watching "The trial of Richard III" after you have read the book. It is a 4 hour "trial" of Richard III on the charge of murdering the princes in the Tower (broadcast by Channel 4 in 1984). Quite interesting. It features David Starkey as a prosecution witness.
  2. I read Gone with the Wind when I was 14. It took me AGES but I enjoyed it a lot.
  3. Same here. I wondered what the fuss was all about but I think it gets better towards the end so keep hanging in there
  4. Yes, I too think that Margaret George's biography of Henry VIII is a great read. It's ages since I read it but it is still one of my favourites.
  5. Thanks for pointing out Carole Matthews - I just read my first book by her (It's now or never) and really enjoyed it. OK, it is very predictable but who cares? I'm going to read more of her books in the future Greta
  6. 1. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen 2. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen 3. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  7. Agatha Christie started me off, I was like on drugs, I only read crime for weeks and weeks. Then it suddenly stopped and I went back to fiction. Then I discovered Elizabeth George and read most of her novels until I discovered Henning Mankell. After having read most of his books I had enough and only read fiction for years. I've only come back to crime novels because of Stieg Larssen.
  8. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a fantastic read but I think the second book in the trilogy, The Girl who Played with Fire is the best in the series. It's one of those books that you finish in a day.
  9. I read Year of Wonders a couple of months ago and I enjoyed it. I just thought the ending was a bit weird as if it was not written by the same person or am I imagining things?
  10. I've just finished Alias Grace and loved it. A bit slow at the start but when she starts to describe Grace's life it really picked up and I couldn't put it down.
  11. I really like Marian Keyes (apart from her last book). I also like to read Katie Fforde and Monica McInerney. It is sooo good to read something light-hearted after a challenging novel or biography. Couldn't live without chicklit.
