  1. Hi all - I for one have never read any of Tolkien's books. Some of my family have and I am in possession of very old copies of the books so one day -- one day soon -- I will read them, hopefully back-to-back.... Do you think they will be too overwhelming if I read them back-to-back? Julie

  7. For me it was The Exorcist... While I was in school. My English teacher actually confiscated it as he thought it was unsuitable for a 14 year old. This is debatable. A truly great book!
  8. I read 1408 was originally an exercise Stephen King used to exemplify how a story changes between drafts.... Keep me posted...

  10. My friend has read majority of Jodi Picoult's books and she loves them! I want to read My Sisters Keeper. But obviously meant to be a bit sad!!

  13. Hello - I am wondering if anyone can recommend any new children's books that aren't necessarily stories, but are educational and enlightening and suitable for up to 12 yr olds. I thought that since there are so many great people using the forum that it would be interesting to see what people can think of that I am unable to find!? I look forward to hearing from you!

  16. Stephen King is amazing. I never manged to finish The Stand though... One day I will. What did everyone think of the film version of The Myst? In haven't been here for a while, has anyone read anything particularly scary recently!?
  17. Thanks KidsMum, I read though some great kids books last month, which were perfect for the kids, but i was looking to get a few more, my kids are getting better and better at reading and they get through books pretty quickly!
  18. Thanks for the reply Christie, I have four kids under the age of 10, 2 boys and 2 girls, I was looking for something that is quite visual and something I can easily read to them before bed.

Thanks alot Vodka Fan! seems like people are suggesting alot of nuclear holocaust/war books, I personally really like those types of books but it may be a bit heavy for the kids, but i'm having a look at them now Pickle and Cookie, thanks for the suggestions! I've actually read 'tommorow when the world began' and all the other books in the series, fantastic books, i may wait a year or two before i introduce them to those books, but a great choice! i almost forgot about how great they were. I actually read a book when i was younger called 'I am David' a teacher gave it to me when i was younger and didnt like reading, changed my life. Have you guys had the same experiance with any books

I agree, I think its important to try and substitute books to television as much as you can, i send my oldest on the train to school with a little book to keep him reading then ask him about it at the end of the day, I don't let him watch television until he does, I rarely have to though, he loves his reading.
