  1. Do you prefer reading a book online or in hand (print)? Does it affect your reading experience choosing one over the other? What are the pros and cons of both in your opinion?
  2. Good question. Probably not. I tend to like characters who are relatable but usually unlike me, or characters who have qualities I think I lack, so probably not.
  3. Has anyone ever read The Island of Eternal Love by Daina Chaviano?
  4. Interesting question. All fictional characters. 1) Capt. Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean) - purely entertaining 2) The unnerved narrator in Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven 3) Biblo Baggins (The Hobbit) 4) Mary Poppins I think they'll have some weird conversations. Yeah, should be interesting if not fun.
  5. Has anyone seen the opening ceremony?
  6. Hi, it's great that you're on the forum. I'm not in England, but the US. I look forward to reading your book. Thank you for responding.
  7. I've just recently joined a book club which is reading this book. Has anyone read it? What did you think?
  8. One of the problems I notice with some writers is that the descriptions are overdone. Sometimes, writers will describe a scene or setting in vivid detail but although very specific, the overemphasis on the minute details affects the smooth flow of reading. The focus on every piece of information takes away from the story being told. It's good to have great descriptions but too much can be difficult to wade through. The worst of it is reading a novel which is entirely description and very little narrative. But to each his own.
  9. When reading contemporary or modern literature, what common writing or style problems do you notice? Is this a general pattern in modern lit or in particular genres, or only in particular books? Does it significantly affect your enjoyment of what you read or do you dismiss it?
  10. What book series would you like to see developed into a TV series or film which haven't been attempted yet?
  11. I like his writing style. I love the inner dialogue approach to writing, and the detailed descriptions of everything. It adds something to the experience of reading. It's not too direct and encourages readers to "linger" longer on a word or seemingly insignificant detail he describes or points out.
  12. Yes, in the US, we're on the 11th or 12th episode i believe. But it picks up after the 4th episode and more of the side characters are better developed after the 5th. Very interesting relevations to come. Keep watching!
  13. I didn't mind the series, but it could have been better developed. I really liked Mina's character, not your typical vampire. But, it's unfortunate that it couldn't be more developed.
  14. Yeah, Anne's childlike wonder and "imagination" is inspiring. A different way of seeing. Yep, that sounds so good about now. A nice cup of hot chocolate or vanilla latte while curled up with a good book. Nice. Agree. This is why the book has lasted because it gives readers the chance to grow up with Anne. Yeah, she overreacted quite a bit. But i guess that made her more interested. If she was too subdued, then her character wouldn't be as provocative or appealing. It was an endearing eccentricity.
  15. I like audio books but as you've said, it depends on the reading. I prefer dramatic readings of the text. When it's flat, it's hard to stay interested. It's nice when the reader puts life into the delivery, or when there's more than one voice providing dramatic readings, and not just one seemingly uninterested reader.
  16. I like the TV series and where it's headed. If writers continue to work on it and improve, it could really stand out on it's own. Not sure about comparisons to True Blood. I see them as completely different shows, not meant to be compared. True Blood is interesting but that's about it imo. I'd rather watch a series like Vampire Diaries and see it strive to reach it's full potential.
  17. I started to read A Walk to Remember, but since i saw the film and liked it quite a bit, i didn't connect with the book as much.
  18. I read the Nicholas Sparks book The Wedding. Great book, finished fairly quickly and enjoyed the story. Well written.
  19. The same except that i don't mind the noise of the tv for example when i'm reading online.
  20. I'm curious to find out about everyone's reading habits. 1) When you begin a book, or are in the process, or finishing a book, how do you read? Do you read in fits and starts, once in a while when you are in the mood, a few pages everyday, once a week, or all at once? 2) And secondly, how do you read the book? Do you read a few paragraphs or few pages and reflect, look up a few words, do a little literary research or bio on the author, or research a subject related to the sections you are reading, do you read the entire book before you think or reflect, or do you simply read to enjoy the share pleasure of it and not think too much about reflecting?
  21. I recently started reading the book, and it's a great read. So, I hope they don't screw it up.
  22. Great question. I think the reason changes depending on where you are in life. When i was young, reading was more about novelty, fantastic experiences, and taking an adventure with one's imagination but with a wide-eyed bushy tailed sort of zeal. As a student, reading was a necessity, to know and understand the various literatures which reflect and shape our culture and the world. At this point, reading is relaxing. I read because i want to escape and because i like to see the creative worlds writers can pull me in. I can get lost in these worlds and feel fulfilled. And i learn something along the way, but the learning is not the goal, but the indirect result of a good story told. And to echo BookJumper's thoughts, reading is inspiring, spurring creative juices in a unknown direction. That's the ticket.
